View Full Version : Question of the Month - May 2005
Welcome to Question of the Month!
Each month we will throw out a question for you to answer. Whoever gives the closest answer is the winner. Simple as that.
Prize: Winners will get to select their own custom User Title. Your User Title appears under your name, and is based on post count. For example HS Veteran or HS Regular. If you're the winner, you'll be able to specify your own custom user title (subject to approval).
:)
Due to the sorry state of the NHL, we'll have to improvise on questions for now. May's question of the month is baseball related.
What will Ichiro Suzuki's batting average be at the conclusion of the month of May?
That is up through and including the Mariners May 31 meeting with Toronto regardless of what time that game ends.
If you're not a baseball fan, don't worry. Take a guess anyway. Ichiro typically bats well over .300.
His current batting average is .353
Last year he batted .374 on the season.
his career batting average is around .340
Post your guesses in this thread. Cutoff for guessing is April 30th at midnight ET. Guesses posted on May 1 or later (Eastern Time) will not be counted.
Winners will be posted in the site announcements forum.
Good luck :)
(NOTE: Guessing for this month has closed as of May 1)

I don't follow the sport, and have no idea what any of this means
However, .356
.320
BTW can mods play?
Sure mods can participate, but are not eligible for the user title change. In the event that a mod wins, the custom user title will be awarded to the next closest member.
Sounds fair.
Don't worry, if a mod wins, they will still be noted and given credit in the official results. :pimp:
AHHHHHHHHHH
Finally credit where credit is due.......................
Just a question before I throw out my guess (which is all it will be). Is it #51's accumulated average from the beginning of the season until May 31st or is it Ichiro's average from May 1st to May 31st? By the way, it would have been funny to read some of the guesses if you hadn't given the background information. ;)

It's his total average on the 2005 regular season at that moment, from day 1.
NOT his average for the month of May. :) good clarification.
The thing is I rarely follow baseball, there is no doubt that if I slammed into him on the street I would never know it was him.
The thing is I rarely follow baseball, there is no doubt that if I slammed into him on the street I would never know it was him.
That's why I gave all the hints. I realize not everyone here follow baseball.... but it's pretty much guaranteed to be somewhere in the 300's.
Don't be discouraged to vote if you're not a baseball fan. Just throw out a number. Nobody can read the future... he could slip down to the low 300's or he could climb up close to 400 (maybe even higher). With the info I've given there really isn't much of an advantage to those who follow baseball over those who don't.
Next month's question will be a little more general category (not sports related).

No, it doesn't matter if you're over or under. The closest guess wins. In a tie, alll winners will recieve the prize.

Nope you can go over Maxie... closest number wins, take a guess.
I hope you win... I know your custom title would be "better dead than red" or some other neo-conservative battle cry

So far to the end of April his average was .356 . Here is a link for those that are interested in following his batting average -> ESPN.com (http://baseball.espn.go.com/mlb/players/gamelog?statsId=6615)
His TOTAL average to May 6th is .331 .
I use CBS Sportsline for all my statistics, and they're always more up to date.
Right now, he's sitting on .325 (Newfie John's prediction). Chart Ichiro's progress with detailed statistics with CBS Sportsline (http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/211807).
I know my guess doesn't count but I'll say 361 just for the heck of it.

Actually Johnny - you have the low end covered from 325 down...
The only 2 other people who guessed lower than you are mods and not eligible for a custom user title. So you would win.

My birthday is May 31, so it'd be a nice gift. Ichiro could hit 1.000 from here on in with my luck though.
Update May 16
Here we are half way through the month, and Ichiro has worked his average back up to about the middle of the pack at .349
Will he continue raising his average over the next 3 days against the surging New York Yankees? Or will he cool off again? Time will tell.

Custom user title awarded to all winners :)
As of right now with 5 days to go he is hitting .324. I think I got .329 so I have a shot....I think, I have no idea how many hits/outs he would need for him to finish the month at .329

What name would you pick? I vote for the Codfather! :thumb:
The average is going down like Linda Lovelace in Deep Throut. As of now its at .321
Four games to go including to against the sorry devil rays. (other 2 vs. Toronto)
Ain't over till it's over... the season is young enough where Ichiro can still swing his average by 20 - 30 point with a huge weekend. The suspense is killing me!!! :)
Come on Ichiro... may the force be with you! :D

So we all over shot, except The Insider.
Looks like John will be getting the title. Congratulations.
Ichiro is right now at .319 with 1, possibly 2 at bats left unless the mariners go insane. Looks like thie birthday boy has it wrapped up.
and the final answer is ..........
.321
Rusty was closest with .320 but is ineligible as a moderator
and the winner is...... Newfie John with the guess of .325!
Congratulations! Look for official announcement to follow...
Dang, I am gooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddd
Okay I admit I am just damn lucky!
Congratulations Rusty, a brilliant guess.

I love it, but I'm pretty easily amused.
Goodness Gracious Great COD Of Fire!!
Okay, I'm bias... as I may have hinted it on the previous page. The Codfather is pretty good, especially for Johnny. If I remember correctly, KB gave him this nickname in the past...

I can't remember who it was, I'm not sure but I thought it was Timmy who first introduced it when he wanted the name for the Fog Devils to be the Cod Fathers.

Do you always refer to yourself as we? :razz2: :giggle:
