The new Nik Antropov: No more Mr. Nice Guy
Forward shows his nasty side at Leafs camp It's time Russian used that big body,

GM Ferguson says

SPORTS REPORTER

The whistle blew the play dead yesterday, but Nik Antropov still barged his way into the goal crease and straight-armed Bryan Marchment to the ice.

Andropov also toppled Dominic Noel, and later spark a melee after he collided with Ben Ondrus.

For Antropov, it was a sign of a bullish, edgy player to come.

"That's what I'm trying to do at training camp ? go to the net hard and stand in front of the goalie ... it starts here and I have to take it into (exhibition games)," said Antropov, who got a whack of a stick from Marchment.

An edgy Antropov, ready to cause a stir with his 6-foot-5, 228-pound body, is exactly what the Leafs have been waiting to see.

This is the lanky 25-year-old's fifth NHL season, but his career has been marred by injuries. As a result, the Russian has shown only flashes of the dominating power forward which the Leaf organization feels is there.

"That was encouraging," Leafs GM John Ferguson said about Antropov's newfound edginess. "His body is an asset and he used it to his advantage, and to our advantage.

"We are looking for him to be confident and to expect more from himself.

"We're looking for him to be more accountable and earn more important minutes in a game. He's got the skill and size to warrant that type of responsibility."

Antropov's aggressiveness might stem from what is new territory for him at a training camp: for the first time, he is skating alongside Mats Sundin to open camp.

It's a prestigious posting, and one that Antropov realizes is tied to great expectations.

"I feel like Pat (coach Quinn) and John (Ferguson) are maybe giving me a bit of credit, putting me on the top line to see if I can keep up with these players," said Antropov, whose other linemate is Darcy Tucker.

"With these players, it's my chance to step up."

The posting also reflects the fact the Leafs still have faith in him despite what has been, fairly or unfairly, criticism that he has underachieved so far in his career.

With two knee surgeries hindering his chance to reach the next level in his career, Antropov's best season was a 16-goal, 29-assist campaign in 2002-03. That production has fallen short compared with his contemporaries in his 1998 draft class ? Vincent Lecavalier, Alex Tanguay, Simon Gagne and Scott Gomez.

Now a father of two, Antropov accepted the Leafs' qualifying offer of $1.07 million (all figures U.S.) last month. The deal came after he seriously considered a higher-paying job with a Russian team. Before the ill-fated 2004-05 season, Antropov received $1.325 million, avoiding arbitration. His latest contract, essentially a pay cut under the new collective bargaining agreement, is also far below what his 1998 first-round classmen are currently earning. Lecavalier leads that parade with $6 million. Tanguay follows at $3.2 million, while Gomez is at $2.2 million and Gagne pockets $2 million.

Antropov returned to Toronto in April after spending the lockout in Russia where he played for Kazan Ak-Bars and Yoroslavl Lokomotiv.

Back home, he immediately hooked up again with Dennis Lindsay, a personal trainer he's known for five years.

Antropov says he's worked his way back to the weight he had carried in the last NHL season.

The difference, if his play yesterday means anything, is that he'll start to throw it around.

Be afraid, very afraid. I wonder if he's up to the level of Tomas Kaberle's physicality?

What's with all these 'Born Again' Leaf players?
Yesterday there was some nonsense about how Tucker is 'Turning a new Leaf and becoming a different player', now this. You know you're a lunch-pailer when..

Oh, he's going to play more physical? When have I heard that before? Oh ya, about this time of year for the last four years.

Tucker didn't say he's going to become a new player, but he wants people to recognize that the common beleif about him isn't all that he is.

As for Antropov, he had a good year in Europe last season and he's hitting everything that moves in this camp. He's impressed Quinn enough to put him on the top line tonight vs the Sens. Before we jump to conclusions actually take a look at whats going on here. Antropov may not score a lot, but if he can become a physical factor he could be one intimidating player.

Will Krusty arrive at center ice in an austin mini and exit the car with the rest of the team?

Hour and a half to go :) :thumb:

Krusty will be there but in disguise. He still looks and acts like a clown, but he goes by the name Alfredsson. He just scored the @#^%$.

I've always liked the chippyness that Antropov has displayed but the problem is that its always led to bad penalties and this is his major downfall, besides being injury prone. All the talent in the world but has to control himself on the ice and stop taking that stupid penalty that comes back to bite us in the butt!

Cheers

for a moment you sounded like a Canuck fan talking about Jarko Ruutu. except for the injury part.

I see this as a make or break year for Antropov, he needs to stay healthy and thus prove he is worht the patience shown him by Quinn and co.

Joke if you will guys, but Antropov sounded (and apparently looked ) very good out there. And I'm a Sens fan who is quite low on the boy By far Toronto's best forward from the sounds of it, picking up the slack for a fairly invisible Sundin (I rarely heard his name. Missed on a great chance Steen gave him). A new Antropov? It's only the pre-season, but we shall see. I can't see a more physical player being in the cards, but quite posibly a more productive one.

Toronto's answer for Daniel Cleary..

Wasn't Antropov turning the corner last preseason? And the preseason before that? And.. well; you get the idea :)

I remember when Cleary was the next Joe Sakic with better playmaking skills. Then I saw him play a regular season game

Antropov is different from Cleary, way different. Cleary just never gave his full effort. He liked his life as a millionaire, if you catch my drift.

I agree! This is the make or break year for Antropov because he's under a 1 yr deal for $1 mil so he better come through or else he's gone!

Jarko Ruutu takes some bad penalties too but he's one of only a few pests that stands up for himself and thats why I love the guy! :D

Cheers

That'd be Anson Carter.

Cleary never showed the talent at the NHL level.. simply wasn't good enough to be as good as he was against mediocre players. Cleary is literally a Mr. September. It wasn't for lack of effort that he didn't get results - MacT loved him because of his effort.. it was the talent/understanding of the game at an elite level.

Cleary was born in the same hospital I was born in. He's from my hometown and where I reside now. The people here, and I'm being honest, don't like him. Why? Because he's a superstar, in his eyes. We hear the scouts all the time, he doesn't put up the effort. He only puts up the effort when he isn't challenged. He was finally challenged in the NHL and he gave up. He took his fat paycheques, built his mother a house and then went partying. Including a drunking and driving incident here. Could you provide a link that says MacT loved him because of his effort? I'm not discrediting you I just really want to see that, because it'd be the first time any scout/coach ever said anything about that. It's always been about his lack of effort. We all know he has the talent, just not the drive.

Antropov has the drive, it's just that his skills were extremely raw. He had a year in europe last season and is now having a good camp. An indication that his skills are finally developing/broadening.

I'm out tonight, but I'll find some gems a bit later. MacT was one of the few guys in the city who just refused to give up on the kid though.
