Daniel Craig, a blue-eyed and blond British actor, is the new James Bond.

Sony Pictures on Friday confirmed media reports that Craig will replace Pierce Brosnan as the suave British spy of the silver screen. (Watch video of new 007)

Craig's selection -- revealed by having the actor travel down the River Thames aboard a military boat, wearing Bond's trademark suit and dark glasses -- ends months of speculation over the role of agent 007.

Later, at a news conference in London, Craig appeared to be at a loss for words about his new job.

"It's something else, I can tell you, really," he said.

Craig added that his first reaction when told by producers was to say, "I need a drink."

Producers said last year that they were seeking a replacement for Pierce Brosnan, 52, who has played the suave British spy in the last four Bond films.

Rumored to have also been in the running were British actors Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler and Ewan McGregor. Irishman Colin Farrell and Australians Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana were also mentioned.

But after all the guessing, it was Craig's mother that let the cat out of the bag.

"Obviously we are thrilled to bits," his mother Carol told the Liverpool Daily Post newspaper on Thursday.

"It has come at a very good time in his career. He has worked extremely hard all his life and this would be his biggest populist role," she was quoted as saying. "It will be life-changing".

Craig, 37, appeared in the 1990s TV drama "Our Friends in the North" and in such films as "The Mother," "Enduring Love" and "Layer Cake."

He also played Paul Newman's son in "Road to Perdition," was poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow's Sylvia Plath in "Sylvia" and appeared in this year's thriller "The Jacket" with Adrien Brody.

Craig's personal life has also been a source of media attention.

He has dated model Kate Moss and has been linked to Sienna Miller, his "Layer Cake" co-star and on-off fiancee of Jude Law.

Craig will appear in the 21st Bond film, a remake of "Casino Royale," which is due to be released next year.

"Casino Royale," published in 1953, was Ian Fleming's first Bond novel. The 1967 film version was a spoof starring Peter Sellers, and it was one of the few Bond adventures not to feature any MI6 gadgets

When Brosnan took over..I wasn't impressed. He just isn't Bond. This is a good change, and will get the films back on track.

Very good choice. Craig is a very good actor, and should do well as Bond.

I think he is a good choice because he is more rugged looking than any of the others. I don't like "pretty boy" Bond's. My favourite by far was Connery.

I didn't realize that Craig will actually be the first English actor to play Bond. The rest have been either Scottish, Irish or I think George Lazenby was Australian.

Some info regarding Casino Royale.....

Quentin Tarantino expressed an interest in directing. He said at the Cannes film festival 2004 that he wanted to film "Casino Royale" properly - pretty much as Ian Fleming wrote it. He backed Pierce Brosnan for Bond and Uma Thurman as Bond Girl (presumably the tragic Vesper Lynd). He approached Eon Productions with his ideas, but they turned him down.

Taking James Bond back to one of his earlier missions may mean some key MI6 personnel are missing from the forthcoming film "Casino Royale" - the 21st in the series.

Producer Michael G. Wilson revealed that many old favourites won't appear. "We are planning on bringing M back," he said, "but as the script stands neither Q nor Moneypenny appear".

John Cleese has long been rumoured to be in and out of script revisions as Q.

Samantha Bond publicly stepped down as Miss Moneypenny when Pierce Brosnan was no longer in the running to play James Bond.

Dame Judi Dench is said to be contracted to play M in "Casino Royale" already.

I'm glad Tarantino didn't get to direct it. He wanted Brosnan. To be honest, I haven't followed Bond ever since he took the reigns.

Dalton was better than he was. So, for me..this is a breath of fresh air..and a return to old roots :D

Clive Owen was offered Bond, but turned it down. As I said, Craig will do well

I wouldn't want Tarantino to direct a Bond movie anyways. Bond movies are violent, but have never been violent to the point where Tarantino would take it. I liked Dalton as Bond too even though he played Bond for only two films. License to Kill was one of my favorite Bond films even though it is much malinged by people. I recall somebody saying that the way that Bond is portrayed by Dalton is the most similar to how Fleming portrayed the characters in the novel.

A Bond film without Moneypenny or Q. I couldn't think of it that way. Those two characters have been mainstays of the series since the beginning. But, if it would ensure that the plot of the film follows that of the original Fleming novel I could live with it.

Imagine if you will....

Q: How about if I'm "M"? That sounds good to me, I'll be "M".
Bond: You're not "M". Some guy on some other job is "M". You're "Q"!
006: Who cares what your name is?
Q: Yeah that's easy for you to say, you're 006, you have a cool sounding name. All right look if it's no big deal to be "Q", do you wanna trade?

Slappy, you should be writing the script for the next Bond film!

I've seen this dude before but I have to do some searching before I decide. Sean Connery is still the best bond IMO.

I've never heard of or seen Daniel Craig in a movie even if his last name is the greatest name ever spoken in the English language.:D

As for Timoth Dalton, he was slightly better than Brosnan but no one comes close to the greatest of all time, Sean Connery.

Too bad Sean Bean was the bad guy in a previous Bond movie, I think he should have been in the running.

Yeah, thats a big reason they chose Craig. He is an unknown to most North American audiences. This will benefit him.

Ofcourse Connery was the best, but Moore and Dalton were also decent. Moore was more humourous, as Dalton was more serious. Brosnan should have never been given the role, but thats just my opinion :D

Agreed on Sean Bean. He would have been a VERY good choice. Too bad he was 006 or something like that
