The Calgary Flames have added a little toughness to the blueline

Veteran defenceman Bryan Marchment has agreed to a one year deal with the the Flames. He's expected to be in Calgary on Wednesday.

Marchment attended the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp last month as a free agent but was not offered a contract. He spent the 2003-04 hockey season with Colorado and San Jose, scoring two goals and 14 points and 141 penalty minutes.

Marchment, a first round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 1987, has also played for Chicago, Hartford, Edmonton and Tampa Bay.

Does this help or hurt two teams? Calgary and Toronto. Namely, if the vaunted Calagry defence is not as good as the preseason hype, will Marchment help stabilize them? AS he is now under contract to Calgary, the Leafs are going to suffer through the Berg- Belak combo for a while. Cherry in one of his more lucid memnts commented between games on Saturday night that the Leafs would not resign him late as that would mean Quinn and /or JFJ would have to admit they made a mistake and that would not happen. I guess my Colivaccio for Jovo rumour is now dead.

Clearly this puts the Flames over the top. They'll definitely win now with Marchment.
