View Full Version : Playoff Talk: Angels vs White Sox (ALCS)
Let the controversy begin.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were out of the ninth inning with a strike out, but the umpires ruled that the pitch wasn't cleanly caught and A.J. Pierzynski alertly ran to first base. It was clear via reply that the Angels' catcher did catch the ball, so right now we should be in the tenth inning.
Instead the White Sox stole second, got a hit in the next at bat and won game two. Los Angeles of Anaheim is left stunned in their dugout, feeling robbed of a potential win and 2-0 series lead.
Chicago-South Side's Mark Buehrle was clearly the player of this game, who went nine innings, giving up only five hits and one earned run. This series is now tied 1-1.

Unbelievably bad call. What was going on in that umps head? A catcher would never fake that they caught a pitch cleanly if they didn't. Think about it, if they do trap it all they have to do is reach out and tag the batter anyway. Why risk it? Terrible on the umps part. That being said, I picked the Chi Sox so this doesn't really hurt me. :D

What gets me is the ump made the "you're out" sign twice.
Then had the gall to argue with Scioscia.
And not even go the third base ump until Scioscia came out of the dugout again.
Who knows if the Sox or the Angels would have won that game in extra innings, but the ump gave that game to the Sox in the 9th.
All that being said, I too have the Sox in 6.

Bad call, but the Angels catcher should have applied the tag in stead of just casusally rolling the ball back to the mound.
Didn't see it. But none the less it sounds like the Angels could have easily won the game.
I must say I'm very impressed with their efforts against Chicago thus far. I thought they'd get clobbered in game 1 after the torrid pace of no days off between game 4 (New York), game 5 (California) and game 1 (Chicago).
Definitely notable if you ask me. That's a lot of travelling.

Bad calls are part of the game. I'm sure somewhere down the line they've had one to help them out. In the grand scheme of things it all evens out. The fact is they lost the game after this blown call.
Now that thats out of the way, I think umpires( and refs for that matter) should be fined or something so they'll be more careful. Even better, the advantage of video replay when a coach challenges. The NFL has it, why doesn't other sports?
Bottom line, the series is tied.
Johnny, I somehow dont' think there was a call this important to their season that helped them out ;).
I'd like to see ref's have a camera on them. Lets get some accountability.

50 years ago it's possible.
I agree.

Just thought I'd add something in here. I just seen the replay and Pierzynksi(sp) started walking towards the dugout. Now, I don't know if this applies in the MLB but I'm an umpire and across Canada we use the same rules. If the catcher misses the ball(which he didn't, but stay with me here) on a strike three, the runner can go to first base if he makes it before the throw. BUT, if the runner starts toward the dugout, he is automatically out. So there's a second reason for Angel fans that he should have been out.

According to the official Canadian rules:
6.09
b)
When a batter becomes a base runner on a third strike not caught by the catcher and starts for the dugout, or his position, and then realizes his situation and attempts to reach first base, he is not out unless he or first base is tagged before he reaches first base. If, however, he actaully reaches the dugout or dugout steps, he may not then attempt to go to first base and shall be out.
Assuming the MLB rules are the same, the ump was right on that part.
That was an outstanding game five.
There were more close calls and ones that were reverded to get them correct, but at least the umpires did get things right tonight.
However that doesn't change the fact that the mistake in game two gave Chicago the momentum in the series to win four in a row and clinch the American League pennent for the first time since 1959. But the majority of the credit has to go to the White Sox' starting pitching. They pitched so well, the bullpen was only used for 2/3 of an inning in the last four games of the series.
Last year it was the Red Sox first World Series championship since 1918. This year will it be the White Sox first World Series championship since 1917? The Series gets started next Saturday from Comisky Park in the South Side of the Windy City.

The series had a lot of exciting baseball but the two major screwups by the umps gave me a sour taste about this series. Obviously, the called strike and then the player being safe on first was one of the screwups. But in game four, how about the Angels pitcher picking the White Sox player off on first and the replays clearing showing the first baseman putting the tag on the runner well before the runner got back to touch the base.
It would be interesting if there was instant replay for the umpires and the team managers got to ask for a ruling on 1 or 2 calls per game.
Other than that, I'm happy to see either of these teams in the World Series.

Congrats to the Chicago White Sox and you're right about the starting pitching, that was unbelievable to see the way they pitched and won games!Vladdy had an awful series for the Angels going something like 1-22 at bats, just awful and a big reason the Angels got knocked out.Go Chicago!
Cheers
