Flyers forward Sami Kapanen will miss the next 10 weeks after injuring his right shoulder. Kapanen will have surgery next week to repair the shoulder. Below are comments from Flyers General Manager Bob Clarke as well as Kapanen.

Bob Clarke

?Sami last week had a collision with one of our players when they were fooling around. He hurt his shoulder and had an MRI performed on him yesterday. The results were that he?s got a slap tear, they call that, and a partial thickness tear of his rotator cuff. He?ll have surgery early next week, and will miss approximately 10 weeks from the date of surgery.

?Sami is going to see [Flyers team physician Dr. Peter DeLuca] this afternoon, and it looks like they?ll do it on Tuesday.?

Sami Kapanen

?I guess it was about three or four weeks back. I think I kind of fell down on my shoulder. I can?t even finger point any hits in the past, I don?t know how many weeks we?ve been skating. It?s been sore ever since then. I still have been able to do the scrimmages and all that, but I guess it?s time to fix it.?

On having the option to have the surgery:
?I think there?s a couple weeks now where we don?t play any regular season games, so it kind of shortens up the time you?re going to miss in the season. I think it?s better to fix it now than to try and play with a bad shoulder and get to the point where it needs to be fixed in the middle of the season and be in a bad spot going into the playoffs.?

On it being frustrating, after having missed last season:
?It?s not just that. I just got my knee fixed over the summer and I?ve been rehabbing almost two months with that. I finally, last month, have been feeling really good skating wise, and feel like I?m in good shape I?m just anxious to get back with the new signings and the new rules. Being away from the game for a year, adding all of those up and not being able to play in the next couple months is going to be hard.?

Hmmm...Forsberg, Hatcher, and Kapanen already hurt...and now they sign Brian Savage...sounds like not all is going to plan in Philly right now.:D

Then I guess you have nothing to worry about when we play you in the second game of the season.

My score prediction:

Flyers 4
Devils 2

Jeesh they're falling down like flies with Raid sprayed on them. How will these porcelan dolls react when they're actually playing competitive hockey?

The injury bug did move to Philly. About time it left Toronto.

Be patient my friend, based on our team, I wouldn't put it past the bug to come back and bite us when the time is most important. Like a few weeks before the playoffs and in the first round of the playoffs.

As for Kapanen, the signing of Savage softens the blow a bit, but i've got to wonder how much money Bobby Clarke is going to have in the tank come deadline time since he is spending a lot of it now, and most of the time, the cup isn't won until a few moves are made. If you ask me, Clarke is really getting his hands tied too early, especially if Forsberg goes down for longer than expected.

I just checked. The bug has reserved a flight for April 13, coming into Pearson. No departure date given.

I think Savage signed for the minimum. Plus, with Sami on the IR, his salary doesn't count towards the cap.

Well I figured it was the minimum, anything more would be overspending. Kapanen will also be off the IR eventually, then it will count and releasing someone then will also count towards your cap figure as well :coffee: .

I would love to get my hands on this CBA. The PA keeps saying they will have it soon, but its been awhile now. The NHL hasn't released sh!t. I want to know the details, especially pertaining to IR and replacement salary and how affects the cap, and what happens when a player comes off IR. I have to to assume that the replacment IE:Savage is on a 2 way contract. Need the CBA! Anyone seen it anywhere?

Well this is one thing Sami won't miss while he's out.
