Sundin out indefinitely
TORONTO
One game into the season and the injury bug has already taken a bite out of the Maple Leafs top line, as both Mats Sundin and Jeff O'Neill received some bad news on Thursday.Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin has a fractured lower orbital bone and could be out four-to-six weeks after taking a puck in the face in Wednesday's season opener, the NHL team said Thursday.
Sundin lasted just seven minutes of the 4-3 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators when he was hit in the face by the puck. Sundin, who was not at practice Thursday, has an unfortunate track record with face injuries, suffering both cuts and dental damage in past incidents.
Sundin's injury was not the only bad news the Leafs received during Thursday's morning skate, newcomer Jeff O'Neill injured his shoulder in the third period of the loss to Ottawa when he fell into netminder Dominik Hasek. The extent of the injury is not known at this time but the Leafs' forward is questionable for Friday's skate.

That's bad news, but it's indefinately. That can be 3 months, it can be a week. It all depends. Sundin is usually a fast healer too. If the first game is any indication though, I think we can still play well without him.
The silver lining in this is that Wellwood could get his shot.

Too bad about Sundin. They cut to Quinn's post game press confernce, I half expected him to say it was an "upper body injury".

What we really need to do now is step it up, with Mats out our big free agents like Lindros, Allison and Czerkawski are going to have to pick up the slack. We also need to get production out of Antropov and Poni since if they are going to get a spot over Wellwood and Thomas, they have to be able to produce on a regular basis. And I do agree that if the Leafs call up anyone, they call up Wellwood and give him a chance to take a wing on a top line since now that a centre went down, our depth at centre is probably our best and we could always move an Antropov to centre and move Wellwood to the wing. I know it's only been 1 game, but we have to be able to tread water for a while until Mats comes back, cause if we fall too far behind early, it may not be likely to get back.
This is really irritating, 1 game and we already lost our best player :curse:

most of the talk amongst Leaf trashers has been about Lindros and Allison and how soon before they went down. It really was too bad about Mats.

The leafs always seem to step up when Mats goes down. Mccauley anyone? For some unknown reason, I'm not worried.. not drunk either.

Well I think the tally was 24 games in 11 years that Mats has missed, so you can imagine the omen we're getting from this. If you didn't think we were underdogs before, this gives us even more problems then we already had. It's alright though, it'll make it even more satisfying when we succeed under these circumstances :thumb: or even more heartbreaking if we stumble
If memeory serves, Hossa had his visor shattered last year when playing Toronto as an intentional shoot in from center ice caught him in the face. He left for the night and it kept him out of action for a few games aswell. It would have been much worse had he not been wearing the shield. The point is, that was CLEARLY and intentional attempt to injure Hossa. If Smolinski can aim that well why hasn't he shown us before? And he's not the type of guy to pull that stunt. Just by looking at the replay you know it was an accident on a routine dump-in.
Sundin is out "indefinatly" so that can be a wide range of time. I give it 3 weeks based on a guesstimate. John mentioned Toronto has typically been able to step up without their captain so this is nothing new. However, he has been Mr. Durable aswell during his time in T.O. This will likey be the first extended loss of Captain Mats.
Edit - 4 - 6 weeks as per TSN for Sundin. Could've been worse, but not the news Leaf fans were hoping for.

4-6 weeks with a fracture. I'll give Mats 3 and he'll be back.

Toronto is deep at centre ice, so losing Sundin for a short period shouldn't hurt the Leafs. It will also give the Leafs more of an opportunity to evaluate Wellwood. The Leafs will be fine, unless of course Lindros or Alison goes down :D

A year and half without hockey and 7 minutes in? CRACK! You gotta feel bad for the guy. Leafs have always performed well in Mat's absence, we?ll see how this crew does. Let?s see your stuff Wellwood. (I mean that in the manliest way possible)

Its hard to feel bad for Sundin when he's been in this position twice before and has come back with a visor only to take it back off again, its stupidity on Sundins part and hopefully this time he's smart enough to keep the visor on for good!
With Wellwood being called up he better get the chance to play so we can all see what he can do.
Get well and comeback soon Mats.......please!

From SN...
1:08 PM: O'Neill unlikely for Saturday
Jeff O'Neill spoke to Sportsnet and admitted the shoulder he hurt is the same one he had surgery on a year and a half ago. O'Neill held out hope he might still play Saturday but Quinn didn't feel there was much chance of that happening.
Just to add to what the Ferret said, Tie Domi was also weraring a red 'no-touch' jersey which means he could also be experiencing minor injury troubles. Although he likely would not have practiced if the injury were anything serious.
Apparently O'Neill suffered the injury late in the 3rd on openning night.

Well, maybe three times is a charm for the big Swede. He says that he's seriously thinking about it this time.
But, a darn visor would hide his pretty face...

That's a vicious site! I saw the picture in an article today and I was worried that's what he looked like on October 24 not October 7 or whenever.
