Lamps seals Lions victory
By Chris Hatherall at Old Trafford.
Wednesday, 12 October 2005.
Frank Lampard sent England into the World Cup on a high with a stunning volley that beat Poland and put the Three Lions top of their qualifying group.
Lampard thumped home the winner at Old Trafford after 81 minutes to beat the Poles 2-1 and hand the country a massive boost.
It means England go into Germany 2006 having finished top of European Qualifying Group 6 with 25 points, one ahead of Poland. But more importantly it sends out a message that Sven-Goran Eriksson's side are ready to take on the world.
If Lampard was the hero of the night, then Michael Owen deserves to be up there on the rostrum with him.
Roll on Germany 2006.

The pressure was on the team and specifically the coach and they came through with two wins in five days over Austria and Poland. England wins Group Six by one point over Poland and are off to the World Cup, without any more qualifying necessary. Time to breath a huge sigh of relief.
