Lemieux hospitalized with irregular heartbeat

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins owner-player Mario Lemieux was hospitalized Wednesday for observation of an irregular heartbeat, general manager Craig Patrick said.

Lemieux will be monitored overnight in the undisclosed hospital and won't play Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild. The team said his playing status will be day to day after that.

According to Patrick, Lemieux reported having an irregular heartbeat after practice.

"We thought the best precaution was to have him enter the hospital for observation," Patrick said.

The 40-year-old Lemieux recently missed two games because of what the team described as the stomach flu, but it was not immediately known if an illness that he said lingered for days was related to his latest problem.

The Hall of Fame center has had numerous medical problems during a career that began in 1984, including a bout with Hodgkin's disease in 1993 that was partly responsible for him sitting out the 1994-95 season for medical reasons.

Lemieux also has been sidelined for long periods with back and hip problems, and he missed more than half of the Penguins' 1990-91 Stanley Cup championship season with severe lower back pain. After retiring for 3 1/2 years, he returned in December 2000 and has played since, but missed large portions of the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons with hip injuries.

Lemieux had seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 235 games this season, and recently had a four-game streak without a point that was the longest of his career.

I hope he is alright. Get well soon super Mario.

Flyers defenseman Desjardins to miss eight to 10 weeks with shoulder injury

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Eric Desjardins is expected to miss eight-to-10 weeks because of a dislocated right shoulder that will require surgery to fix.

Desjardins, 36, was injured Tuesday night in a collision with Calgary's Darren McCarty during the first period of the Flyers' 1-0 win in a shootout. He will be operated on next Tuesday by team orthopedist Peter DeLuca.

Desjardins, chosen seven times as the Flyers' most outstanding defenseman, had surgery on the same shoulder four years ago. He also missed eight games this season due to a concussion.

In seven games since returning, Desjardins had one goal and no assists.

It is the latest blow to Philadelphia's defense corps. Joni Pitkanen underwent surgery on Wednesday to have a torn abdominal muscle repaired. The 22-year-old Pitkanen is expected to be out for a month.

Pitkanen had emerged this season - his second in the NHL - as an offense force. In 25 games, he had eight goals and 15 assists and was a plus-18. Desjardins had two goals and 12 assists in 18 contests.

"When you're dealing with two 20-plus minute players, we have to take a hard look at what we're doing there," coach Ken Hitchcock said Wednesday.

The Flyers have nine players sidelined by injuries, including captain Keith Primeau who has missed 17 games with a concussion and is out indefinitely. Philadelphia hopes to get defenseman Dennis Seidenberg (broken wrist) back for Thursday's game against Edmonton.

Hitchcock said he plans to divide his six healthy defensemen into two groups on special teams. Derian Hatcher, Mike Rathje and Chris Therien will concentrate on penalty killing and Kim Johnsson, Freddy Meyer and Seidenberg will work on the power play.

Two months. Damn.

With regards to Mario, an irregular heartbeat is no big deal. I have suffered this for sure. You get dizzy every now and then and you feel weak but once you see a doctor about it they can fix it up for you by either giving it a shock or just giving you exercises to regulate it. The one I had was one of the more serious ones so don't fret for Mario. It can turn serious though and where he's such an active athlete things could be different but I think he'll be ok. This could be overblown because of the whole Fischer thing.

Marty Havlat could be out for the year aswell... what a shame.

Canadiens centre Radek Bonk out indefinitely with torn groin muscle

MONTREAL (CP) - Centre Radek Bonk will be out of action indefinitely with a torn groin muscle, the Montreal Canadiens announced Wednesday.
Bonk needs complete rest for a week before he resumes skating, said coach Claude Julien. "On the other hand, they're not talking about surgery," he added.
Bonk missed the Canadiens last game Saturday night against Los Angeles. He has missed eight games this season with three different injuries.
It has been a difficult first season in Montreal for Bonk, who was acquired in June, 2004 from the Kings with goaltender Cristobal Huet for goalie Mathieu Garon.
Bonk, who is earning $2.394 million US this season, has yet to score for the Canadiens.
Captain Saku Koivu, who missed the club's last two games with a sore groin, was to have resumed practising with the team on Wednesday but opted instead for a 30-minute skate with injured winger Alexei Kovalev before practice.
Koivu hopes to ready for the team's next game Saturday night against Anaheim. He said he doesn't want to rush back and risk aggravating the injury.
Kovalev skated for the first time since he underwent knee surgery last month. He has missed nine games.

