NHL gambling pool
How it works
Yup another pool, but this one has a twist. This may sound involved but it's actually very simple to participate. Everyone starts off with 500 points to gamble with. All you need to do is...
1) Pick a player. That NHL player will accrue points throughout the week based on the below table. As you can see, it's possible to accrue negative points.
2) Pick a multiplier. here's where it gets interesting. Your mulitplier determines how heavily you want to gamble that week. If you choose a multiplier of 20 for example, then that week's point total gets multiplied by 20. 10 points would become 200. -8 points would become -160. On the other hand, if you choose a multiplier of 2, that guards against too large of a swing in either direction.
This is how player's points are determined for all games during the week.
TEAM STATS (each game played results in one of the following)
shutout win +10 points (regulation)
regulation win +5 points
overtime win +3 points
shootout win +1 points
shootout loss -1 points
overtime loss -3 points
regulation loss -5 points
shutout loss -10 points (regulation)
INDIVIDUAL STATS (cumulative for all games played during the week)
goals +3 points
assists +2 points
scoreless game -4 points (no goals or assists in a game)
RULES:
Sending Mel a PM (http://www.hockeystation.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=2) is the ONLY official way to enter or update your picks!
Deadline for entry is Sat. November 26 at midnight ET.
A week consists of all games played from Sunday through Saturday.
You may pick a new player and multiplier each week, deadline is midnight ET Saturday for the following week. (Private message only!)
The previous week's player and multiplier are automatically carried over unless new picks are submitted for that week by the deadline.
If you run out of points, you are eliminated from competition.
Competition runs as long as there is more than one participant remaining through the 2006 playoffs.
PLAYER / GAME ELIGIBILITY
If your chosen player is scratched from a game for any reason, they do not accrue any points for that game.
If your chosen player is in the starting lineup, they accrue both team and individual points for that game, even if they leave the game prematurely due to injury or ejection.
As with standard NHL scoring, shootout goals do not count for individual scoring stats.
Late joiners
Late joiners will be permitted up till Saturday December 10th, but will not be alloted 500 points to start. Those who miss the dealine but join by the December 3rd cut-off will be alloted 300 points. Those who miss the deadline but join by the December 10th cut-off will be alloted 150 points. No one is permitted to join past the December 10th cut-off.
Again, to start with 500 points you must PM me with both your player and multiplier number by November 26th. Competition begins on the week of November 27 - December 3.
I will post the picks and multipliers each week along with updated standings. :)
Please note that the pool has been adjusted so that every one starts off with 500 points. The late joiner point allowances have been increased to 300 and 150 respectively. This is because most entrants picked a higher multiplier number than I expected, so we'll start with 500 each.
If you have already joined, and wish to change your multiplier number because of the increased point allowance... I will accept changes up until they drop the puck on your player's first game. This is a one-time first week exception. Going forward the deadline will remain Saturday at midnight ET.
If you have not already joined, and wish to participate there's still time to send me your player and multiplier number via private message (http://www.hockeystation.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=2).
Tomorrow we begin. This thread can be used for pool discussion. I will have another closed thread for picks and standings review.

All picks in?
How many chose someone who does not play for Ottawa?
Never mind I found the list.
looks like we might have a straggler or two... I will let anyone in right now - as long as they pick a player who has not played yet this week.
If he's already played then you must wait till next week to join.
Well it didn't take long for Demitra and the Kings to put me in the hole

Well it didn't take long for Demitra and the Kings to put me in the hole
Sorry! My fault. I put him in in the SN pool. I am going through my everything I touch dies phase, of the season. The fewer decisions I make the better off I am. Either slumps or injuries, I can pick 'em. Last season during this period, if I put a player in, they would be hurt that week. At one point I couldn't fill a 20 man roster, and I had 12 players on the bench. So I didn't have 20 healthy bodies out of 32 players. Sorry again. :thumb:
Well at the conclusion of our first week, we really didn't have any big losers except for........ ME! :curse:
the first place Kings picked this week to go on a 4 game losing skid.
I had to pull out the calculator to figure my points.
Oh crap! I missed the deadline!!

