View Full Version : Preseason Game 1: Sens vs Leafs

Firstly, is it on TV? Should be a little more intense than your normal pre-season game based on the love these teams have for each other. It's been a hell of a long time since I've been able to say this but...
GO http://www.uic.nnov.ru/~rysv1/images/teams/teamlogos/small/logo-senators.gif GO!!
Sens - 99
Leafs - 0
:boogie:
I don't think it's available other than on Leafs TV. But highlights will definatly be on air.
No score predictions out of me. These games are meaningless, just to see how people perform, and often times you'll see some crazy or totally unexpected scores.

I think I can find a very illegal internet feed of the game, I'll let you know.. lol.
Please do. :)
Per the Ottawa Sun:
Sens will start Ray Emery. Hasek won't get a start until next Sunday and during that time will be preparing extensively. He will then get a couple of starts in a row but come out half way through the the game, and then play a full 60 minutes in his next few appearances. Ease him into a full-work load. Sounds fine.

It's free for the first two months of subscription to Digital Cable I think M. I had to get Digital so I can get the CI package for all the Sens games. Holy Mackinaw!
50 cents a month, ohhh the humanity!! ;)
The Sens lineup (from the Ottawa Sun):
Havlat - Smolinski - Alfredsson
Heatley - Spezza - Bochenski
Schaefer - Fisher - Neil
McGratton - Vermette - Varada
Redden - Volchenkov

Who are the Leafs icing John?
No clue. I'm still trying to figure it out. Rumor has it that the big guns like Sundin, Allison, Lindros, Mccabe, Czerkawski, O'niell and Belfour will all play. Also Steen, Colaiocovo and Kronwall should play also. That's just hearsay though.
Since I don't know the leaf's roster, this prediction is a complete guess. The preseason has been a high scoring affair and who knows what can happen in this game.
My prediction- 6-3 Leafs.
Via a poster at another board (claims he this heard on the readio. As Leafs mod I believe him).
Most of the Leafs regulars will be in. Allison and Tucker are the exceptions up front. A couple of new faces will be out there, most notably Steen Kronvall and Hoffman. Tellqvist will start and be backed up by Aubin.
On the whole, both teams will be icing their full roster.

Leafs Lineup:
Antropov-Sundin-Steen
Poni-Lindros-O'Neill
Kilger-Stajan-Czer
Hoffman-Wilm-Domi
I haven't heard anything about the D pairing, but it looks like Kabs and Brown are out, while Carlo, Kronwall, and Marchment are in. So the starting six should be:
McCabe
Khavanov
Berg
Kronwall
Marchment
Coliacovo
The Leafs will probably lose, but I look forward to hearing about how Steen, Coliacovo and Kronwall do. Also, there's been much speculation that tough guys McGratton and Hoffman will drop the gloves tonight. Wouldn't surprise me since both are trying to win a 4th line job on their teams.

Right you are. He'll be ready for Oct. 5 though.
This just in, Aubin will start. Tellqvist will be the backup. The guys on the TEAM say he's played better in camp thus far. Should be interesting. Up until now everyone thought Telly was going to start.
Need hockey.
Must find bar with game on.
Seriously it should be such a great game even though it's only pre-season. I wonder why TSN, Sportsnet, RDS etc don't show pre-season games ? I mean it would bring a lot more viewers than the great Philly vs. Florida baseball game we get on Sportsnet East.

Now a part of me wants Ottawa to bombard Aubin with goals, so Telly will get the spot.

Seriously. The lockout, the changes made to the team, the rivalry. I don't know if it warrants a 2 hour pre-game, but there hasn't been this much hype about a new Sens season for a long time. Maybe since we got the team. I'm surprised there isn't more coverage of the pre-season games.
Luckily, our next pre-season game against the Leafs will be on Rogers 22, while SN will pick up the Pittsburgh/Ottawa contest when we get to see Crosby. So there is some coverage out there.

