Forsberg hurt in Flyers win
Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) - Peter Forsberg scored two goals and added an assist before sitting out the third period with a right groin strain as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 5-3 on Friday.

Simon Gagne had a goal and two assists and Antero Niittymaki made 25 saves as the Flyers sent the Bruins to their seventh loss in eight games, and fourth consecutive at home.

Forsberg scored the winner with 6:54 left in the second period, putting home the rebound of Gagne's shot. The Flyers said Forsberg is day-to-day.

Gagne gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with 3:49 to play in the first period with his team-leading 21st goal. Forsberg dug the puck out from behind the net and passed in front to former Bruin Mike Knuble. Knuble slid the puck across the crease to an uncovered Gagne on the far post.

The Flyers made it 2-0 on a bizarre power-play goal 4:15 into the second. Bruins defenceman Hal Gill and Forsberg fought for the puck behind the net. Gill fired the puck off the boards in an attempt to clear it, but it flew up in the air and over the net, hit goalie Andrew Raycroft, and fell into the net. Eric Desjardins was credited with the goal.

After the Flyers took a 2-0 lead, the Bruins scored three goals in just over four minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Eric Nickulas scored the first with 14:18 to play in the period, beating a defender then firing into the net as he tripped over Niittymaki's pads.

Joe Thornton tied the game when he broke in alone and beat Niittymaki on the glove side three minutes later. Jiri Slegr gave the Bruins the lead when he fired a shot through traffic that beat Niittymaki glove side again, just 1:09 after Thornton's goal.

Forsberg scored his first goal on the power play with 8:56 to play in the second. Michal Handzus scored an empty-net goal in the final minute.

NOTES: The Bruins recalled LW Eric Healey from their AHL affiliate in Providence. Healey, from nearby Hull, played in his first NHL game after eight years in the minors. He took RW Glen Murray's spot on the roster. Murray, with a team-leading 12 goals, sat out with a slight groin strain and is listed day to day . . . D Kevin Dallman and RW Colton Orr were also scratches for the Bruins. C Patrick Sharp was a scratch for the Flyers . . . Flyers LW Donald Brashear took a puck just above his left eye late in the second period that required stitches. He sat out the third period . . . The Bruins have dominated the Flyers in Boston, with a 46-18-12 advantage in the series prior to Friday's game.

I have never seen so many groin injuries in an NHL season like this one so far.
All that lock-out boinking me thinks..

Wait until 18 years from now, it should be the deepest draft ever, if your theory is correct.

Forsberg says he has groin tear, likely out this week

The Philadelphia Flyers will likely be without Peter Forsberg the rest of this week after the center told the Philadelphia Inquirer he has a tear of his right groin muscle.

Forsberg, who has already missed four games, was first thought to have a simple strain of the groin, but he told the paper an MRI on Thursday revealed the tear.

"There was more damage there that any of us thought -- more than I thought," Forsberg told the paper.

Forsberg, the Flyers' leading scorer with 39 points, has been aggressively rehabbing in the past week, but after skating for 45 minutes felt worse than he'd expected and so he underwent the MRI exam.

The seven-time All-Star told the paper he did not believe the hard workouts to recover from what he thought was a strain caused the tear.

"I thought that if I didn't push it and then went into the game, it could be 10 times worse," Forsberg told the Inquirer. "The problem is, this is not game speed. It felt good for the longest time, but this is worse than we thought. I don't think I was too aggressive. Who knew it was a tear? It shouldn't be too long [for healing] now.

"I didn't think it could get worse; I just knew it was there. The MRI said it was a Grade I tear, just a little tear in the muscle. It should heal by itself. ... There is nothing you can do about it except let it heal and try not to tear it open again."

The Flyers host Calgary on Tuesday night, Edmonton on Thursday and Minnesota on Saturday. Forsberg said he would like to play Saturday, but is not optimistic.

"I don't know about this week," he told the paper. "I was so positive last week that I was going to play. I wanted to play last Saturday [in Nashville]. Whatever I say might be viewed more optimistically than the actual reality."

This was the one thing Philly had to be worried about in making Forsberg their guy. He's just not very durable.

I don't understand these players/trainers who think nothing of stressing a groin strain, from my own experience with them, all you can do is rest it or you're almost sure to make it worse if you push it too early. I won't be surprised if he's out a while now.

Damn. Wish this had come out before the pool's weekly trade deadline. This sounds like it maybe one of those "nagging" injuries.
Too bad. When will this guy stay healthy for consecutive seasons?

I seem to remember a similar situation a few years ago where Forsberg had a nagging foot injury (I think) and missed quite a bit of time because of it. No doubt that when he's healthy he can be an amazing player to have, but he's played 70+ games only 5 times in his career. Seems he's brought the injury bug to the Flyers as well.:D

The Flyers have had alot of injuries this year. Speaking of which, anyword on Kapanen?

Forget Kapanen... Esche has groin problems and now Pitkanen is going under the knife and will miss 4-6 weeks.

The injury bug is hitting this team hard... hopefully for them, they get everyone back healthy for the 2nd half of the season to make a strong run.

In the mean time they'll have to find ways to win without some key players.

With the injuries they still won a hard fought game against the lames last night. First scoreless game to be determined by shootout. Kapenen has been back for 1 or 2 games now, I think.

I was wondering if that was the first 1-0 SO.
Saw kapanen in the highlights. Thanks anyway though.
They lost Desjardins to a shoulder injury now too.

Kapanen has been back for 6 or 7 games, not 1 or 2.