On the bright side, Bonk is off the ice.:wicked: :D
Good to see Kovalev on skates again. Captain Koivy due back soon.:thumb:

Lemieux discharged from hospital

Mario Lemieux was discharged from the hospital today and is taking medication for an irregular heartbeat, it was announced by General Manager Craig Patrick. He will miss tonight's game against the Minnesota Wild at Mellon Arena and is listed as day-to-day.

"Mario has been diagnosed with a relatively common condition that can be treated with medication," Patrick said. "We expect that he will be able to begin exercising in a matter of days and return to the lineup in a brief period of time."

Lemieux's condition is known as atrial fibrillation. He entered the hospital after practice Wednesday and was held overnight for observation.

"He has had several episodes of this condition since mid-summer, and the good news is that now we know what it is, and how it can be treated," Patrick said.

Lemieux, 40, also missed two games in recent weeks with a stomach virus.

Quite honestly it's disturbing to think what the Flyers could do if they were completely healthy. I mean no Primeau, Forsberg, Pitkanen, Desjardins, Esche, Stevenson, and yet they're only 4 points back of the Rangers in the division.

That's the sign of a deep team, for sure.

As for Esche though... I think that's one case where the Flyers are better off. He's been having a pretty sub-par season to date.

That other kid's all right.

Good thing Stuart is skating in black and gold colours now, because Boynton won't be for 4-6 weeks.

Boynton hurt his left knee Sunday in Vancouver and originally thought he'd be fine. But tests have revealed a fractured kneecap.

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that, after consultation with club physician Dr. Don Chow and specialist Dr. Anthony Miniaci from the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, Martin Havlat has decided to have surgery on his right shoulder.

Havlat dislocated his right shoulder early in the third period of Ottawa’s 4-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Corel Centre on Nov. 29.

Havlat will travel to Cleveland to undergo the procedure by Dr. Anthony Miniaci. It is expected the 24-year old will be out of the Senators lineup for up to three to four months.

Dr. Miniaci, a graduate of the University of Western Ontario’s medical school, is the staff executive director of sports health at the Cleveland Clinic.

Havlats going to be out for pretty much the whole season. Might cause some problems with the Sens second line.

Hard to replace a guy like that.
Although, the sens are 6 and 3 in the 9 games that he has missed.
Guys like Smolinski, Varada have picked up their games a little.

Calgary Flames defenceman Roman Hamrlik has a sprained MCL in his left knee and expects to be out of action for a couple of weeks.

Hamrlik hurt his knee in the first period of Calgary's 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday and did not return.

Kings' Bure undergoes back surgery

Release

12/9/2005 2:39:57 PM

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Kings right wing Valeri Bure underwent successful surgery this morning to alleviate lower back pain.

Bure, 31, is expected to miss at least eight weeks. He is scheduled to begin his rehabilitation in approximately 10 days. The surgical procedure was performed by back surgeon Robert Watkins.

Bure has not played a regular season game for the Kings this season after signing with the club as a free agent on August 12. In 621 career NHL regular season games with Dallas, Florida, St. Louis, Calgary and Montreal, the 5-11, 180-pound native of Moscow, Russia, has 400 points (174-226=400) and 221 penalty minutes.Link (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=146344&hubname=)

It was determined that Bure's back problems were caused by Bure patting himself on the back too much even though he isn't that good a player. :D

My god... ESPN is reporting it too.

This is ridiculous. I have to have sympathy for the Flyers even though they're a division rival.

I can't remember this many key guys getting hurt at the same time on one team.

Like I said in another thread... it doesn't look like anyone's injuries are long term... so hopefully they'll have everyone healthy in the 2nd half.

Andy Murray coached a team that was over half AHL players at certain points in the season.

Roenick breaks finger
Jeremy Roenick
Jeremy Roenick's disappointing season has taken another bad turn. Roenick told TSN on Tuesday that he broke a finger while blocking a shot last night against Vancouver and he expects to miss four to six weeks of action. Roenick has only five goals and 11 points in 31 games with the Kings this season. Despite his offensive struggles, the Kings are tied for first in the Pacific Division.

Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals - Ovechkin left practice early yesterday after experiencing soreness in his right leg, reports the Washington Post. Before anyone gets worried, the rookie winger says that he only tweaked the muscle after getting bodychecked by Zdeno Chara and that he does not expect to miss any time due to the discomfort.

