View Full Version : GDT Thread - Edmonton vs Vancouver (10/08)
Waiting on lineups still; but this should be a barn burner. I'm excited, and there's a lot of storylines to follow in this game...
#1) How will Bertuzzi be treated by the Oiler faithful?
#2) Pronger versus Bertuzzi
#3) How will "the Juice" perform after not playing a single preseason game?
#4) Can the Oilers with the new additions of Peca and Pronger be able to beat the Nux?

Putting aside the rivalry, games between these two teams in the past 3 or 4 seasons have been very entertaining. Up tempo and a lot of action with very little of the clutch and grab slow down the game hockey of the pre lockout. Given that there are new rules that benefit the game played by both teams and that Edmonton is improved and that this is the first of 8 meetings it should be fun hockey.
If I had to take a stab at the Oilers roster tonight..
Smyth - Horcoff - Dvorak
Moreau/Torres - Peca - Hemsky
Moreau/Torres - Stoll - Pisani
Winchester - Reasoner - Laraque
Pronger - Staios
Smith - Semenov
Cross - Bergeron
Markkanen
Conklin
Don't hold me to it ;)
Rita, Ulanov and Harvey find the bench.
#1) How will Bertuzzi be treated by the Oiler faithful?Likely poorly.
#2) Pronger versus BertuzziSomething I've been thinking about all day.
#3) How will "the Juice" perform after not playing a single preseason game?I would prefer to have Conklin getting the start tonight, instead of Edmonton playing GBC (Goaltender by committee).
#4) Can the Oilers with the new additions of Peca and Pronger be able to beat the Nux?I think they just might hand Toronto West their first loss tonight.
:D
I really want to watch this game but I have to work so I'll only catch the first part of the 1st period. This is going to be one hell of a game.
Nucks 4 Oilers 3 in a nail biter.
First period is over, 1-1 tie after 20... few thoughts
#1) Oilers have absolutely DOMINATED faceoff's, I'm not sure if Vancouver has won a single draw.
#2) Ulanov is still stinking it up; fumbling with the puck nad generally looking very unsure of himself.
#3) Someone needs to remind this Vancouver team that the winter olympics are this year, not the summer, the speedo's are a bit unnecessary.
#4) Great hockey, it's been fun to watch.
#5) Markkanen has looked good.
#6) Naslund still has the best wrister in the league.
#7) I'm already sick of Hughson getting into a little story he knows about X Vancouver player every time he touches the puck.
#7) I'm already sick of Hughson getting into a little story he knows about X Vancouver player every time he touches the puck. Yeah, that's been a problem. I knew something like that was may be coming though. At least he hasn't showed too much bias towards the Canucks thusfar.
There were lots of good early saves by Jussi, which is a boast for the confidence to get right in there and stop some pucks. Also the shot blocks have been a huge key in the Oilers' end of the ice. The defence is really helping Markkanen out to cut down on the number of shots he's faced. Even Cory Cross has shown that he's useful for something.
The early goal was great to see again. Horcoff nets his third goal of the season already. I expect more than two goals will be scored in the second.
Faceoff's were 18-6 for the Oilers, with 15 blocked shots to boot.
Can someone explain the phantom call on Peca.. and then 5 minutes later we're breaking out and one of the Aliens trips an Oiler breaking out and there's no call? I swear every time we play the Canucks they've been tipped off with some of BC's "finest".
In fairness to Hughson he's been putting in an effort to be a professional. The same can't be said for Millen; who could care less and if he was employed by a real company would've been fired ages ago. "I thought Naslund would score." Of course you did, you're an idiot homer. Go die.
Oh, and Ulanov had 4 giveaways.
Smyth is done for the night with a knee problem.