Atleast I'm not last :thumb:
Sorry Mel!
Oh crap! I missed the deadline!!
I will allow post-deadline changes IF:
- your new chosen guy's games have not started
- your old (carried over) guy's games have not started.
To GUARANTEE that your changes will be accepted... you must meet the Saturday midnight deadline.
If you submit your changes AFTER the saturday midnight deadline, I will still honor them if they fall under the above criteria, based on the time of the PM.
I updated the chart above to clarify.... a shutout, shoot-out loss only incurs the -1 for a shootout loss.
the -10 is reserved for a regulation shutout loss.
Therefor Calgary's 1-0 shoot out loss will only be a -1, when I update tomorrow.
Well Jagr has been berry berry good to the 5 of us who had him this week... he managed to put up 16 gambling points despite a scoreless game in Chicago. And it's no coincidence that the new top 5 all had Jagr last week.
High rolling Canucklehead had the biggest week (75x multiplier) for a super gain of 1,950.
Ottawa was a different story this week with all players putting up negative numbers. Alfie and Heatley both had 2 scoreless games... while Spezza failed to register a single point in all 3 Ottawa games this past week.
Posting new standings and this week's picks shortly. :)
Well, most of us came out ahead this week, some more than others.
There's a new kingpin of the high rollers in town by the name of Madferret. Even though Thornton only had one game this week, big Joe came through with 10 points, to earn ferret an easy 4 grand!
Best player on the week point-wise was Datsyuk, the worst ironically was last week's hero, Jaromir Jagr.
NOTE: Next Sunday is Christmas and I'll be out of town. You can send me next week's pick any time, per the standard deadline rules for next week's games. I'll check my PM's and make the updates when I return.
Since the NHL week is over early, I had some free time this morning to update the standings.
What a difference a week makes. We had some huge losers this week, namely those who bet the farm on Joe Thornton. Joe and his Sharks through 4 games this past week tallied a disappointing -10 for the gambling pool, and unfortunately resulted in our first 2 eliminations. Better luck next time guys.
I will list next week's picks when I get back in town on Monday. Any one left can send me new picks at any time under the regular weekly deadline rules.
Happy Holidays :)

Question about player stats. The rules says that if a player doesn't dress they dont accure points. Call me silly but would that mean I wouldn't lose -4 a game as I have Allison this week and he's been out since game 1 of this week with a broken finger?

Yeah you got it. If a player doesn't dress, it's like the game never happened for them - no personal or team points at all.
We had no losers this week. The big point earner was Alfie with an eye-popping 28 points. Hats off to butterfly_style.
:pimp:
Notable week in the gambling pool.
First, the ugly... Sorry to say we lost another player this week, when TimmyTabasco's pick of Olie Jokinen went horribly wrong. 2 shutout losses in the week sunk the Panthers... and Timmy.
The Bad... Picking Senators is not as much of a no-brainer as it used to be, as yours truly took the 2nd largest loss on the week with Danny Heatley... meanwhile, Alfie played no games last week and Spezza just one.
The good... Jagr had another typical good week, stat-wise... but 2 Ranger OT losses were dragging down his totals. However they preserved a shutout win yesterday, along with 2 Jagr goals to lift Jagr's total week to +19. Canadian26 and a4l cleaned up nicely there, both raking in 950.
Also Peter Forsberg brought home an impressive +21 on the week for J.R. the birthday boy. Nice pick.
The awesome... the man, the myth, the kingpin of the high rollers..... Madferret!!!! :pimp:
Big Joe T racked up an impressive +21 with only 2 games on the schedule last week. Combine that with ferret's big-time multiplier of 400 and we had our new single week record gain of 8,400. Way to go Ferret!