Hannu Toivonen, Boston Bruins - Toivonen left last night's game against the Senators after injuring his ankle, reports the Boston Herald. There is no timetable for his return as the Bruins are simply classifying the injury as a sprained right ankle. Depending on what further tests reveal, he could be out for just a few days to several weeks. Unfortunately for Toivonen this couldn't have happened at a worse time as the absence will allow Andrew Raycroft to work his way out of his funk and perhaps steal the #1 job back.
Toivonen was playing great.

McCabe injury more serious?
January 17 @ 8:20 AM
The groin injury which has kept defenceman Bryan McCabe out of the lineup may be more serious than first anticipated, The Toronto Star is reporting.
McCabe has missed the Leafs previous two games with a groin strain, which now has escalated to a possible groin tear, meaning Saturday's game in Ottawa is a long-shot.
The Leafs are also without Darcy Tucker (ribs) and Eric Lindros (wrist), who is still contemplating surgery.
"I don't think anyone knows (if surgery remains a possibility)," head coach Pat Quinn said.

That's too bad.
Sometime a groin injury can really nag you.
And just when you think it's better, you can tweak it by slipping on some ice, or going up stairs, or even sleeping.

A speedy recovery to Mr. McCabe.

That being said, see you guys on Saturday night.
I'm hoping for a better result than last game.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Islanders centre Kevin Colley broke his neck after a headfirst crash into the boards and will undergo surgery Thursday.

The Islanders would not say Wednesday whether the injury will end his season or threaten his career. For now, the 27-year-old player is out indefinitely.

Colley broke the fifth cervical vertebrae in his neck but there is no paralysis. The surgery will repair and stabilize his spine.

He was transferred Wednesday from North Shore University Hospital on Long Island to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Dr. Andrew Hecht, the hospital's chief of spinal surgery, will operate.

Colley was injured during a 5-3 victory over Washington on Tuesday night, slamming his head while entangled with Capitals defenceman Jamie Heward.

Colley had gone to check Heward, who slid his stick between Colley's legs with 1:14 left in the first period. Colley didn't connect with Heward and couldn't slow or brace himself before crashing into the boards with his head down.

He remained on the ice for several minutes and was tended to by trainer Rich Campbell and Dr. Elliot Pellman, the head team physician. Colley skated off with assistance from teammates and was taken to North Shore. He had feeling in all his extremities.

Colley has no points and 52 penalty minutes in 16 NHL games, all this season with the Islanders.

Get well soon Kevin.

Yeah, if there was a neck injury there was certainly a danger of a spinal injury. A back board should be used in that situation.

Canadiens goalie Theodore out six to eight weeks with fractured heel bone

MONTREAL (CP) - Canadiens goaltender Jose Theodore will miss six to eight weeks after fracturing a right heel bone while walking down the frozen steps of his Montreal home, the club announced Saturday.

Continuing a nightmare season for the team's No.1 netminder, Theodore suffered the injury Thursday night, when freezing rain that fell on the city made for treacherous walking conditions.

"It was bad luck and even though I am very disappointed of the outcome, I can only wish that my rehab period will be as quick and short as possible," Theodore said in a statement.

"I intend to come back strong and contribute to the teams success through the last part of the regular season and in the playoffs," the 30 year-old netminder added.

Canadiens GM Bob Gainey sympathized with his goaltender.

"Jose was a victim of an unfortunate accident and we all feel for him," said Gainey.

"He will get on with his rehabilitation as soon as the condition of his heel allows him to do so. We hope to have him back in time to help the team down the final stretch."

Theodore, the league's Hart Trophy winner in 2001-2002, has had a difficult season. Backup Cristobal Huet has started Montreal's last six contests.

Burke out indefinitely with broken finger after practice mishap

TAMPA, Fla. (CP) - Veteran goalie Sean Burke of the Tampa Bay Lightning is out indefinitely after sustaining a broken finger in practice Thursday.

The Lightning recalled Gerald Coleman from Springfield of the AHL to backup starter John Grahame. Burke's right index finger was placed in a splint Thursday. He will be re-evaluated by the Lightning medical staff next week.

Burke is 11-9-3 this season with a 2.92 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage.

Coleman, 20, went 13-17-3 with the Falcons this season with a 3.54 GAA and .890 save percentage.

The 6-4, 205-pound goaltender spent the past three seasons with the OHL's London Knights, helping them to capture the 2005 OHL championship and the 2005 Memorial Cup.