No, A-Channel is 06 here. The channel that shows all the 67's games. Do you guys get that just across the river? Maybe not with the Olympique in town....
I have no freakin' clue what the channel is actually called but it's name as to my knowledge is Rodgers....
John probably has the A-Channel as that's Canada-wide. But it won't be showing any Sens games because there are a whole bunch of different branches. A-Channel is different in Calgary than in Ottawa for example.
I doubt it, because I have that channel. Probably what he means is one of those local channels.
A-Channel is The New Ro I doubt you have that in NFLD it's a local Ottawa channel ;)

We get Canal Vox that shows a couple of Olympiques games and it's channel 22 here too but when there's no hockey on it's just a boring channel with local announcements. I'll check if the game's on but I doubt :(
Lol, seems like the Gatineau version of Rogers. If it's not showing OHL hockey / Senators OT / Renegades Vibe it's just crap. We also get a whole bunch of Lynx games there too but who cares about those. :D
Check the link I posted above, hopefully you get that station.
Lol I'll check that out but I doubt we'll have Rogers television since cable is Videotron here :curse:
Staff from the TEAM report Tellqvist will indeed start, after claiming it would be Aubin. They say it comes as a surprise. I don't know about you guys, but it was a surprise for me when I heard he wasn't starting.
Game is underway. One good scoring chance for Ottawa already from Spezza to Heatley. Belak takes down Havlat and it's Ottawa to the PP early on.
PP over. McGratton vs. Belak. Gratts knocks off Belaks helmet with a nice hit. Belak returns with just as much power and aim. McGratton throws three big rights, Belak replies with two big lefts. Dean Brown is Sen bias so take it for what it was worth, McGratton could've had the piss beaten out of him for all I know.
Telly giving up some rebounds early.
Phillips takes down Lindros for a Leafs PP. Leafs take advantage. APPARENTLY a lucky bounce, but again this crew is bias. They claim the puck strangely bounced off the boards and right onto Antropov's stick in front of the net. There was a U2 concert last night in TO so maybe the ice is bad or something, contributing to that "lucky bounce".
Stajan "chops" Varada's stick in half". Sens to the PP. Penalty to Chara while on the man advantage. 4 on 4 then Leafs to PP. Nothing comes of it.

Pilar. ;) Just how lucky was that bounce Dev? I need credible sources.
Leafs to the PP, Spezza for the hold. Patience is a virtue. But with no video feed, it's quite boring having the play interupted so often with all this crackdown business. For the greater good.....
PK is sucessful. Puck in the leafs end. Chara takes 3 big shots, one hits Marchment and he hobles to the bench after being slow to get up. Looks hurt. Facot or wishful thinking by Dean Brown I'll never know. The other shot hits Smolinski but he's fine. Finally it gets through but Telly takes it in the chest and covers up. Vermette off for hooking. Marchment to the dressing room so I guess he did get hurt. Czerkawski shoots, Emery makes a routing saves, cover the puck. Loose in front, Emery forced to make a much harder save than the the previous one. Puck is cleared and PP is over. Shots 10-5 for Ottawa and "the better of the scoring chances" (bias?).
Belak takes Neil down without the puck. PP for Ottawa (how many penalties is that now?). 2 on 1 Toronto SH from a blocked shot from McCabe. Poni fakes pass to Antropov, Phillips bites, partial 2 on 0 thanks to a nice shimmy and no chace for Razor. 2-0 Toronto after one period of play.

Spezza, scores. 2pp
2nd period is underway. Heatley lets loose a huge one-timer. Lindros literally dives in the way. It hits him in the head! He's down! Lol, just kidding, but nice shot block on a good hard shot. :thumb: Shot tipped in front and Tellqvist makes a very nice glove save. Czerkawski takes down Varada, Sens to the PP. 5 on 3. Belak shot the puck out, new rules apparently state defenseman will now get a penalty aswell just like the goalies. Redden shoots, big rebound by Tellqvist who's made some brilliant first saves but hasn't been able to stop those second chances from coming out (per Sens homer Dean Brown I must warn), Spezza scores!
Sens still on the PP for 90 seconds. Back to ES. Bochenski shoots a hard shot - nice quick pad save by Telly. Volchenkov flattens Steen (I heard no impact so probably exagerated unless in open ice), elbowing call and Sundin is pissed at the run Anton took at his fellow Swede. PP Toronto. Vermette coming in SH, Tellqvist with a big save (what's with Antoine one-on-one, he hasn't scored since camp opened and there've been plenty of shoot-out drills. Murray actually called him out a few days back). Back in the Ottawa zone, Sundin goes down and trips Redden in the process while falling to the ice. Penalty to Toronto, not really a good call as it was unintentional but everything is now by the book.
Sens will get a shortend PP now (Marchment back in the game now BTW). Chara with a huge shot from the point, big glove save by Telly. Volchenkov shoots, another big rebound but nobody finds it. Bochenski scores with a great shot! Dean Brown is going nuts and I can't help but get a little excited. Can't wait to see the replay on TSN and see if it lives up to the billing of the Sens' biggest cheerleader.
Way to stick up for Steen, Captain Sundin :) Nice elbow Volchenkov, bastid!!
Should there at least be intenet when a penalty is called....ah well even the refs need to bone up. :)