I am the Lizard King!
Another week another 4 G's for the kingpin: Mad "let it ride" Ferret!
Watching ferret live the high life while I toil away in a life of drudgery... I am no longer content to be a spectator in this life. So I'm risking it all this week.
Jagr x500 :pimp: :pimp: :pimp: :pimp:
Yagr better not disappoint me this week or I am sunk.:smoke::smoke::boogie:

It takes allot of prayers and allot of vitamins but the reward is definitely worth all the sacrifices I make each week for this pool.
Great team-mates, great coaching, and a personal dedication to be the best makes a world of difference, but you all are in need of stepping it up..
Wow 18 points for myself from last night's game alone.
Ottawa with the shutout: +10.
Alfredsson with two goals: +6.
Alfredsson with an assist: +2.
Oh, butterfly_style that would have been nice with your 500X bet. ;)

I know . . .I picked a bad week to switch from Alfie.
I've already notified Margerine Mel of my desire to switch back . . .providing I haven't been eliminated.
Well some were lucky this week and some were less prosperous.
First I'm sorry to say we lost another player, butterfly_style. But at least he went out with a BANG! -10,500 on the week  Welcome to the losers club my friend. Our weekly luncheon is every Saturday.
Amoroq also fell victim to a Flyers shutout loss yesterday... but he's still in the game, and looking to turn around his fortunes with 200 on Sundin this week.
Even the normally prosperous Madferret took a beating, losing 6,400 on Joe Thornton. But overall, Big Joe has been very good to the ferret. Is this just a bump in the road to millions? Or the beginning of the end of Ferret's hot streak... Stay tuned.
Now for some good news.... Jagr got back on track and lifted the steady and determined Canadian26 into 3rd place.
KeithM finally saw some action with Spezza back, but his pint-sized 10 point multiplier is preventing him from hitting the jackpot any time soon.
Alfie had another monster week for the HS gamblers, posting 28 points with only 2 games on the schedule! Very good numbers indeed. J.R. cashed in... racking up 1,400 and jumping into 2nd place overall.
This week J.R. senses that the ferret is weakening, and has decided to make his move with 500 beans on Alfie. Careful buddy, that has knocked out 3 people in the last 2 weeks. That path is littered with the shattered dreams of those of us who yearned for the high-life, only to wind up broke and ruined. But Alfie and the Sens look unstoppable right now so I have faith.
Good luck to all!
:boogie:
And just like that I lose 7000 points on one game.
Like are you :curse: kidding me? Really are you kidding me?
Ottawa gets shutout: -10.
Alfredsson is pointless: -4.
-14 * 500 = -7000
At least there's three games left this week to make up some points or I'm joining the Losers' Club.

 Wah, wah, wah.
And then there were 4.......
The 500 multiplier has now wrecked people for 3 consecutive weeks. This time J.R. fell victim to an ucharacteristic poor week by Alfie.
Amoroq, who was almost down and out - came roaring back with a big 2,200 gain on the week! Nice job.
Canadian26 meanwhile is poised to make a move on the Ferret who failed to make gains in 2 consecutive weeks now.
stay tuned.... :)
With the Olympic break upon us, we still have 4 people standing.
Ferret got back on track with his winning ways netting a cool 6 G's.
The big story was Jaromir Jagr who put up an absolutely monster week with 3 regulation wins, 5 goals and 3 assists for a total of 36 gambling points! If I'm not mistaken that is by far the best single week gambling performance since we started out.
Canadian26 cashed in for a 3600 gain. Nice Job!
Amo stumbled with Sundin costing him a grand. But he's still alive and kickin!
Gambling pool resumes Feb. 26.
:)
In a tribute to Oscar weekend....I'd like to thank the academy, as well as the Carolina Hurricanes and huge props to my boy Eric Stall!! :D
BOO-YAH!!!!
Amoroq drops the bomb!
Former kingpin of the high-rollers - Mr. Madferret - has been trounced in astounding fashion! The once untouchable ferret suddenly looks like a small-timer!!!
Amoroq made NHL gambling pool history with the combination of Eric Staal and a 1430 point multiplier. Staal and the Canes earned Amo better than 47,000 points
That alone is more than double Ferret's total.
The question is, will ferret take this changing of the guard without a fight? Or will this serve as a wake up call.....

