View Full Version : Who Will Not Make It Into The Playoffs?

With 7 games left, which one of these teams is not going to make the playoffs?
IMHO it will be the Red Sox, not only do they have a tough series against the Jay who have played great against them all year, but with the Indians and Yankees playing the Devil Rays and Orioles respectively, I think the Red Sox have an uphill climb to make the playoffs. And that final series against the Yanks, if it comes down to it, I think the Yankees are going to think back to last years playoffs and add that as fuel to beat the Red Sox at home and eliminate them if they are not already out.

The Red Sox are at home to the Yankees for the last three games.
And the Indians Play the White Sox for their last three.
The White Sox have three more wins than Bos or NY and yet are playing terrible. The Indians are 1/2 game up in the wild card, and 2.5 behind the CWS.
Who ever loses the NY/Bos series is most likely out. Hmmmmmmm
Go Sox!

The Yankees...G-D willing.
It's nearly impossible for Chicago to fall behind all 3 other teams at this point, pretty much guaranteeing them at least a wild card.
Cleveland and New York are both a shade hotter than Boston as of late. But this one's really down to the wire. Great finish !
Cleveland only holds a 1/2 game lead over both Boston and NY... If they slip up here in the final week, there is a chance that both Boston and NY could walk past them and both march into the post-season.
I only chose Boston cuz Im a Yankee fan... however I have no idea who will come up big. All I know is there is going to be some great action this week. Right now every inning, every pitch, every at-bat... has do-or-die implications.
The Yankees will play all seven remaining games on the road. The Red Sox will play all seven remaining games at home. Advantage: Boston. The Indians will win the wild card and the White Sox will hang on to their A.L. Central crown. So believe it or not, the New York Yankees will be the odd team out and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1995 (IIRC).

Sorry JR but you got the year wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Yankees
" The bad judgment and bad luck of the '80s and early '90s started to change when, while owner George Steinbrenner was under suspension, management was able to implement a coherent program without interference from above. Under general manager Gene Michael (later Bob Watson) and manager Buck Showalter, the club shifted its emphasis from buying talent to developing talent through its farm system and then holding onto it. The first significant sign of success came in 1994, when the Yankees had the best record in the American League when the season was cut short by the players' strike. A year later, the team gained the playoffs as the wild card and was eliminated only after a memorable series against the Seattle Mariners."
I remember Ken Griffey Jr, sprinting home with a huge grin to win that series. It was the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in October 1995. If it hadn't been for the strike in 1994 the WOrld Series that year would have most likely been my Montreal Expos vs the Yankees. Oh what might have been

The Yankees will not make it. I only say this because I have a bet that the Red Sox will make the playoffs and I got to go with the team that'll win me money.
I still have many (RedSox cheering) family members to torture, last year was a devestating setback :(
I mean life-long feelings of inadequacy and anxiety were washed away in a freakish comeback and even more freakinsh sweeping of the Cardinals.
I have much evil work to do.
Hahahhhah
Ahhhhh ahhaahahhahaha

The ChiSox will choke.
Sorry JR but you got the year wrong:I didn't remember correctly. So 1993 it is, since NYY has missed the playoffs. I forgot that 1995 was the year they introduced the great September race-maker, known as the wild card. Oh, and please quit whining about the Expos. It's lame.
The ChiSox will choke.
They might choke on the division title LFL.... but do you honestly think they will lose the division AND fall behind both NYY and BOS for the wild card?
I disagree, even if they are playing poorly as of late... they are mathematically quite close to a wild card spot. They would really have to tank here in the final week to miss the post season completely.
That would be a colossal failure though... considering the comfortable lead they enjoyed not very long ago... The fact that they even face the possibility of missing the playoffs at this point is more or less an embarassment. So I see where you're coming from.
I'm saying the Yankees won't make it but for once I'm actually hoping they make it and Boston doesn't!
Cheers

I'll be honest with you. I just don't like the ChiSox at all. They'll probably end up winning the Wild Card, but that's only because the Yanks and BoSox have to play this weekend.

