Might just be the best CFL game I've ever watched.

ESKIMOS 33, STAMPEDERS 26

Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 09:15PM

The Edmonton Eskimos battled back from a 23-9 deficit in the second quarter to defeat the Calgary Stampeders 33-26 in the Scotiabank West Semifinal.

The Eskimos scored their first touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 16 play, 93 yard drive led by quarterback Jason Maas to pull even for the first time since early in the first quarter. Mathieu Bertrand was successful on a run from the goal line. The play of the drive came on a third-down gamble on the Edmonton 26, when Maas got the first down on a quarterback sneak.

On Calgary?s next possession, Joffrey Reynolds was stripped of the ball by Joe Montford, which was recovered by Tim Fleiszer. Four plays later, Maas threw a 25-yard pass to Jason Tucker on a corner route to give the Eskimos their first lead of the game.

Sandro DeAngelis kicked a 52-yard field goal with under three minutes remaining to give the Stampeders their initial points of the second half.

The Eskimos were stopped on second down with just over a minute remaining, but the Stampeders were called for too many men on the field, giving Edmonton a first down. On the next play, the Stampeders were penalized for a face mask, allowing the Eskimos to move further down the field and eat up more clock. Sean Fleming booted a 32-yard field goal to give the Eskimos a seven-point lead. Fleming was 6-of-6 on field goal attempts.

In the dying seconds of regulation, Calgary quarterback Henry Burris was intercepted by Kelly Wiltshire to secure the win for the Eskimos.

Calgary took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a big play from Tony Stallings. Stallings, who replaced David Allen in the line-up after he joined the St. Louis Rams of the NFL this week, broke away from one tackle and burst 63 yards to the Edmonton three-yard line, setting up a first-and-goal. Two plays later, Burris scored on a quarterback sneak.

With Calgary driving towards the end zone on its first offensive series, Wiltshire picked off Burris in front of his goal line to end the scoring threat. The Eskimos conceded the safety after going two-and-out on offence.

At the end of the quarter the Eskimos forced another turnover as Terrence Wilkins was stripped of the ball on a punt return by Glen Young, recovered by Bertrand. This helped set up a 30-yard field goal by Fleming early in the second quarter. Fleming added another from 38 yards to narrow Edmonton?s deficit to 9-6.

Wilkins made up for his miscue returning the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the Edmonton 39. Reynolds ran 37 yards to set up his two-yard touchdown run.

Fleming was good on a 17-yard field goal. Then the Stampeders added another seven, with Burris scoring on another sneak. Fleming booted a 42-yard field goal to conclude the half.

On a second-and-short, the Stampeders opted to go for a pass rather than run for a first down. Burris made an incomplete pass and then was stopped short on a third down carry.

Maas replaced starter Ricky Ray at quarterback, and drove the Eskimos to another field goal opportunity. Fleming was good once again from 34 yards out.

Burris and Jeremaine Copeland hooked up for a 48-yard passing play which looked to put the Stampeders back in business. But Reynolds was stripped of the ball on the Edmonton 20, recovered by Keyuo Craver. Fleming punted into the end zone attempting to get inside the coffin corner, making it a 23-16 score.

Jason Maas put together the best drive I've ever seen by a CFL quarterback. Period. This team showed guts and etermination and Jason Maas was THE man. Everyone just remember - I told you so. I said Maas was the man, and he proved me right tonight.

That was a great game. I always love beating Calgary, especially at McMahon. And what a great way to do it. Edmonton got their asses handed to them last week and all the 'experts' had a CGY/BCL West Final already scheduled.

Awesome effort by the defence, forcing six turnovers. Jason Maas was a stud stepping in to pull the Eskimos out of a grave that they had dug after two quarters. How the hell did Burris get voted 'Warrior of the Game?' Anyways, we all know that the British Columbia Lions are right for the picking. Dun, dun, dun.

:D
