Hatcher hampered by injury
September 8 @ 5:07 PM
Derian Hatcher's debut with the Philadelphia Flyers may be delayed. The monstrous defenceman injured his knee during action at Team USA's Olympic orientation camp in Colorado Springs and has returned to Philadelphia for further evaluation.
Sources tell Sportsnet the Flyers expect to know the extent of the injury and Hatcher's prognosis either late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

That's not good.

Hatcher's knee troubles' aren't new.

I knew he tore his ACL in Detroit, but I was under the impression he made a full recovery. Obviously not, so thus the "now has knee trouble" remark. Did he have a history before last season? You and PDO seem to think he did, so I think I'm in the wrong here. This knee business is (sort of) news to me! :hammer: :o

From 1995-96 through 1997-98, Hatcher was playing 60-70 games a season for the Stars, logging plenty of ice time and missing games only due to recurring knee problems.

I knew he tore his ACL in Detroit, but I was under the impression he made a full recovery. As someone who has had plenty of knee problems, I'm qualified to say that "full recovery" may mean full mobility once again but the knee is never the same as before the injury. The ACL can never be 100% after that.

Didn't take long for everyone to jump all over this. Funny there is no mention of what exactly is wrong. Let's see, he is already suspended for 3 games for elbowing Lombardi so he basically has a month to heal. First game he can play again is against Pittsburgh. I'm sure he can't wait to introduce Sidney Crosby into the NHL.

He has a month to heal from whatever it is. Rather it be now than in April.

Well as you pointed out no one know exactly knows whats wrong. Who's to say that he'd be back in a month anyways.

One Flyer limping before camp opens

By Tim Panaccio

Inquirer Staff Writer

Training camp officially opens Tuesday for the Flyers, yet they already have had one scare.

Defenseman Derian Hatcher returned to Philadelphia late Wednesday night from the U.S. team's Olympic training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., a day early after suffering a pulled hamstring and tweaking his left knee.

Hatcher underwent an MRI yesterday at Pennsylvania Hospital. Jim McCrossin, the Flyers' head trainer, said the club had not gotten the results.

"Derian didn't seem overly concerned," said assistant general manager Paul Holmgren, who returned yesterday from Colorado Springs, where he serves as assistant GM of the U.S. team.

The good news for Hatcher was that he tweaked his left knee and not his surgically repaired right knee. A torn right anterior cruciate ligament caused him to miss 64 games with Detroit in 2003-04. He signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Flyers as a free agent last month.

Teammates Robert Esche and Mike Knuble spoke to Hatcher on Wednesday and were convinced that he wasn't seriously injured.

"He was walking around Wednesday, so it didn't seem serious," Esche said.

The 33-year-old defenseman pulled a hamstring muscle and tweaked the knee Tuesday in practice when he was hooked from behind and fell awkwardly onto the ice. On Wednesday, Hatcher tried to skate and could not, ending his practice.

Trainers in Colorado suggested that he return to Philadelphia for follow-up care because the Flyers' camp will open in a few days.

Benefit-game tickets. Citing overwhelming demand, the Flyers said that tickets to the Flyers-Phantoms game to benefit the American Red Cross/Hurricane Katrina Disaster Fund will be available at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, Camden County. The limit is eight tickets per person. The game, scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at the Skate Zone, will be general-admission seating only. All tickets are $10.

Loose pucks. Goalie Antero Niittymaki and his wife, Miina, are the proud parents of a 7-pound, 15-ounce boy named Aatu who was born at Virtua West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees at 7 p.m. Wednesday. It's their first child... . So, what did defenseman Mike Rathje do during the lockout? He drove an 18-wheeler for his father's trucking company.

I?m a little curious in why Hatcher would be in US training camp? Doesn?t the US have a pretty good core of young defensemen? I?m not convinced he?ll fail in the NHL this year but with the big ice surface Hatcher surely wouldn?t be nearly as effective.

Well, I guess the people at USA hockey feel differently. I know most people here think their opinion is what is right but it's not. He is there because you are going to win with a bunch of young defensemen, you do need experience and size on the blueline.

Flyers forward Peter Forsberg and defenseman Derian Hatcher are both injured and will miss the beginning of training camp, according to Flyers General Manager Bob Clarke. Forsberg has an infected bursa in his right ankle and will have surgery on Monday, September 12, and will miss at least two weeks, while Hatcher has a sprain in his left knee and will miss at least three weeks.

Bob Clarke comments on the injuries to Derian Hatcher and Peter Forsberg:
?Hatcher got hurt at the U.S. Olympic Team?s training camp and there is not a whole lot anybody could do about that. He is suspended for the first three games of the NHL regular season. In all likelihood he won?t miss too many regular season games although he will miss all of training camp.

?If everything goes well with Forsberg the way the doctors have told us, he will get back in before training is over and be ready by the start of the season. Even though it is a little bit disappointing, it is something we can live with.?

Flyers Strength and Conditioning Coach Jim McCrossin comments on the injuries to Derian Hatcher and Peter Forsberg:

?Derian has a grade 2 posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sprain of his left knee. He was examined by our team physicians and it was determined that he will be out a minimum of three weeks. In lieu of that time, he started rehab today with me and he is doing fine. He will be fitted for a brace and as soon as we get him back on the ice-skating, condition-wise, we will do so.

?Peter has an infected bursa in his right ankle. We attempted to treat him with a course of antibiotics but that did not work. The medical staff has come to the conclusion that we are going to remove it. Peter will have surgery on Monday, September 12 to remove the bursa. He should be off the ice for a minimum of two weeks.?

I can live with it as well. It doesn't say April 9th or May 9th, it's September people. I'm not going to go into chicken little mode and yell the sky is falling.
Peter's deal is minor, precautionary deal. These guys are pros and will do fine when they return to the lineup.

Gagne - Carter - Knuble
Kapanen - Handzus - Radio
Stevenson - Primeau - Sim
Brashear - Sharp - Umberger

Johnsson -- Pitkanen
Desjardins -- Therien
Rathje -- Seidenberg

Freddy Meyer, Randy Jones extras

Esche
Niity

Works for me. Although my dream of a perfect preseason record are shot to hell. :curse: ;)

He's out 2-3 weeks I think.

Go figure, the two injury prone players the Flyers signed are already hurt, even though both injuries are relatively minor. Although they could use that time to "gel" with their teammates in training camp, so they might take a while to adjust to the Flyers sytem (Hatcher is probably already familiar with it).

I don't know, injuries to the ankles or knees could be opening a can of worms for later. Hasn't Forsberg had ankle issues in the past as well?

The injury is on Hatchers healthy knee. So he now has 2 wonky knees. Not a good start, but there is still plenty of time for it to heal. I'm not going to get up and dance, because if Leaf fans think our team is will go unchathed, had better check themselves into a mental ward. I'm not one to get too involved with other teams injuries because I would rather see my team face the best players and if they lose then at least we can say, we played their best and did the best we can. But if we win it takes away all doubt who the better team is.

This is the exact translation, a Swedish fan translated it.

Some quotes from Forsberg in swedish media today:

- I met with the doctors on friday morning and together we took the decision to remove the infected bursa.

- It feels good that it will be removed.

- According to the doctors, there is no risk that i will miss the opening game.

- The problem was caused by the skate sliding up and down the malleolus, that was caused the irritation. It's the inner malleolus on the right foot.

- I will be operated on monday, it will be two weeks until i can skate again. But my training this summer has been good so there won't be any problem getting back til the premiere.

Also said in this article is that it's the same foot that has troubled Forsberg since the 2004 world cup.

(he had to fly to Montreal to have special skates fitted in the week before the WC.)
