This somewhat old news, but I haven't seen it posted anywhere.

Quinn has said during the first week of training camp that there are two spots on the defense left to win. McCabe, Kaberle, Klee, Khavanov, and Berg look like they're guaranteed the first five spots. Marchment, Belak, Brown, Kronwall, and Coliacovo are all in the running for the last two weeks. I think the 6th spot should go to a youngster. Coliacovo has been in the AHL for a few years now and most Leaf fans think he's ready. He's worked hard on conditioning, and he's put on some weight since getting drafted. He skates well and could be a good offensive dman in the NHL. Kronwall has really turned some eyes since coming over to North America for the rookie camp. The brother of Detroit's Niklas Kronwall has been pretty physical wearing the blue and white, and during the rookie tourney even chipped in with a few points. Kronwall's ceiling is a lot lower than Coliacovo's, but he's a defensive dman, that brings size and physical play to the team. That's a bigger need for the Leafs than the offense Carlo would bring. Right now it's pretty close between the two, but I'll go out on a limb and Kronwall wins the job. Although I hope we eventually rid ourselves of Berg so both of our young dmen can get a regular shift in the NHL. The vets will battle it out for the 7th spot on the defense. Belak will probably get the job, but I wouldn't be disappointed if it was Marchment who won it instead. Brown will play for the Marlies this season.

Thoughts?

This Kronwall guy has been getting some good reviews. Colaiacovo is still too offensive oriented for Quinn. Coach Pat likes his Vets look for Marchment or Brown to fill the 7 spot. Belak has gotten most if not all of his Ice-time playing forward the last two seasons, so I don't see that changing. But who knows what Quinn will do?

Carlo and Belak. Belak has a one way deal as far as I know. I'd like to give Kronvall top line minutes in the A first. If he just dominates, then we're obliged to bring em up.
