View Full Version : Fantasy roster and trade discussion
Here is a thread to compare / discuss fantasy rosters and moves regardless of league
Here is the roster from a team I auto-drafted last night - I'm pretty happy with the mix of scoring, grit and goal tending...
C P. Demitra (LA - C)
C S. Crosby (Pit - C)
LW K. Tkachuk (StL - LW)
LW B. Shanahan (Det - LW)
RW D. Heatley (Ott - RW)
RW T. Amonte (Cgy - RW)
D Z. Chara (Ott - D)
D S. Zubov (Dal - D)
D D. Hatcher (Phi - D)
D K. Klee (Tor - D)
BN J. Roenick (LA - C)
BN E. Cole (Car - LW)
BN J. Langenbrunner (NJ - RW)
G M. Brodeur (NJ - G)
G N. Khabibulin (Chi - G)
BN R. CechmanekNA (LA - G)
The first thing I want to do is dangle Roenick as trade bait. With the year off, I'm thinking at least a few casual fans will have forgotten that Roenick is highly likely to get injured and possibly even retire on any given night. I think I'd like to pursue Lidstrom for him, or some other marquee defensemen and dump Klee.
If I move Roenick for a defensemen, there are a handful of decent C's available off the wire. In no particular order...
Koivu, Langkow, Arnason, Bergeron, York, Cajanek, Lombardi, Peca, Cooke, Antropov, Zhamnov.
The other issue is that Cechmanek is listed as "NA" but Yahoo doesn't say why... anyone know what's going on with him?
Available Goalies that caught my eye...
Cujo, Fernandez, Boucher, Kolzig, Conklin. Opinions?
(edit: I should have also mentioned that this is a roto-league... so guys on the bench really are just backups. It's a different approach than head-to-head. As long as Crosby and Demitra are healthy for me, my 3rd Center won't see too many starts, another reason to move Roenick)

Your team looks pretty good but how many teams are in the league??? I drafted in a 16 team league and my team looks a lot weaker than yours. I actually have 2 of those centers you mentioned being FAs.
My team looks like....
C-Mats Sundin
C-Mike Peca
C-Tyler Arnason
LW-Ryan Smyth
LW-Simon Gagne
LW-Mark Bell
RW-Richard Zednik
RW-Niko Dimitrakos
RW-Justin Williams
D-Nick Boynton
D-Kim Johnnson
D-Joni Pitkanen
D-Derian Hatcher
D-Chris Chelios
G-Tomas Vokoun
Bench:
C-Eric Staal
RW-Jamie Langenbrunner
G-J.S. Giguere
G-Antero Niitymaki
I think my team looks alright but I've never played fantasy hockey before so I don't know. And I also had last pick so near the end I just started picking young talent and hoping they get better. Mainly Staal and Dimitrakos.
I'm in a 12 team league, so there's a lot more talent to go around... in a 16 team league, I would consider myself lucky to have both Vokoun and Giguere. I'll bet if you go on the wire, there are no starting goalies available, let alone good ones. I think Vokoun's gonna have a good year.
We both have Hatcher, he's another one I'm thinking of shopping around, due to the injury uncertainty, should he stay healthy he's pretty much of a fantasy monster. That's why he can probably be sold high here in the early going... whether or not it turns out to be a shrewd move remains to be seen, but he's on a surgically re-constructed knee... and he injured the other knee at team USA camp.

My team in a 12 team head-to-head league.. (autopicked draft)
C V. Lecavalier (TB - C)
C T. Ruutu (Chi - C)
LW S. Doan (Pho - LW)
LW S. Gagne (Phi - LW)
RW T. Bertuzzi (Van - RW)
RW D. Heatley (Ott - RW)
D N. Lidstrom (Det - D)
D Z. Chara (Ott - D)
D M. Zidlicky (Nsh - D)
D R. Hamrlik (Cgy - D)
BN T. Hunter (NYI - RW)
BN A. McCauley (SJ - C)
BN R. Whitney (Car - LW)
G R. Luongo (Fla - G)
G R. DiPietro (NYI - G)
BN M. Denis (Cls - G)
One possible move, maybe some input..
Somebody dropped Nick Boynton, though he isn't signed would it be worth the risk to drop Hamrlik for him?

