He may get some answers, good or bad, in the next stretch of games. The Leafs play six games in nine days, starting with Friday's game at Carolina, a period that should act as a good barometer of what this team is made of.
"It's going to be a challenge for us, there's no question about it," Quinn said after Thursday's practice at Air Canada Centre. "And not only because of the rapid number of games and the lack of opportunity to recover properly physically, but also the discipline that's going to be necessary when you're a little bit tired, because that's when mistakes start to happen.

"This is going to be a real test."

The Leafs (12-8-2) continue to search for an identity one game past the quarter pole of the season. Can they really compete with the Ottawas of the world? Captain Mats Sundin also feels the upcoming six-game stretch in nine days will be very telling.

"It's a great test for our team," Sundin said. "And we've got to play some good teams, starting with Carolina (14-6-1) tomorrow and then Montreal (14-5-3) on Saturday. It's a critical period of the season for us."

The head scratching began after Wednesday's dismal performance in a 5-1 home loss to Boston, the Bruins needing that victory to snap a six-game losing streak. Quinn had hoped a recent four-game win streak by his team, the best stretch of the young season for the Leafs, was a sign that his club had turned the corner.

Wrong.

"We thought we were going to have an easy game last night and that was part of the problem," Quinn said.

"We were reading all this nice stuff about us," he added sarcastically, "so we had our feet up on the desk to start the game last night and figured our marvellous skill would just take over any time we wanted."

If the Leaf players wondered how Quinn would react to Wednesday's effort, they got their answer when they arrived in the dressing room Thursday morning and saw which jersey colour they were assigned for practice.

New linemates all around.

"Players have to understand that it's not always status quo, especially if you're not working at your job," Quinn said. "We had some guys who probably didn't work too well last night and maybe don't deserve to stay into certain status spots.

"I think you shake it up to hopefully get them thinking about what their jobs are rather than it just being a cruise out there."

The line shakeup, at least in practice, featured Mariusz Czerkawski making a return from Popcorn Alley, from healthy scratch to top line duty with Sundin and Darcy Tucker. The other lines saw Eric Lindros between Alexander Steen and Tie Domi, Kyle Wellwood with Matt Stajan and Jeff O'Neill (a little demotion for the slumping O'Neill), while Jason Allison remained at centre between Alexei Ponikarovsky and Nik Antropov.

Chad Kilger, Clarke Wilm and Wade Belak skated together on the Press Box Line.

"We thought let's move them around and see what we could bring out of that," Quinn said. "But I haven't decided for sure what the lines will be tomorrow."

Czerkawski has dressed in only six games (one assist) this season, his last game coming nearly a month ago on Oct. 27. He needs to grab this opportunity before Quinn totally loses confidence in him.

"I'm excited," he said after practice. "I've been patiently waiting for a while. I just have to play my game, move the puck and create some chances.

"I'll get a chance tomorrow, and hopefully I can have an impact."

After Montreal, the Leafs head to the road to face Florida on Monday, Tampa Bay next Wednesday and Atlanta next Thursday. They wrap up the current six-game stretch at home against San Jose on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Haha pressbox line.

The Leafs could really make some noise in the Eastern Conference over the next 9 days.
I think they are 7th right now, but if they can put a streak together they could set themselves up for a good chance at something in the Top 4.
This is where we start to see what teams are made of.

I agree Ferret. This stretch right here has huge implications on what we're going to do this year.

It depends on which team shows up on the road trip. In 2003/04 the leafs had a bad western trip and were not doing well then they roll into Vancouver win one soundly and take the next from Vancouver at the ACC and got onto a roll. From what I saw of the Boston game I hope that it was a one game anomoly Leaf fans. Burn the tapes of that game and move on. A good run of games could position the team in a comfortable spot in the east.

What's with Czerkawski going from a healthy scratch for a month to Line 1?
Odd?

Welcome to Leafer land, home of Mad King John and Crazy Prince Quinn. Beassured that if it is in their power, youth will be kept in check, as nothing is as valuable as experience. The fact we led the league in Geritol consumtion for the last half decade is a testament to how much we value the leadership qualities players learn with age.
To this end we know that you our fans will appreciate Marius' abilities and how he deserves to be on the first line. Meanwhile we would like to exetend our appreciation to Matt Stajan and Kyle Wellwood who have been the hardest working leafs for the past two weeks. And although many believe their hard work should be rewarded with a shot on the top line, we feel the experience Marius' brings is more important.

Thank you for enduring our incompetence.

I'm surprised they haven't waived that loafer :thumb: :eyebug:

That line isn't necessarily the top line. Sundin hasn't been that great lately.. and we all know about Czerkawski. Tucker has good chemistry with Mats so I guess they are trying to wake him back up, and in the process light a fire under Czerkawski's ass.

I don't mind giving Czerkawski a chance but there's no way that Kilger should be a healthy scratch tonight.I don't like the line combo's either and think its time Sundin and Lindros played together.Let the kids play more too and less of Antropov!

Cheers

He may play well for 5-10 games. Then you think.. "Wow, I was wrong all along about this Polish prince! :) "

Then all of a sudden..he is back as a healthy scratch :coffee:

The Polish Prince didn't do much last night but todays a different day and just maybe playing against his former team might inspire him to play better. The Leafs must play better than they did last night against Carolina or they'll lose this game vs the Habs.I thought the Leafs were lucky to even get a point last night as the reffing once again was horrible and the Leafs got away with alot of calls in the 3rd period. The team has to be better and consistent!

Cheers