What?
Miller is the farthest thing from a Canuck homer. He is a Calgary Homer, all the way to the bank.
I'm surprised he has anything nice to say about the Canucks, actually
I'm surprised he has anything nice to say about the Canucks, actuallyHe hasn't had anything nice to say about the Oilers either. Well except that "Pronger had good positioning," which was a very obvious conclusion.
Calgary > Vancouver > Edmonton must be the dweebs thought process.
Smyth has a strained MCL and is questionable for the upcoming roadtrip.
Thoughts..
#1) Carter is invisible.
#2) Jussi has me sold.
#3) The PK is looking great.
#4) 28 - 12 on faceoffs. That's 70%.
And on Millen.. again.. two beauties. First he says that Ohlund diving s a veteran play, then he follows it up with "breaking up that pass stops a sure goal." The puck was going to Naslund at the faceoff dot and Markkanen was already in position.
Almost forgot..
The PP is looking awesome (last one wasn't great, but ended well enough). Hemsky is shooting the puck, driving to the net and looking great again. Beauty.
Marty Reasoner was a monster killing off the first portion of the five-on-three. He has been all night on the other PKs as well.
The Oilers have to come out and not allow the Canucks to score on their power play chance early in the third. They must keep this momentum that Markkanen has help create.
Despite the less than expected low number of goals scored, this is an outstanding game. Very entertaining.
Anyone missing Cuthburt yet?
Anyone missing Cuthburt yet?
Almost as much as I'm missing Smyth.
Keep calling the :curse: penalties until Vancouver ties the game.
Why is it everytime the Oilers play the Canucks the reffing is absolutely horrendous? It got old a long time ago, and is going to cause me to break something.
#1) Laraque is hit extremely late by Cooke. No call. Laraque shoves him and gets a penalty.
#2) Horcoff's "hooking" penalty? He never touched him.
#3) Hemsky gets clotheslined. Legal hit these days I guess.
Someone want to explain to me why the puck can split in half and the whistle isn't blown? Of course 5 seconds later the Oilers have a penalty called against them.
I've never seen so many bad calls.
Last shift Vancouver had about 10 "holding" penalties behidn the net. I guess it's only a penalty if you're from Edmonton. Absolutely ridiculous.
I love Raffi Torres. Me too.
Is anyone surprised that Edmonton and Vancouver are providing brilliant theatre again?
Ohlund. Millen.
Here we go!
Before we win the shootout.. I hate them.
WHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Hate it deciding a game like this, love it for bringing such a thrill to so many people.
Markkenen, you are officially the Oilers' number one goalie. Go Jussi!
I'll take the point and the perfect start.. but I still hate them.

For the record I thought Edmonton played the better game tonight. The Canucks looked very flat at times, funny I didn't see the "new" trap tonight. Congratulations Oilers.

That's because it won't work against a team that doesn't suck ;)

have to love the fact that teams can come back, nobody heading for the exits early. Past few seasons a late lead was an almost dead certain fact. AS a hockey fan I like it, even if the Canucks lost.
Quote of the year from another fan...
Wouldn't have been a true Van-Edm game without a bunch of 5 on 3's for Van and going to OT.
That's from a Vancouver fan too.. I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry.

Bordering? I make Leafers look tame when we play the Canucks ;).
Pronger's not wearing any pants...

Some random thoughts on the game...
- The Oilers really got themselves into penalty trouble, and did well not to have it cost them too dearly. Referees won't be perfect, but I think that Edmonton mostly had the penalties coming, that were called on them, considering tha nature of the rule now.
- Markkanen looked very solid.
- The Smyth, Horcoff, Dvorak line looked decidedly ordinary after Smyth left the game. Not a knock on them, since Smyth is such a good player.
- Igor Ulanov looked pretty bad out there. Not even the skating or anything like, so much as the decisions he made with the puck. Should take the heat off most Oilers fans' obsession with Cory Cross.
- Torres (obviously) made the most of his chances, and scored a really nice one in the shootout.