Great D!
I would probably roll the dice on Boynton and drop Hamrlik, he is more or less replacable if Boynton doesn't work out. Definitely a step below the other three.
Boynton's upside potential is bright... physical guy, definitely gonna bring home the PIM and +/-.
Additionally, he might see some ice time with Brian Leetch who tends to make those around him better. Best case scenario, he gets paired with Leetch on a regular basis and even sees some regular power play time. If not, that's all right Boynton has been steadily improving each year.
Worst comes to worst and his contract dispute goes sour... you should have a fairly easy time finding a Hamrlik caliber d-man on the wire in a 12 team league. Or at least close enough stat-wise.

Nice line-up. Ruutu and Hamrlik are the only question marks IMO. I'd go with Boynton.
From Yahoo :curse:
Sep 16 Tkachuk failed a physical and was suspended Friday by the Blues, the Associated Press reports.
Recommendation: Kind of an odd thing, considering Tkachuk is one of the tougher players in the league and has had so much time off to rest and get healthy. General manager Larry Pleau did not elaborate on the status of Tkachuk, but said he was expected to return to the team. We'd still expect Tkachuk to be out there opening night, but stay tuned in case there are more serious issues here.
RE: Chechmanek I found this blurb online
Roman Cechmanek has signed with HC Karlovy Vary of the Czech Extraleague and his status for the upcoming season is extremely murky. He might play 50 games in North America or he might not play one.

I added Ruutu from waivers for Nieuwendyk... its possibly Nieuwendyk could have better numbers, but I'm counting on a breakout season from Ruutu, especially the way he finished the 03-04 season.

Does Ruutu or Arnason play center with Mark Bell??? You could see in my roster that I was kinda going for a double up sorta thing(like having a QB and #1 WR from the same team). I'm pretty sure Peca will play with Smyth, right PDO. And hopefully Staal will play with Williams, even though Staal is on my bench right now, he could still be an asset if it's like what I'm thinking.
LiaM, it's actually very much up in the air who Peca will play with as of right now, espeacilly with the kind of pressure Schremp is putting on the coaching staff. There's rumors swirling that management might force Horcoff to do the "tough minutes" deal again, possibly with Torres and Dvorak, and Peca could play some softies with Smyth and Hemsky. If that happens, anything less than 60 from Peca would shock me. It's looking like he'll get very little PP time regardless though; as guys ahead of him on that DC without doubt would be:
Pronger, Bergeron, Hemsky, Schremp, Stoll, Smyth.. so it's doubtful to see him on the top PP.

I like Nieuwendyk, and you will never appreciate his game until you see it regularly, but you never know when he will go down with injury.
Ruutu has potential, beware of the sophmore jinx.
C'mon, I know you clowns drafted last night!

Not exactly as strong as my team in the other league, a lot of question marks for me.

@scorp - Richards and Bergeron should give you some nice scoring up the middle but you need some more grit. Obviously Bert helps that a lot, but I think I would look to toughen up just a bit.
@MD - nice goal tending duo.. I like your chances with those two

An interesting mix of European, and young players for me:
That is a sweet line up. :thumb:
My lineup in our little fantasy league:
C: Roenick, Nieuwendyke, Bonk,
W (strength): Naslund, Havlat, Smyth, Doan, McEachern (bench)
D: Lidstrom, McCabe, Kaberle, Stuart, Slegr (bench)
G (weakness): Burke, Osgoode, Prusek (bench).
I'm happy with my center position. JR will center some very talented linemates in LA (it seems like it'll be a Frolov - Roenick - Demitra 1st line), Nieuwendyke is an alright 2nd pivot, and I think Bonk for all his frustration will perform fine as a 3rd liner both in Montreal and on my roster.
The wings are nuts. Naslund, Havlat, Smyth, and Doan may all very well get over a PPG. McEachern is perfectly fine to warm the bench and step in if injuries occur.
The defense is fine. Even if I have two Leafers. Lidstrom is money, I've stated before I think Kaberle will have a huge season, and McCabe for all his inconsistancy will put up his fair share of points. Slegr is an adequate bench guy.
Goaltending I'm not too happy with. Prusek is a backup, Osgoode will be a #1 who doesn't see full-time duty (ala Hasek), while Burke with his good potential being behind a strong Tampa team may also be a flop.
Will listen to offers for any player on the roster if interested. In return I'd like to shore up my netminding. A upgrade at C would also be alright.

