View Full Version : Wellwood Turning Heads

It wasn't a full-fledged ringing endorsement from his coach, but Kyle Wellwood appears to be on the way to some substantial playing time in the next little while.

The rookie forward skated on the first line with Mats Sundin and fellow rookie Alex Steen in last night's 4-3 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens. While the line didn't hit the scoresheet together, they showed coach Pat Quinn enough that they'll remain together for at least the next little while.

On its own that should immediately boost the 11 minutes of ice time a game the dynamic rookie had been averaging coming into last night's game.

"It worked pretty well," Quinn said of the newly formed line. "Young Wellwood is a smart little player. He dazzled a couple of times but he dazzled us a couple of times too."

Count Sundin among those dazzled by Wellwood.

"Kyle is one of those guys who I keep watching and I'm amazed at his hockey sense and the way he can create out there out of almost nothing," Sundin said. "Tonight again he almost scored two highlight goals all by himself (Jose Theodore stoned him twice). I love to play with him. Keep him on my line all year. I like it."

Quinn wasn't ready to make any promises though.

As much as he enjoyed the two playing together alongside Steen he sees a lot of similarities between Wellwood and Sundin that might not make it a perfect fit.

"Throughout his career, that has been his strength --holding on to the puck and taking ice that is there," Quinn said of Wellwood. "People who he has had success with are guys who play off his puck-carrying ability. Mats is kind of the same so it may not end up to be a good line but I think he is a bright young fellow who I think will push to expand his game."

Quinn is counting on both Wellwood and Sundin to make the adjustment so their similarities don't become a detriment to keeping them on the same line.

"They're both good players and good players make adjustments and find out how to take advantage of the skills their linemates have so we will try it for a little bit," Quinn said.

Who would have thought that we'd see Wellwood on the top line this early? I knew he could do it. He has a bright NHL future ahead of him. An absolute 5th round steal by the horrible leaf scouting staff.

Hopefully they stay together for awhile. Sundin has been working charms with Steen and let's see how he can help develop Mr. Wellwood.

Well, let's hope that we get to watch his career develop from up close... maybe not.

FROM SPECTOR'S MAILBAG.

"Regarding the Leafs-Sharks rumour. It was from Bill Waters on Leafs Lunch 640 am (i.e not The Fan 590). I don't know if The Fan 590 said anything.

Specifically what was mentioned was Stuart or Hannan coming to the
Leafs for one of the young offense. Alexander Steen was mentioned
but considering that San Jose is not dealing from a position of
strength, I would propose it would be Stajan or Wellwood.

This rumour has some rationale to it (i.e. San Jose is one of the few
teams with depth at D), but again considering their relative
positions, San Jose would have to take some weight off the Leafs'
payroll, and none of those three would suffice. Add Antropov or
Allison to the equation with draft picks or prospects going the other
way and we might have something.

"Theangryhockeypuck" also writes: "Regarding the post from am640 a couple days ago. I think it makes sense if players are moved, that they are after december 3 which is next Saturday. Leafs play the Sharks that night so I don't see any deals signed off untill after that. I guess we will have to wait and see. But I think a struggling team such as San Jose is looking to deal, so their might be a bit more truth to this one when concerning the leafers. "

Damn! I forgot I was in LeaferLand, where youth is cast aside. Stuart and Hannan are both good capable dmen but can we do it without one of the kids?

Probably not to gain d-men of that ilk. Obviously moving Antropovious or PoniMagnon man would be the ideal thing... but any team willing to trade with TO would be taking a unlikely gamble with either of those two. Maybe one of them and pick. As Spector points out: Allison is a name that most teams are asking about.

I don't know about trading Allison, he is a bonifide #1 center and we have him making the twin towers of uselessness, actually usefull. Trade the whole line for both Hannan and Stuart. :D

McCabe will never be worth more than he is as the leagues defensive scoring leader.

McCabe, Czerkawski and a prospect for both.:D

All we lose is one dman off the active roster, and we get two back. :D

Yeah... that, and half our PP offence. =]

Stuart is a better dman than McCabe was at his age.

We should be putting one of our big 3 Centers on the point for the full 2min.

He should be put on the 1st line soon. He is one of the most creative playmakers on the whole team.

He was on the first line for 2 or 3 games. Did nothing, and is now back with Stajan and O'neill. Left wing is no good for him. He needs to be playing center, which became apparent this past week.

Trading Wellwood would be terribly stupid..

Speaking of Rumors, here's Eklund's latest:

I also heard an interesting rumor that had Glenn Murray going to the Toronto Maple Leafs. There were no players named but it was my best Toronto source, who never talks to me about trades unless there is some real truth behind them. He said, "I know for fact that they are keeping it way under the radar, but it could easily occur in the next week. I heard that the Bruins want Antropov, and a good pick or prospect. The Leafs and Bruins rarely talk of trade.

Justin Pogge, a Maple Leafs prospect, a goalie, is a name a contact of mine in Boston said that the Bruins would be interested in....

More to come

It makes sense, except for the fact the Leafs and Bruins are in the same division. But if Boston is stupid enough to Trade Thornton away for that type of return, anything could happen in Boston. Trading Pogge hurts, since his stock has skyrocketed since he was drafted, but with Rask and Tellqvist ahead of him on the depth chart, he's probably good trade bait. I could see the leafs trading Antropov, Pogge and maybe some sort of pick for Murray, if this has any validity.

As for trading Poni, worst idea ever. He's finally coming into his own. IMO, I'd rather not get Murray. I'd rather get a speedy winger to go with Allison and Poni in exchange for Antropov and whatever. A speedster would really fit well with that line IMO.

Based on the Bruins last trade, it is a good time to try and make a trade with Boston if you are another team, and steal a ripoff deal in your favor.