Bochenski. Goooooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Ward and Hoffman in a fight. One punch by Ward and Hoffman is down for the count. Apparently........ anyone actually see the fight? These type of things you kind of need the video for.
Alfredsson lets a huge one rip and it's in blowing right past Aubin. Don't know why they took Tellqvist out. Great first saves even if he's had trouble with rebounds. 3-2 Sens. Meszaros with a shot that's tipped by Bo in front, hits the post. Emery makes the easy save at the other end and the puck is frozen. Commentators showing huge bais now. "Score flatters the Leafs", "totally outplayed", "just look at the shots". We've dominated this period but the leafs did the 1st.
Leafs to the PP. Colaiacovo shoots, rebound and Czerkawski gets the rebound. Emery with a huge save. Now it's Ottawa's goalie needing to control his rebounds. Sundin with a shot nice blocker save by Emery. 7 second left in the PP and a faceoff to Emery's right. Bochenski is out of the box and on a break-away, big blocker save by Aubin and out into the mesh. Smoke to Alfredsson and big save by Aubin. Spezza shoots and another good save. Bochenski goes off for holding for a Leafs PP.
McCabe shoots save by Emery. Cleared out. Vermette dekes Mccabe SH shoots but Neil can burry rebound (Neil on PK?). Havlat is out there too, as is Alfredsson? Must be pre-season experiements going on...... penalty expires. Colaiacovo shoots, Emery the save, it's cleared and it's icing. That's the end of the 2nd period. 3-2 Ottawa.

3-2 Sens after 2. All Ottawa if you ask me. Pretty solid goaltending on both sides considering they are back ups. Heatley with his first point as a Sen. B-Bo looks like it's his 3rd year with the big boys. Ottawa's speed is starting to take over the game.
Love it

McGratton/Belak. Good tilt. I'd call it a draw.
Varada is out with a knee injury suffered early in the second and will not return. He'll be evaluated tomorrow. Man, if he's out for another season.......
Luckily, it's not the same knee as last year. He doesn't have a history with this one. Fingers crossed. It looked harmless but so did the incedent last campaigne.

They sound dominating. Both young guys have produced.
3rd period starts. Phillips to the box and the Leafs to the PP. O'Neill with a low shot, save by Emery and Chara clears it. Ponikarovski shoots from close range and a save by Emery. The Toronto PP is over. Now it's Ottawa's turn on the PP. Heatley shoots but it's wide. Alfredsson shoots but it's blocked by Marchement. Volchenkov shoots and it's blocked again by Marchement. He's been getting in the way of everything. Huge glove save by Aubin who just robs Dany Heatley! PP is over. The puck is turned over right in the slot by Ottawa - Cola steps into a slapshot - good save by Emery, positioned himself nicely so not much effort was needed. Action at the other end now, Redden shoots and Aubin will hold on with Neil in the slot. Tellqvist made the bigger saves but Aubin has been much more steady with no rebounds being allowed and making quite a few big stops himself.
Meszaros pinches in from the point, cuts toward the center of the ice after side-stepping a hit from Domi, blows a shot by Aubin five-hole! Domi gave up on the play once beaten to complain to the offcial. Literally. 4-2 Sens. 2 on 1 break for Ottawa. Smoke and Havlat show promise but they shoot right at Aubin. Toronto the other way with Steen. Weak shot on net and Emery makes the easy glove save. Neil clear the puck out of play and he'll go to the box for the same reason Belak did earlier. PP Leafs. Unfortunatly, the Leafs have 6 men on the ice to kill the advantage almost immediately. Heatley blows his second edge tonight - he may need new skates.
Lindros picks up a loose puck and a decent kick save is made by Emery. Ward blatantly trips Lindros and a PP goes to Toronto. No shots. Too many men on ice for TO again and the man advantage will be cut short. Ward is out and Sens get a short PP. Volchenkov shoots and the easy save is made by Aubin to end to Ottawa PP. Aubin goes to the bench for the extra attacker. Leafs call a time out. Leafs win the draw but it's Ottawa up ice. Vermette very unselfishly pases to Fisher and Fisher scores in the empty netter. 5-2 Ottawa.
A shoot-out will follow regardless of no tie being in place. :) Good because Emery needs practise one-on-one where he isn't particularly strong.
-Heatley skates in, glove save by Aubin.
-Sundin for Toronto. Top self shot to beat Emery (very similar to the one he scored in the blue and whtie game).
-Alfredsson goes in and Aubin makes the left pad save.
-Lindros scores on Emery. Very similar to the Sundin goal.
We'll need to work with Razor as far as shoot-outs go......

