Red Wings defenceman Jiri Fischer collapses on team's bench during game

DETROIT (CP) - Detroit Red Wings defenceman Jiri Fischer collapsed on the team's bench during the first period of a game against the Nashville Predators on Monday night.

It was unclear what caused him to collapse, but reports suggested the 25-year-old Czech took a puck to the throat while seated on the bench with 7:31 left to play in the period.

The game was stopped immediately and players from both teams were sent to their dressing rooms.

An ambulance came to the end of the arena while medical staff attended to Fischer.

Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman and forward Brendan Shanahan stayed on the ice and helped Fischer's fiancee, Avery, across the surface to be with the player.

Shortly after Fischer was taken into the bowels of the arena, zambonis came onto the ice to re-surface it.

Nashville was leading 1-0 when the game was stopped.

Wow, I hope he's okay. According to ESPNEWS they had to use CPR and a defribrilator (spelling?) on him.

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Just saw part of the FSN Detroit feed from this. One of the scariest things I've seen in a long time. You can see somebody from the medical staff pumping on Fischer's chest, and everybody on the bench with a scared look on their face.:(

I hope Fischer gets through this okay.

TSN has a quote on the frontpage from Red Wings spokesman John Hahn saying "It looks like he's going to be OK."
I watched this all happen live, the announcers' voices were of desperation and seeing them perform CPR made me feel ill. It really looked and sounded bad for a short while. Again, thank God Jiri is in stable and responsive condition.

Been watching NHL Network, nothing at all shown yet.

What a freak thing to happen, getting hit by a puck made some sense, but without that, what caused it? Dehydration? Is this another substance abuse case or something congenital?

Whatever it is, sounds like he's lucky to be alive, hopefully he's out of the woods and secondarily, can one day safely resume his hockey career.

Fischer was diagnosed with a heart abnormality in September 2002, causing him to miss two days of practice. The problem was found on an electrocardiogram as part of a routine battery of tests during the Red Wings' pre-season physicals. When the result was abnormal, Fischer was given a stress test that he passed.

"There is a little abnormality, but nothing that will stop me from playing," Fischer said at the time. "It's nothing that will bother me emotionally."

He said that his heart essentially is a little thicker than normal.

"I wasn't scared about the abnormality," Fischer said. "But I was scared about not playing hockey again. That was a shock for me."

Holy cr@p. Just saw the replay. That is scary.

Showed the guy pumping on his chest. I'm shaking and I don't even know him.

Best wishes to Jiri and his family.

I've had to revive two of my buddies. It's freaky, blue lips, super pale face, blank eyes, it's not nice.
The Good news is that he was awake and talking before they had even cancelled the game.

This is the latest news I can find:
DETROIT Defensman Jiri Fischer of the Detroit Red Wings is, "doing very, very well" and is in, "great spirits, cracking jokes." Wings' general manager Ken Holland and team physician Tony Colucci told reporters today that Fischer's heart stopped during the game last night and that an auto defibrillator was used before he was taken to the hospital.

Colucci said that Fischer had stopped breathing and didn't have a pulse before he began C-P-R and chest compressions. He said that for now he has no idea what triggered the incident and that further testing will take place.

Trouble again????
Another scare for Fischer

Sportsnet.ca -- Jiri Fischer of the Red Wings was released from a Detroit hospital Wednesday after undergoing further testing and observation.

The defenceman had returned to the Detroit Medical Center after experiencing a brief, abnormal cardiac rhythm while resting at home this past Monday eveing. He is scheduled to undergo further testing at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

The 25-year-old Czech collapsed and went into convulsions in the first period of a game November 21 against Nashville. Team physician Dr. Tony Colucci wasn't able to detect a pulse after Fischer collapsed, and an auto defibrillator was used on the player.

After performing CPR, Colucci said he detected a good pulse and Fischer was taken out of the arena by ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital. The game was postponed.

Colucci said Fischer's heart might have stopped, but he didn't know for how long.

Fischer's blood pressure and heart rate were stable by the time he arrived at the hospital.

The exact cause of Fischer's collapse was not known, but Colucci said on Tuesday the defibrillator indicated that Fischer's heart may have been experiencing ventricular tachycardia, a kind of racing heartbeat, or ventricular fibrillation, a heart fluttering.

Both can cause death, and ventricular fibrillation is a common cause of sudden cardiac arrest.

Fischer was diagnosed with a heart abnormality in 2002, causing him to miss two days of practice. When the 2002 result came back, Fischer was given a stress test that he passed, and he said his heart essentially is a little thicker than normal.

Yikes, that does not bode well at all, at this point you have to doubt that he'll ever play again, hopefully he can at least lead a fairly normal life.

He should be fine to still play. Enlarged hearts, arithmia or agina, are forms of Heart disease that many people have who also manage to lead normal lives. It's unpredictable, and concerning reactions like this can happen suddenly with out any other problems for months or years. Excersice can be a contributer to set of these problems, but being the age that Fischer is, I doubt that he'll be advised, or even want, to take it easy in the form of a career change. There is medication to help. But, for the most part you have to live with it... my guess is that he'll keep plugging away on his skates.

I hope you're right bluemeanie, but I have to wonder whether either he/the Wings/doctors/insurance companies will want to take the risk of him dying on the job. I believe it should be his decision, but so often these days it isn't, it would be a real shame if he wasn't allowed to continue to live his dream because of some beancounter's weak stomache.

Predators-Red Wings game rescheduled for Jan. 23, 2006

NEW YORK -- National Hockey League Game #312, the Nashville Predators against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena - the game that was interrupted on November 21 - has been re-scheduled for Monday, January 23, 2006, at 7:30 p.m., Detroit time. As a result, NHL Game #720, the Red Wings against the Predators at Gaylord Entertainment Center, has been rescheduled from Jan. 23 to March 30 at 7 p.m., Nashville time.

The original game, which was halted at 12:30 of the first period due to a medical emergency involving Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer, will be replayed for a full 60 minutes of regulation time, plus any potential overtime and shootout. The rescheduled contest will begin with the Predators ahead, 1-0 - the score at the time play was stopped Nov. 21.

"In reaching a determination as to how best to deal with this unique and extraordinary set of circumstances, our first consideration was fairness to our fans. We did not think it fair to ask them to come out again for only 47 minutes of regulation hockey," said Colin Campbell, NHL Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations. "However, in light of the circumstances that led to the termination of play on Nov. 21, and after consultation with both teams, we also have decided that the rescheduled contest will begin with the Predators ahead, 1-0. A goal will be credited to Greg Johnson, with assists to Ryan Suter and Scottie Upshall. All other statistics will be expunged."

Game's rescheduled. Now if only Fischer could be healthy enough to play in it.