Yeah I didn't get a chance last weekend. I will update on Sunday retroactive.

Don't look now but the fearless ferret has creeped right back up on Amoroq surpassing the 40,000 mark. While Amo still has a comfy lead... it is a lot tighter than it was 2 weeks ago.
Congrats to Canadian26 for passing the 10,000 mark... and to low roller KeithM for joining the 1,000 point club :)
I thought Ferret was untouchable, but Joe T dropped a stinker this week costing Ferret 6400. Meanwhile, Amoroq laid this season's biggest multiplier (1500) on Jagr, and cashed in for 24 large! He now leads Madferret by roughly 40000 points.
It looks like Amo has this thing wrapped. Time is running out...

Is it too late for me to change my wager for this week to 30 000 & my player to Heatley Melly?
The king of the high rollers is back!
Not too late ferret, neither Joe T or Heatley played today so your request will be honored.
30,000 on Danny Heatley it is!
I love it! - This calls for a few pimps! :pimp: :pimp: :pimp:
Amo's got Jagr who doesn't play till Tuesday. I wonder if he'll up the ante....
:wicked:
I'm down.
30,000 on Alfredson :)
OK it's on and crackin'

Alfie has the flu tonight and Heater just popped one in..
:]
Well that settles that! Alfie put Amoroq 240,000 in the hole and he's now ruined. Ferret was flirting with bankruptcy himself, but Heatley's individual performance was just enough to overcome a poor week by the Sens and land him at a +2, netting Ferret a gambling pool record of 60,000 gain in a single week!
This thing looks to be in the bag, however Canadian26 has upped the ante to 3,000. You never know.... a monster week by Jagr could loft C26 into Ferret territory. Will Ferret keep the same multiplier?.......
You got to know when to holdem, know when to foldem, know when to walk away, and know when to run......The flu got me!!

I'm sure I got buried last week.
Nope ferret - you came out ahead 60 large!
not only that but Canadian26 picked the wrong time to go high on Jagr - the Rangers lost 4 straight. C26 could have been running the table all this time with Jagr posting 20-30 points week after week. But lady luck can be cruel and C26 timing was off. result = ruined. (same thing happened to me with Jagr as I recall).
Anyhoo. I'm declaring this thing over and Ferret the winner.
This was fun, but next year I'll do it differently. I'll make the stats easier for myself to calculate (might do away with the whole team point side of things.... not sure yet) and I'll also make it so people don't actually get eliminated, which will keep it fun for all players all season long.
I have till next October to think about it :)
Congrats to Ferret! Finishing up with over 300x his original points!
Congrats also to KeithM who stayed alive by doing the smartest thing of all - nothing. :D

Is it just me or did Mel start a new gambling pool thread for the new season? Maybe I was just imagining it, because now I can't find the thread. Anyways, I was looking forward to playing that game again.
I killed it because nobody sent me any picks - nada one.
i didn't mind because it's a bit of a pain to keep track of... but I don't mind doing it if enough people want to participate.
Lemme know - if we get enough takers I'll restore the thread with the new rules and we'll have another go at it.
I say yay!
Hopefully there's more takers out there...takers, are you out there?

Crap I forgot about this.
Sorry Mel, I'm in if it's going to be resurrected..
OK i am re-posting the thread with adjusted ruled from last season. PM me your picks... we'll start competetion week of Sunday the 15th. I'll push the late entry deadline back a week as well.
Note that this year, there has been some control laid down over how much one can bet (no more than half their total points), and there are no hard eliminations... you get 25 points back if you go broke to keep playing your way back up. Hopefully that keeps it from getting out of whack.
here is the pool for this 06-07...