Aebischer is available for a price. Namely a scoring defenseman, possibly a winger who's more a lock than one of my players, all of whom were drafted on some very high potential.
Well, Aebischer is gone. I've got some sick wings right now, and would listen to trades involving a scoring defenseman for one of them.

I originally wanted to reject the trade but clicked accept by mistake actually. Brian and I were going to get you guys to vote it down. But then I just decided to pull the trigger. I still like my wingers plenty and have a goalie I'm very confident can post the regular season statistics. Wouldn't want him starting in April, but that's pretty moot here.
I'm happy with the trade. A bit of a gamble but in an online fantasy game why not take a bunch of risks and flyers.
Here's my roster for my 2nd team for 2005... this league is really strange, there are 5 wings, five forwards and five utilities.... no spots designated for d-men and 15 skaters plus 2 goalies every day.
Since it's head to head, I opted to leave a Util spot empty and go with 3 GT's... but I'll really have to feel this out and see how it goes....

I would disagree because it depends on the scoring system. D-men generally pile up more PIM and would most likely have better +/- than the offensive forwards that completely ignore their side of the ice and would rather skate freely than be touched.

The only reason you would concern yourself with PIM and +/- is if the league were roto. In h2h you can give certain stats less attention and still be able to win week after week. Besides, Mel's goalies look alright. So if his league is going by base scoring he could probably win 6-4 or 7-3 consistently if he beefed up the forwards. You can still find PIM up front too.

I always get Chara and I'm always happy about it. He is a fantasy warrior, going by recent history he is good for 100+ PIM, +30ish give or take, and noticeable PP points. I understand that in this particular league, all forwards would be the way to go... But the wire pickings are mediocre. For instance I saw Parrish was available and Donovan to name a few, but I would not dump Chara for either of them... Mellanby on the other hand I may ditch for a guy off the wire. Raffi Torres is another one I have my eye on.

Very good looking squad there. Palffy has huge potential this year. Looks like he's going to skate regularly with Mario... should they both stay healthy - they will both remain in the top 5 NHL scorers, I'd bet my bottom dollar. But that's a big IF.

It took forever to draft a goalie for me, but asides from that.. holy domination.
Other teams have guys like Morrow and Niinimaa, Modano and Konowalchuk and Briseboise, Shanny and Roberts and Stuart, Rechhi and Walker and Sopel, Kovalchuk and Tkachuk and Boynton and Burke and Legace, Elias and Kalinin.. and then the other guy knew what he was doing ;)
Frolov and Hemsky are on waivers, and I donno who to drop for either guy. I just don't see either playing above Naslund, Gagne and Smyth or Hossa, Jagr and Heatley.. decisions
I should probally drop one of Pitkanen or Rafalski to pick up one of them just to keep them away from someone else.

I missed the draft, I thought it was the 3rd but it happened on the 2nd, so I got what I got.
One thing I am happy about is goal tending. I think Luongo is going to be among the league's best for individual stats such as SV and SV% but he might be lacking in the wins column, which is where Esche comes in. He usually piles up a lot of wins (although doesn't face too many shots, at least under the old rules).
Dipietro I just grabbed off the wire, he's no slouch.
I need a STARTING goalie, I'm willing to trade Souray.

I have Cam Ward, the starter for Carolina.. I may part with him for a price. .921 SV% after 2 games, including stopping Lemieux, Palffy and Crosby in the shootout.
I think you can sweat for a bit though.

