Everybody has heard of Crosby and Ovetchkin in a supposed two horse race for the Rookie of the Year.
But is there a Darkhorse in the crowd?
Is there a rookie you've seen that you think may have an outside shot?

Kidding aside I don't think anyone other than those two stand a chance, not due to play but due to media hype and attention.
I think there's allot of good kids playing Calder worthy hockey right now and getting no attention because of the Crosby / Ovechkin overkill. Phanuef, Steen, Meszaros to name a few.

Ya no room for mez, or vanek or Jokinen, Seabrook theres a ton of good young guys. Perry and Brule have had injuries. Getzlaf, Parise the list will get longer before it gets shorter.
If there is a Darkhorse right now it is either Phaneuf or one of the Goalies. The other forwards just can't compare the numbers, to Sid or Alex.

Phaneuf
Even though I dont like the look of the guy :thumb:
Svatos is quietly tearing it up in Colorado. He might fly under the radar because of the big names around him... but his numbers (10g, 9a) are on par with Ovechkin and Crosby... and he is the only one of those 3 with a plus rating. He also does not get nearly as much ice time or PP time as the other 2.
Nobody else is going to come close I don't think. Honestly I feel that as long as Crosby remains among the highest scoring rookies, he is a lock.
Lundqvist would have to a) get the undisputed starting job away from Weekes... and b) keep his solid numbers going all season. Very long shot for both of those to happen.
(I misread the question and voted Svatos... I say it goes to Crosby, if not him then Ovechkin).

I still think that Ovechkin or Crosby will win it. Ovechkin and Kolzig are the only reason that the Capitals aren't completely in the toilet. A smart move on McPhee's part to keep Oli the Goalie and yep that Ovechkin kid isn't too shabby either.
I wonder if the hype around Crosby and Ovechkin will cause some people to overlook what the others have done.

I think it's going to be either Crosby or Ovechkin. Phaneuf is the only other guy on that list that I think has a chance at the Calder, but with all the talk about Crosby and Ovechkin, one or the other will end up winning it.
My preseason pick for the Calder was Lehtonen, but that didn't work out very well.
I will definitely have one eye on tonight's first meeting between Ovechkin and Crosby. :pimp:
They both compliment each other but deep down I have to think they will be trying like hell to out-shine eachother tonight. Should be a good one.

No I'm not going. I'll just be flipping between that and the Ranger game on Center Ice probably.
I'll be in Boston on Friday and I may catch the Bruins - Flyers noon game if the tickets come through. I've never been to the new Boston arena.
I was supposed to attend the Rangers - Caps game Saturday night for my first look at Ovechkin. But I think we swithced and will be going later in the season now, I have to find out.

It's nice. I went last week when the Leafs were in town. Toronto Dominion Bank owns it, so I felt right at home. Just don't toss cans of Beans onto the ice... they don't seem to like that anymore.
My father used to take to Bruin games at Boston garden in the 70's when I was a pup. Man what a zoo! To this day I can recall fights and brawls all over the stands. My father fighting 2 other guys for a puck and the whole section cheering them on lol. I also remember Terry O'Reilly brawling and blood all over the ice and the refs. The NHL was different back then.
Ahh memories.
Lundqvist. The guys the real deal, and I think the NY Media could really boost him to godlike Status.
Well the Pens have jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st of the "Calder battle".
Neither did much until Crosby handled a bouncing puck to split the D and just smoked Kolzig. Wicked! That kid is really something. I can't believe he's just 18.
Both he and Ovechkin are going to be fun to watch for many years to come. :thumb:
EDIT: 4-0 in the first.

As much as I was on Crosby's case earlier in the season, if he keeps playing the way he has lately, he will deserve the Calder. Between the shootout winner against the Habs and the goal against Kolzig, the kid has some lethal moves, and with some of the passes he makes, he's going to be fun to watch.
Ovechkin is also one hell of a player. The thing I like about him is that not only can he score, but he's not afraid to mix it up physically. The other weekend against the Devils, he absolutely smoked Colin White behind the net. And as much as I disliked his antics during the WJC, I think his personality is something the NHL has lacked in recent years.

I don't think so,its Crosby's to lose! After last months "Rookie of the month" award going to Crosby(in which I think was so obviously fixed)I can see the NHL just giving it to him if he finishes anywhere near the top of rookie scoring. He's been very impressive this month but after last months "ROTY" award win its left a sour taste in my mouth and I don't trust the NHL!
Cheers

Flame rookie rewarded
Calgary rearguard Dion Phaneuf is NHL rookie of the month.
NEW YORK (CP) -- Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who led all rookie defencemen in scoring in November, has been named the NHL rookie of the month.
The Edmonton native recorded three goals and six assists last month as the Flames went 10-2-1.
Phaneuf edged centre Sidney Crosby and defenceman Ryan Whitney, both of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Washington Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin and Colorado Avalanche winger Marek Svatos for the award.
Phaneuf recorded his first three-point game in the NHL when he had a goal and two assists in a 4-3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks Nov. 7.
Phaneuf was Calgary's top pick, ninth overall, in the 2003 NHL draft.
There is one Rookie Award the "other two" won't get.
This kid could steal the calder due the lower expectations, when compared to Crosby and Ovetchkin. Expectations he is meeting and succeeding. Good one Dion. Keep it up.

Alot of the media seem to want to hype the Calder Trophy race as being between only Ovechkin and Crosby. Perhaps Phaneuf winning rookie of the month, when his play was not that superior to his own excellent first month; while Ovechkin and Crosby, both slighty improved; will show that Phaneuf is also being considered for this award thus far in the year. It should be an exciting race between the three, if all mantain their current levels, or even progress at a similar rate. I expected Vanek to be in the hunt before the year, but it doesnt look like he will be at all. I even though Parise might be a dark horse, but it is clear he too has fallen out of it already.
(I merged your thread with the previous Calder trophy thread because it is the original Calder race thread and Phaneuf was one of the players being discussed. Iced Tea)

You seem to be forgetting about the #3 guy in rookie scoring, Marek Svatos. He has played very well in Colorado and may be in the race. But you alsohave to incluse the Rangers' Lundqvist. And there are other guys that could step up their play and hit a hot streak that propels them over these guys.
It'll either be Crosby or Ovechkin.

I couldnt see Svatos actually getting into serious Calder candidate range by the end of the year, but who knows, crazier things have happened. Lundqvist will have a hard time winning that as a backup, but if Weekes keeps so injury-prone he might end the year considered as a starter.
I actually picked Fritsche as a dark horse for the Calder before the year, and now he is sent to the minors. He sure started off on fire, matching Ovechkin's 2 goals in the opening NHL game for Columbus and Washington.
