Too many penalty shots....or what?

During Broda's day, they used to take them from a 20' dia. circle 38' from the goal line.

A player is awarded a penalty shot if he is tripped and prevented from shooting while having no other player to pass to. The shot must be taken from within the penalty shot circle. The goalie must not advance more than one foot from the front of his net. A full crease (8' x 5') is also painted on the ice.

This rule was in place for the seasons 1934/35 until 1941/42.

Turk Broda and his club completed one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history with their 4th straight win, a 3-1 victory over Detroit in game 7 of the Stanely Cup Final. Broda allowed the Red Wings just 7 goals in the final 4 games.

Do you have an opinion on the rule changes and increased frequency of penalty shots?

Perhaps Broda was gay?

As for penalty shots..a few are alright. But the refs are calling a few too many IMO

I have a strange perspective on this. I would like to see more of the minor penatlies that are being called turned into a penalty shot in stead of a 2 min minor. I know it sounds weird but as long as it doesn't dramatically slow the game any more than having deal with a 2 min minor it would allow for more 5-on-5.

Then they could get rid of the padding, the ice, the sticks, the puck, and play with a ball on grass and call it football (soccer). LOL sorry I couldn't resist.

Actually I thought of soccer as I was writing it.
But everyone is complaining about too many penalties and not enough 5-on-5. I think penalty shots may even cut down on the number of penalties. Judging by the temper of most goalies, they would be on their teammates case for every bad penalty shot they're forced to face. Or worse, if you've pissed him off, the goalie let's your penalties(penalty shots) go in.:D

Seriously if they could get the whole thing done in ten to twenty seconds, and not have it drag on like this sentence, I think the additional even strength play would be to everyone's enjoyment.

I've got no problem with penaulty shots in principal. Just as long as I don't have to see it on the streets and that children aren't involved. I mean.. if some guy jumps another guy... he may or may not like it... but if they feel that dealing with it or resolving it means that one guy shoots and another catches... so be it. As long as they do it in the privacy of their own net. I'm pretty opened minded... but, it does seem that everywhere you look these days there's an increase in penaulty shots. I mean... their freakin everywhere.