I'd consider any of D. Sedin, Bell and Perezhogin.
Holy McCrackin M-Dizzle.... no offense intended but the best goalie in the history of web-based fantasy hockey is single-handedly destroying my rotisierrie team !!! He was my first pick!
Martin let up 5 goals on 19 shots against the lowly hurricanes, before he got the hook????
Similar shocking nums against the Rags last game. Oy Vay! What the heck is going on?
Should I try and sell Marty high to someone who believes it's just a poor start?
6-1 final. This is not meant to rub anything in or trash talk... I'm talking about real stats here. I think the loss of Stevens and Needs combined is going to take a huge toll on the Devs.
Yeah I know the devils beat the Rangers 500 out of 501 games since the mid-nineties. But what does it matter now?
I'm seriously thinking of bailing on Brodeur... I'll take anyone's 2 cents on this topic.........

I'd definatly consider trading for him. Depends on the asking price. Aebischer is my only starter and he hasn't been great either. I haven't won a goaltending category yet. Leading in two as of now, but after tonight I bet I'm swept there again. Last time I miss a fantasy draft. My goaltending is quite literally killing me.

I remember saying Marty would crash hard.

Thanks, the problem is for me to trade him... he's going to need to string together a few nice wins, perhaps a shutout or two to bring his stats back up close to his typical performance.
I want to move Amonte too, who's tradeable with 5 points through his first 6 games here.
I want another D-man, so I may try....
Brodeur and Amonte for Vokoun and Redden, but I'm afraid the kid won't bite unless Vokoun and Brodeur appear to start heading in the opposite directions for at least a few games.
Based on current stats, no one in their right mind would make that deal.
Vokun 4 wins, 2.20 GAA, .920 SV%
Brodeur 2 wins, 3.60 GAA, .884 SV%
Edit: I wound up going after Hasek / Timonen for Brodeur / Amonte. (Amonte is completely expendable on my team... I have no room for him). Just going by ranks, it looks like a sweet deal for the other guy, as long as he doesn't click to examine the stats.

Ok, I watched this guy during the Atlanta / Habs game the other night. He calls himself a 'hockey expert'. He does the big board for Yahoo, here's his current Top 50 (http://fantasysports.yahoo.com/analysis/news?slug=bf-bigboard-hockey&prov=yhoo&type=lgns&league=fantasy/nhl) as of October 14th. Is this guy on crank? During the Habs game is said that Boston, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Tampa where the Top 4 teams to beat in the East.

Mel, MOVE AMONTE. Trust me; I've watched the guy be invisible in 3 different games.
As far as Brodeur is concerned.. I swear the guy can do no wrong. It's like the media feels the need to make him a god because he was forgotten about in the late 90's. He's been average since then, and gets nothing but excuses made for him.

I'm not even going to get into this discussion again, but I will say this much. He has gotten off to a slow start, but with all honesty, the defense has been nonexistent in front of him this year. It's hard to stop the puck when you have players in your face, and your defense is standing around doing nothing.:curse:

No word yet. There must be someone in this league who wants Amonte. I'll trade him straight up for a D-man if I have to and keep Brodeur, hoping he and the Devs find their usual groove.
Keith Tkachuk is another bitter dissappointment so far, but I'm definitely not giving up on him. Even in an average year, he yields solid across-the-board fantasy stats.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but get rid of Brodeur as fast as you can Mel. The Devils are a sinking ship right now, Marty tweaked his knee last night, the defense is one of the worst in the league, and the offense isn't helping out at all. I swear if I have to watch Malakhov and McGillis skate around with their heads up their asses for much longer, I'm going to lose it. The Devils may not even make the playoffs, so I'd try to get as much for Brodeur as possible before they sink much further.
End of rant.:curse:

I can sympathize about Malakhov. He really is dead weight for the most part. I watched him nightly on the Rangers. I wasn't surprised at all when he got dumped in the Ranger fire sale. I was very surprised - even shocked - that Lou signed him for as much as he did. Malakhov as strong as he is (among the strongest guys in the league), and with his blistering slap shot... you wonder why he doesn't dominate more. He's very frustrating. He got involved in a multi-player brawl one time with the Rangers and I forget who it was... but he threw this guy around like a rag doll, Chara-style. He's got the tools, but he just seems asleep on his feet most of the time.
Unfortunately for the Devils, I fell that between the rule changes and irreplacable losses on defense, the franchise is ripe for some re-tooling.
As for Marty, I doubt I can trade him till he strings together a few wins and brings his numbers up. GAA is one thing, but his Save % is awful. It's too bad, I had Luongo ranked higher but the guy in front of me took him (1st overall).

