Kovalev facing surgery

MONTREAL (CP) -- Star scorer Alexei Kovalev of the Montreal Canadiens will undergo knee surgery Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Alexei Kovalev is second on the Canadiens with 19 points (7-12) in 18 games.

Habs GM Bob Gainey was to address the media at the Bell Centre later Monday. The Canadiens, off to a solid 12-3-3 start atop the tough Northeast Division, will now be tested without their highest-paid forward.

Kovalev, earning $4.5 million US this season, is second on the Canadiens with 19 points (7-12) in 18 games. He's a major cog on the first line with captain Saku Koivu and winger Richard Zednik and on the first power-play unit.

Kovalev played the whole MTL / TOR game did he not?

Kovalev returns to face Senators
The Ottawa Senators hope to remain on track tonight when they visit the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre, but Alexei Kovalev might have something to say about it.

Time for Montreal to right the ship and get back to the top of the conference.

Yeah, thats some good news. Kovalev is a big part of the team's success.

But, there are other injuries at the moment.

Hopefully Gainey has a word with the boys, and they get their act together