Definatly not his strong point so the Leafs have definatly scouted him. But his five-hole is supposed to be his real weakness, not his glove hand (though again, not his strong point).

Meszaros' goal sounded good too, but beating Dumi is no great feat.
It was a pretty nice goal, but Domi was busy doing something (yelling at a ref I think), when Mes got by him. It was a brutal move on Domi's part, and then Aubin should have made the stop.
Was an entertaining game at points, but the rules seem overly strict and I found the penalties as they were called broke up the flow more than it helped, but that's just my impression. At times the hockey was VERY fast and very exciting, and there were plenty of good chances.
Alfies slapshot goal was LUDICROUS. The water bottle looked like it launched 80 feet in the air.
Volchenkovs attempt at Steen was a bit of a head hunt and he would have really really hurt the kid had he connected. Wasn't too pleased about that.
Heatley was unimpressive at first but him and Spezza started to pick it up as the game got going. Overall, that will be a very nice twosome once they truly gel. From media reports I got the impression that they already had come together (those reports are false, they've got a fair bit to go but you can see the raw potential).
I finally got a glimpse as to why the hell you guys are such a big fan of Emery (the limited times I saw him he looked horrid). Very strong game for him.
Your usually stellar D outside of Mez and possibly Volchenkov looked very very flat. Perhaps it's because Redden/Chara/Phillips know DAMN well they'll be in the lineup (more than a few Leaf vets took the day off too). Whatever the reason, your top 3 appeared rusty/uninterested.
:D
Good stuff.
I would break out the Sens' jersey for tommorow, but the game doesn't mean sh!t, so I'll save it for October 6th.

Domi... idiotic. Aubin... I want to obliterate him. The sens had the legs on the leafs. The leafs had a few opportunities to tie it up but couldn't capitalize, and then the sens ran with it. The leafs seemed to lax a bit when they were up those 2 goals.
Just saw the highlowlights...
19,000? Leadoff TSN story on a Sunday? I've never seen such an interest in a pre-season game. Should be a great winter in Ontario.
Scotty Bowman is right... Alfredssson does have the best one-timer in the NHL.

Allison was injured... Belfour wasn't in net... the ice was chippy...ummmm... the refs totally had it in for the Leafs last night. =]
No, no, it was a good game. Spezza and Fisher stood out the most for me even though I was trying to concentrate on the new Leaf faces. Telquvist had an impressive opening, Aubin did make a few good saves, but a rough start nevertheless. Knowing Quinn, Aubin will be the starter on Tuesday.
Pros: Rivalry hasn?t died one bit. Lindros still speaks English.
Cons: No red lines made me feel dizzy. $12 beers.

It was a pretty good game at times, but the penalties really did take away from the flow. It will take a while for both teams to get back into form because at times you could tell that some of these guys had been outta hockey for a year. As for a few observations:
For the Leafs: McCabe had 2 points which would've been good, if his mistake on the second Senator goal wasn't as glaring as it was. I know McCabe is a decent player, but he's got to really clamp down on defence, which means as a veteren and one of the team's top defenceman, he cannot hang rookies like Kronwall out to dry like he did. I like the two way game Steen brings to the table, problem is he has to work on his rushes, a couple of times the Leafs were moving into the zone with speed, and Steen pulled a Reichel and just threw the puck at the net, negating any kind of good scoring opportunity. Lindros and O'Neill both played mediocre games, but you could just see they really were trying to get adjusted to the new game and probably need a couple more games under their belt to get back into it.
For the Sens: Heatley and Spezza worked very well together, I think that pairing is a keeper. The Sens dominated the second period and if they can basically copy and paste that kind of performance offensively and defensively for most of the season, they will be a hard team to beat. A lot of two on ones and breakaways with nothing to show for really saved this game from a blowout, but if the Sens can capitalize on those kind of opportunities game in and game out, then I think they will be running up the score on most nights.
I think it's tough to determine flaws one game into preseason, but for some reason the Battle of Ontario manages to entertain no matter when they play and you will always get the jousting back and forth between the fans. So, I'll just finish by saying I am really looking forward to Oct. 5th, when the game is meaningful and the Sens and Leafs play their best players.

With regards to the penalties I feel that while the amount being handed out right now sees very ridiculous by the time October 5th rolls around it will have settled down. Like certain players the refs are also getting used to the new rules.
My advice to the Leafs: No more 5 on 3's against the Senators. Last year in Game 1 of the playoffs it killed them and yesterday night it killed them. Heard good things about Steen though it was hard to follow on the radio.
This Bochenski guy seems quite good. I never heard of him until a few days ago.
Did Tellqvist or Aubin let in most of the goals?

