Yzerman turns down Turin

The Red Wings captain realizes his play this season doesn't warrant a spot on the Team Canada roster.

Steve Yzerman has pulled himself off Canada's Olympic roster. Steve Yzerman has confirmed to Sportsnet he will not participate in this coming Olympics in Italy.

Yzerman told Sportsnet "I talked to Wayne the other night and told him I didn't feel I was playing well enough to hold one of 13 spots." He added "I'm very grateful for past opportunities representing my country but there is too many good players playing too well for me to hold a spot on the roster."

Yzerman has been struggling this season with only eight points in 18 games played this season.Link (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article.jsp?content=20051206_075853_2864)

I'm glad that Yzerman realizes that he would be detrimental to the team's success. Hopefully a few more poor performers make the same decision.

Stevie Y, as always, is a selfless class-act, all the way.

I am dissapointed to here this a bit but not surprised at all. Hopefully Lemieux does go so there is a veteran leader.

Sakic, Iginla, Blake, Pronger, Shanahan, and even guys like Richards etc can provide plenty of leadership/championship experience.

Yzerman is one of the classiest guys in the world, and deserves every ounce of respect he's given.

I still think Lemieux should go, but only for his ability on the PP and the shootout. His leadership, while awesome, isn't necessary given the other names htat'll be on this team.

Thats good for Yzerman to step aside

There are younger guys who can take his place

Lemieux says he will have his decision after two or three more games. He wants to see how he is after his stomach virus, or something. IMHO he should stay home too. There are more than enough captains and former captains to provide leadership.

Classy move by Yzerman? He knew others deserved a spot and took the high road to end his career rather then taking a chance at being a flop for team Canada. I don?t think it?s a selfless move. It?s probably better described as just the right move for Steve Y.

As much as I?d like to see Lemieux on the ice too, I think he?s in the same position and should bow down. His game has just not come back since last time he played.
