Ortiz-Shamrock: The Rivalry Continues on Season 3 of The Ultimate Fighter
By Thomas Gerbasi
LAS VEGAS, November 19 - From the first time they got in the same room together, Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock didn?t like each other. And then it got worse.
A 2002 victory by Ortiz over Shamrock at UFC 40 ? Vendetta, did little to ease the tension between the two warriors, and for the last three years, neither has allowed an opportunity to take a jab at the other pass.
But now, in 2006, two of the UFC?s greatest stars will get to clash again ? as the coaches on Season Three of Spike TV?s hit reality series The Ultimate Fighter. And if they can survive 40 days in the same house with each other, they will meet again ? in the Octagon at the season finale.
?I?m very excited about this and it?s going to make great television for Season Three,? said UFC President Dana White, who has had a contentious relationship of his own with Ortiz, who he formerly managed. ?Tito and I really don?t get along at all, and really aren?t too fond of each other; Ken and Tito don?t get along and really aren?t too fond of each other, so I think it?s going to make for a very interesting season.?
Spike TV?s The Ultimate Fighter takes 16 of the most promising unsigned mixed martial artists in the world and puts them in the same house together over a 40-day period that involves competitions, rigorous training, and elimination fights to determine the Ultimate Fighters in two weight divisions. The winners of the competition earn six figure contracts with the UFC.
In the first two seasons of the show, the coaches (Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell in Season One and Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes in Season Two) were competitive with each other, but there was no animosity involved.
Not this time.
And with Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz in the same house together, sparks are bound to fly.
?This is totally gonna depend on Tito Ortiz,? said Shamrock. ?I?m one of those people that will roll with the flow and I will do what I need to do. But if I?m disrespected in any way, shape, or form, I will confront that disrespect.?
For his part, Ortiz says he respects Shamrock, even though he doesn?t like him.
?It?s business, man,? said Ortiz. ?I?ve already laid my beatdown on him and he knows. But I respect the guy. I may not like him as a person, but as a fighter I?ve got to respect him. I threw everything at him and he still stood up to it.?
?I honestly don?t know how this is gonna work, but that?s the great thing about reality TV,? said White. ?We?ll all get in a room, do our thing and see what happens.?