Scott Niedermyer(sp) might be for sale. Make me an offer I can't refuse ;)
Well I guess Matt Romig did not appreciate my comments about him smoking crack... but he did finally move Broduer out of the #1 spot on his big board top 50 (http://fantasysports.yahoo.com/analysis/news?slug=bf-bigboard-hockey&prov=yhoo&type=lgns&league=fantasy/nhl).
I still maintain this fellow smokes crack. why?
According to STANDARD Yahoo statistics, i.e. the stats you use if you just join a default public league at Yahoo.com... Pavol Demitra is currently ranked #2 in the NHL behind Jagr. But he is nowhere to be found in Romig's list. he is not even on the bubble!!!! Ditto Eric Stall, who is ranked 7th in the (fantasy) NHL with 9 goals and 13 asssists.
Zetterberg is on the bubble... well that's a relief. He's ranks 6th in the NHL statistically.
So who's in the top 50? Mats Sundin :conspire: Rick Nash :conspire: How about some guys who are playing?
Rob Blake with a minus -6? :conspire:
The number one fantasy commodity in the NHL to date, Jaromir Jagr - sits at #9.
Help!!!
The Bulin wall has become the Bulin hole-in-the-wall! I need to get rid of this guy fast. 4.10 GAA, .843 S%....
Should I roll the dice on Mike Dunham? 2.33 GAA, and .912 S% - I know he won't get that many wins, but he only has one less than Khabibulin.
I watched some of the game last night and he looked sharp, he should have won the game, the only guy that beat him on the shootout was Ovechkin and you can hardly blame him for that, the kid's moves are unbelievable! (check the game recaps for Ovechkin's shootout goal last night if you missed it).
But that was all Dunham let up, meanwhile Both Kovalchuk and Hossa whiffed, missing the net on Kolzig. If his team ever gets his act together, picking up Dunham now could turn out to be a shrewd move.
I do remember when the Rangers traded for him in 02-03 to relieve 18 y.o. Danny Blackburn. He played extremely well, even though the Rangers missed the playoffs once again. He kept them in a lot of games they had no business being in late in the game, I remember specifically. In 03-04 I heard he came back too soon from injury and was not effective. So maybe he's back and he's a much better option than Bulin[?]
http://fantasysports.yahoo.com/analysis/news?slug=bf-bigboard-hockey&prov=yhoo&type=lgns&league=fantasy/nhl
Romig's big board... let's see where to start this week
Eric Stall is "on the bubble", nuff said
Bill Guerin, although dropping, is still in the top 40 while young producers like Crosby, Zetterberg, Staal and Ovechkin sit on the bubble.
Marian Hossa, #4 overall with only 5 goals (usually his dominating stat). That's ahead of a few other notables such as....
Heatly
Jagr
Spezza
Gagne
Alfredsson to name a few.
Martin Broduer still sits in the top 10. Horrible numbers and injured.
Nikolai Khabibulin is ranked higher than Manny Fernandez :conspire:

Holy strong team batman!... with a marquee lineup like that you should be on the fast track to the top 50 leader board. Don't forget your friends :)
Take a big name or 2 and trade yourself for a top-tier goalie.
I'd look to part with Pronger, Hossa, Crosby, Naslund or Smyth in no particular order. For any combination of those you should fetch at top 5-7 Goalie in return.
That leaves you with Spezza, Staal, Lecavalier, Jagr, Heatley, and Gagne up front... Probably about 5 of those are the hottest 6 fantasy forwards inthe league. (and Lecav is no slouch either).
Grab Visnovsky and ride his hot streak... or better yet, grab him and sell high for fantasy defensive pillars who are off to a slower start than him, such as Chara, Lidstrom or (to a lesser extent) Zubov. (Gonchar too if you think the Pens will eventually gel).