Could 2005 Chicago White Sox = 1987 Toronto Blue Jays?
The '87 Jays had a collapse for the books. Up by 3 or 4 games with only 7 to go and they tanked and the Tigers took the pennant. Of course that was before the wildcard. I'm feeling old :(

"One of the most famous pennant races in history is that of 1951. The Dodgers held a 13 1/2 game lead over the Giants as late as August 11th, when their manager Charlie Dressen famously declared "The Giants is dead!" Led by rookie Willie Mays, however, the Giants charged through August and September to catch the Dodgers and the season ended with the two teams tied and the pennant to be decided by a 3 game playoff. The Giants won the first game, the Dodgers the second, and the tie-breaking playoff was won by the Giants with a dramatic ninth-inning home run by Bobby Thomson, a play known as the Shot Heard 'Round the World "

It was also chronicled in an episode of MASH. The Blue Jays 87 collapse was nothing compared to this one. The CHISOX just might surpass it.

Well, Hillenbrand isn't doing the Yanks any favors today, he's currently at 6 strikeouts today and counting... maybe he has a soft spot for his former team Boston :conspire:

I voted the Chisox. I happen to think the Yankees pitching is better than the Red Sox right now. But that is just my opinion and I have been wrong before.

Ohhhh... Bases loaded... Shea Hillenbrand up... 5-5 tie... 1 Out...What will he do???
He strikes out!!!!! Who'd a guessed it??? 7 Ks in one day, can anyone say pinch hitter.
The Red Sox won 5-2 tonight to tie the A.L. East with the Yankees again. Both teams are 94-66. So it comes down to the final two games of the season and the scenarios are simple. If the Red Sox win both games, they'll win the division. If the Yankees win both games, they'll win the division. If they split the next two games, they tie. Then it will depend if the Indians also have the same record. If that's the case, then New York and Boston will play again on Monday for the A.L. East with the loser playing Cleveland on Tuesday for the wild card. How exciting is this?

It's a great finish for sure! Cleveland hurt themselves yesterday by losing to a "nothing to play for" Chicago team, with most of the starters benched.
I read at MLB.com that Ozzie Guillen was catching criticism for resting his starters. That's a load of crap. He works for one team and he should always do what's in that team's best interest. He owes other teams nothing.
If NY won last night and today to clinch the AL East... I would fully expect Torre to rest most of the regulars tommorrow. Ditto Boston, except they didn't have a mathematical chance to clinch the division before Sunday.
The more things change, the more things stay the same.
With the Yankees' 8-4 win today, combined with the Indians choking for the second game in a row against the White Sox, New York has won the American League Eastern Division for the eighth year in a row. And the standings in the East are New York, Boston, Toronto, Baltimore and Tampa Bay again.
I have to tip my hat and give credit to the Yanks for making the significant comeback and winning the division. Good stuff from them.
Now it comes down to two games tommorow.
If Boston and Cleveland win, the Red Sox win the Wild Card.
If Cleveland wins and Boston loses, there will be a one game playoff on Monday at Fenway Park.

A playoff would be interesting. It might be the first time that a playoff has been needed to determine a Wild Card winner, but I may be wrong.
A playoff would be interesting. It might be the first time that a playoff has been needed to determine a Wild Card winner, but I may be wrong. It would be the first since 1999. The New York Mets played a one game playoff at Cincinatti against the Reds. The Mets won and advanced to the NLDS versus Arizona. They then beat the Diamondbacks with a walk-off pinch hit homerun by Todd Pratt. Then in the NLCS against Atlanta, Robin Ventura had that grand slam single that forced a sixth game. Oh, what an October that was, chalked full of Amazin' memories. :D

And the Yankees clinch the AL East today. Many people were considered crazy when they said the Yankees would win the division in June, but look who has the last laugh now.
Honestly, I really don't care about the AL race. I just hope the Astros lose tomorrow and the Phils win. Then we will have a one game playoff for the wildcard spot.

Apparently, the Yankees didn't know they could clinch the division with a win yesterday until just before the game started. (Jeter figured it out)
Likewise a lot of Boston players were caught off guard not realizing they couldn't win the division with a loss yesterday.
Nobody was talking about it and I sure wasn't aware. Strange finish indeed :conspire:
As for today, I'm curious to see if Torre will rest his veterans, or go all out for the win. Logic dictates he rests the workhorse starters... however I believe the Yankees do NOT want to meet the Red Sox again (assuming they both made it that far), so does Torre do everything he can to try and prevent Boston from getting the wild card? Or give guys the day off....
He already pulled Mussina for Jared Wright, which tells me he's resting guys.... but with very few exceptions, Mussina has been a bad luck charm this year. Of course Wright is no better. I expect the Sox to beat up on Wright.
