View Full Version : The Shoot Out

Couldn't find a thread on this subject, so I may as well post one. Are you guys liking the Shoot Out? From what I can see most don't. Some games should just end in a tie. Last night I watched the Rangers go into a SO with the Islanders. Great game, should have been a tie. But watching Jagr's stick break on his attempted shot, made me think that there will definitely be some controversy at some point about the SO. A divisional game, one point at steak, and it could be the difference between a PO birth or golf. I suppose the same could be said about OT - but at least the game is being won the way it's played. At least there won't be a SO in the playoffs, but I imagine that it will be scraped all together next year. But since we have to live with it now, in the wise words of Cowboy Sex kitten McGuire... "SHOOT THE PUCK!" And I agree, almost every SO shot that I've watched, the ones that seem to be most effective are the shots, not the deeks. You simple don't have the same ice and control after three hours of game time that you have in practice.
Perhaps they should loose the skaters and just have the goalies fire pucks across the ice from net to empty net until one misses. And instead of pucks they should use frozen chickens. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Being on the winning end of 2 shoot-outs, I have no problem with shoot-outs*
*Possible to change

yeah, I didn't really expect much support from any Sen fans, but let's here from some Pens fans.
I saw the Rangers / Isles game and Shootout (my first). Good game.
I didn't hate the shootout as much as I thought I would, but I still wasn't thrilled with the game ending that way. I know what you mean. You hear people say something along the lines of "both teams get a point so it doesn't hurt anybody to shoot-out for that extra point".
But the Islanders are division rivals. That meaningless point could be crucial in April. Exactly like you said.
Did I like watching it? Well yeah I guess, it's interesting. But it didn't sit well with me that the Islanders got an extra point in the standings for that. It doesn't really hit you until you sit down and watch a full game first, then watch it go to OT then Shootout. It just doesn't "feel" right. What else can I say. This is a team sport.

But you can look at it two ways
1 Hasek is just amazing one on one
2 Hasek will most likely eventually get hurt in a shootout
Who are these and what is these mysterious Pen fans you speak of

If any team should be thriving with the new shoot-outs, it should be Pittsburgh. I think once each team has one a couple and lost a coupe of shoot-outs, it won't be as big a deal to teams that are currently struggling.
Just my two cents..
I think games should be like soccer in Europe. 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss with no OT.

I like the 4 on 4 OT. I'd actually rather see two 5 minute OT's then the SO. 5 min. 4-on-4, and 5 min. 3-on-3 perhaps? The Point structure works for me though.

I don't mind it. Continuous OT would be my favourite but I guess that would make teams too fatigued.

I prefer continous OT
Shootout to settle a hard fought game, just doesn't seem right

They should really end the game in a 'hardest shot' contest.

Yeah why stop at shootouts. Have a full blown skills competition

That would be more appropriate. ;)
If given the choice between a game ending in a tie or a shootout to decide a winner, I'll take the latter anyday. I actually get excited and tune into games when I see they're tied in the third period. I don't think it's a big deal that three player and a goalie decide if a particular team wins or not. If teams are struggling with the shootout, then that will only encourage them more to win in regulation or the four-on-four shootout. That'll make for better hockey late in games.

Says the guy who's never played hockey ;).
The shootout sucks. It's stupid. I dispise it. I also hate the idea. that because I'll cheer/watch the outcome of the game, I love it. Argh. The idea of the shootout makes me too mad to tipe cohereantly as wel. Worts ikea evar.
I don't mind it. On the bright side it's better than a tie, is pretty exciting, and my Sens may be the best at it with Hasek in net and a wide variety of skilled forwards. On the other hand it puts the game in the hands of a select few players, is a horrible way to lose, and can seem like a gimick at times.

I think most long-time hockey fans dislike the shootout.
It's a way to bring new fans(read American) who for some reason do not like ties.
So in that way it could be better for the NHL.
Anything that puts more bums in the seats = good.
Now . . .where's that blue ice?

As a player I've been in my fair share of shoot-outs at tournaments. It's a fun and challanging time to stone some shooters for a couple of cases of beer.
As far as the shoot-outs go in the NHL when there are decisive points on the line - I think it's a bad idea. We're not talking beer, here - we're talking (possibly) the difference between a playoff berth or an early tee time.

Shootout's and beer??? We're talking hockey shootouts and not those good old western cowboy types, right? Because those can get pretty ugly... In some states they still have those old fashioned drunkin' showdowns to see who wins the cocktail waitress' hand in marriage.
