NEW YORK (CP) - Tom Brady, the New England Patriots quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion, is this year's Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.

The award is presented to someone who symbolizes the ideals of sportsmanship through character and performance.

''Tom Brady is the consummate winner,'' managing editor Terry McDonell said Monday in a release. ''Against the steepest odds and on the grandest stage, he refuses to believe his team can be beaten. That character extends to his teammates and his fans.''

SI's Sportsman of the Year issue hits newsstands Wednesday.

Brady will receive the award, a replica of an ancient Grecian amphora, at a party in New York on Tuesday.

Brady has led the Patriots to three Super Bowl victories in four seasons while earning Super Bowl MVP honours in 2002 and 2004. He's only the fourth quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to three or more Super Bowl wins and is just the fourth player in Super Bowl history to win multiple MVP awards.

Pro football is being honoured for the sixth time in the 51-year history of the award. Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula was the last pro football honouree in 1993, and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana was the last NFL player named in 1990.Link (http://www.tsn.ca/nfl/news_story.asp?id=145824)

Isn't it a little early to choose a winner? Shouldn't it be announced once the year is over?

Steepest odds? The Patriots were a dominant team for years and no one could beat them, how is that steepest odds?

I think this was a bad choice by SI.

I don't agree with the choice either. I don't know who else I would give it to, but it seems like Tom Brady just gets too much love for being on the best tema in football for the past 4 years.