Anybody know if Heatly has ever played left wing? I always thought he was a right winger? How did he look on the left for his first game? Also any news on Varada, should we have him back by the playoffs =]

Max Heatley looked great on LW. That line of him Spezz and Bo was aces. Haven't heard anything on V but I also didn't notice he left the game either if you catch my drift.

Oh my %$#*. Varada hurt? What are we going to do? Maybe we can find an old boot or an injured rodent or something to play his position.

p.s. Yes I think I heard that Heatley is a Left Handed right winger.

Good to hear... How about Havlat on the left?
Buy any tickets this weekend? I'm so hyped about hockey and the Sens I bought 4 games Sat (Isl, TO, Pit and Tam). Usually I just buy them a few weeks in advanced when I have time to go but this year just seems different with all that's happened. I wonder how many games are almost or sold out?

I moved to Waterloo 2 weeks ago Maxy, so I'll be watching my Sens games on CI. Some friends from TO & I are going to Buffalo for a couple of Sens / Sabres games, and of course I'll come home in June for the SC parade...

She must have looked like this to drag you to Leaf land =]
But good for you bud... Let me know when the feeling of panic, entrapment and regret settles in so I can laugh at you

So basically, from what I gathered from the radio/reviews from you guys and others who saw the game for the Sens.
- Meszaros, Bochenksi, and Emery all looked solid when stacked up against NHL competition for the young guns.
- Heatley worked well on the LW and he and Spezza had some good chemistry.
- Volchenkov and Meszaros, the bigger question marks on our blueline in terms fo what role the could handle, were our two best dmen while some of the vets struggled.
- Varada is hurt (he will be out 6 weeks. Not good news, but he'll be back soon enough in the season and it is a knee which with he has no history unlike the other :relief )
- Fisher sounded really good hustling and creating some offensive chances. Alfredsson had a huge goal but wasn't overly effecting on the whole.
- Havlat seemed to show plenty of creativity on his new wing but couldn't execute many shots/passes which lead to some turnovers. Hopefully he sorts that out.
Overall, I'm happy. All the '?' who played were satisfying. Guys like Chara, Phillips, and Redden I'm not to worried about and our top line seems to be clicking. Bochenski and all. Phillips apparently really struggled unfortunatly. Usually quite strong defending 2-on-1, apparently he just hung Emery out to dry with his slow decision making. Goalie plays the shot, player plays the pass. Or it should be like that anyway......

Ward / Hoffman scrap. You just see the refs seperating them mostly but at the end of the clip you see Ward get that one shot in and Hoffman start to drop to the ice like a sack of potatoes. In his very limited ice-time, Ward seemed to play well. Nothing fancy, but he got the job done. A definate upgrade over Simpson if for nothing else than the fact he makes much less for the same role.
Your links are always cut Man.U

What do you mean by cut? Maybe I'me doing some wrong. Or is cut a cool, new term used among today's youth.
BTW, you have posted the exact same link as I. Of course, it leads to the same page. What is the difference?

.... am I going crazy or is there no difference..
All Leafers have to be a bit nuts to begin with ;) but I don't see the difference either.

Ah okay. I see know. Thanks man. :)

I thought going to Ottawa U would help with my english :(
Looks like McGrattan will start the year with the Sens. I hope Neil shows a bit more skill than just fighting and McGrattan takes on the enofrcer role. He's actually a decent hockey player.
Your English is, and always has been since I've known you, excellent. I just looked at both links which looked identical, clicked on them, and assumed they were the same because they went to the same page. I didn't actually try and download the file. It's I who needs work with the comprehension! :hammer2:
Here is the McGratton / Belak fight again. This one should work. Good on Gratts to hang tight (I'd call draw. Win for McGratton if I had a gun to my head and had to pick one) with a pretty solid NHL enforcer.

One thing that I really noticed was just how rough the game was. For a pre-season tilt, there was two real nasty attempts.
The first was by Volchenkov who missed Steen a bit then put out his elbow (I'll assume by accident since he's usually very clean). I'm not kidding when I'm saying it would have been an instant concussion had it hit squarely.
Marchment took a run at an Ottawa player with a huge hip check. I forget who it was aimed at, but I'll provide clips of both attempts once I get some crap worked out here. Either way, I can see Oct 5th, and later on being bloodsports if this was merely a pre-season tilt. The extra speed just sets people up for bigger hits.