Wow, you guys hate Cross too eh? It took us in Toronto; 2 and 1/2 years whining about the guy to get rid of him. I guess he just brings that out in people :thumb:
I managed to catch the last of ther 3rd, all of the OT and shootout and even though I missed the most of this game, I deem it the best game I've watched so far this season. Man I'm glad hockey is back. 7 more just like it to come :) Too bad neither of these teams have a maple leaf on the front of their jersey :( But good hockey is good hockey :)

He's been great, but the layoff combined with the new rules have destroyed him.
I agree with most of what Daryl said.. props to the first person to figure out what I disagreed with a tad ;).

What a game tonight. I love raffi torress as well I called his 20 goals last season, Im thinking he'll be getting them agian. This game shows that edm/van games are going to be intense from now on.
Reffing was soooo bad, i cant even describe it... They tried to even it up in the end sorta, they had some bad calls against vancover.
Hemskys goal was very nice, seriously I think this kid needs to shoot the puck way more...
Peca was great on face offs, which is absoulty crucial with the amount of pentalies we had.
Reasoner, unbelievable as well great on the PK. Hes prolly the reason (next to Jussi) that this game wasnt a blow out cause of all the penalties.
Jussi with tonights game have erased any doubts about him in my mind. Turning away bert and nassy is unbelievable with is first Shoot out.
Im not a big fan of this "crack down" on penalties. It takes away from the game IMO, I think its totally wacked when the refs determine whose going to win the game. Some of those calls where unreasonable, for almost both teams but more so for the Oilers.
Im totally looking forward to the meeting agianst these two agian. So far these games have been pretty exciting.
Great game Oilers.
I really like the crackdown on penalties. It makes for a much cleaner game. It's about time the refs did their job and not let infractions go by. Actually the refs don't determine the winner any more than they didi when they turned a blind eye to certain infractions.

No offence to your Leafs but if I compare the Habs/Leafs contest to the Oil/Nucks show I still think the Western teams ice a far more entertaining type of game.
Game observations:
It's only a couple games into the season but (so far) the Oil have shown that they can compete with Colorado and Vancouver. I can't wait to see the latest installment of the BoA.
The reffing for this game sucked if you are an Oil fan, but their PK was outstanding. Has Craig Simpson turned the corner?
Very impressed with Jussi between the pipes. He read the plays well.
Hughson was alright (somewhat of a Nuck homer...but to be expected) as a play-by-play announcer and I'd take him any day over that moron who called the Oil/Avs game last week for TSN.

The Oilers deserved to win that game although I wish it was a regulation or overtime win. I don't like shootouts, it's an individual effort in a team sport, doesn't work for me.
Edmonton was on fire from the beginning of the game while the Canucks came out flat. If Naslund didn't score, the Canucks wouldn't have been in the game at all.
There was no favouritism in the penalties; both teams deserved 90% of the calls and the other 10% were a mystery to me. I like the crackdown on penalties, it will improve the games once players start catching on. One thing I did see that alarmed me was Pronger was allowed to pull and tug players while the same action got other Oilers and Canucks penalties.
Juicy played very well and considering he had no game action in the preseason, it was amazing.
Kevin Lowe and his staff sure are smart cookies because Pronger was the best trade the Oilers have made in years. Pronger was everywhere and did a great job on the Canucks' top line. One thing Pronger needs to do is wear some longer pants, his current ones look like short shorts on him. :D
I'm not to happy about the rule about a player getting a penalty for putting the puck over the glass in their own end. I don't think Ohlund intended to do it near the end of regulation and it should be a judgement call by the refs on whether to give out a penalty.
I'm happy Hughson is announcing the Canucks games on CBC even if he is pro Canucks. Better him than Mark Lee. As for Millen; if anyone thinks Millen is pro Canuck, you need to give your head a shake because Millen will support whichever team is playing the Canucks, whether it is Edmonton, Colorado or a weaker opponent like Carolina. Hard to believe that Millen used to play in the NHL because he sucks at analysis.
Anyways, good game by the Oilers and by the next match, hopefully the Canucks will be firing on all cylinders and destroy the Oilers. :D

I'm not sold it was a good game by either team.
They need a shootout to solve it
Could have gone either way, but hats off to the Oilers snipers
