HALIFAX (CP) - Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers has been named captain of Canada's team for the world hockey championship for a fifth straight year. The 29-year-old winger from Banff, Alta., will play in his seventh consecutive world championship for Canada when the team opens the tournament in Austria on April 30 against Latvia.
Smyth is the all-time leader in games played by a Canadian at the world championship with 50. He took over the captaincy in 2001 when Mike Peca suffered a broken cheekbone and has worn the `C' ever since. Canada has won the last two world championships.
The assistant captains' roles will alternate between Ed Jovanovski of the Vancouver Canucks, Kris Draper of the Detroit Red Wings, Joe Thornton of the Boston Bruins and Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes. Doan and Thornton captain their respective NHL clubs.
