View Full Version : Babcock says the Raps have no chance

RAPTORS FANS may be shocked to learn that Rob Babcock does not see his team improving this season.

At least in terms of its won-loss record.

In a frank and rather stunning assessment, the Raptors general manager told the Toronto Sun yesterday he does not expect his club to improve on its 33-49 record from last season, given the influx of young players on the roster.

If that turns out to be the case, it's likely the club will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season and Raptors fans will no doubt be howling for Babcock's head on a platter.

But the second-year GM wasn't about to sugar-coat his thoughts on this year's squad, which will gather on Oct. 4 at Brock University in St. Catharines for training camp.

"There will be growing pains, no doubt about it," Babcock said. "Whether we win or lose more games than last year, I think if you look at us on paper, we probably will not win as many games as last year.

"We more or less have the same team back with the exception of Donyell Marshall, who was an integral part of our team last year. We're replacing him with rookies."

Marshall, who averaged 11.5 points and 6.6 rebounds off the bench last season, became a free agent and signed a four-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Raptors hope that first-round draft picks Charlie Villanueva and Joey Graham will pick up the slack, but Babcock understands that it will take time for the rookies to establish themselves as solid NBA players.

"We still have a long way to go, but we have the guys here now who see what the plan is, and they understand it," Babcock said. "They realize that there's no cutting corners, that it's going to be a lot of hard work, learning to play as a team, doing things the right way ... Our guys are starting to get that and things are turning around."

Babcock is optimistic that his rookies, Villanueva and Graham, together with young standouts Chris Bosh, Matt Bonner and Pape Sow, eventually will merge to become a championship-calibre team.

In the meantime, his most important job with training camp less than a month away is to find a competent point guard to back up Rafer Alston and NBA rookie Jose Calderon -- either via free agency or a trade. Babcock said that he is talking with several teams about a possible trade. He waved aside rumours of a possible trade with Minnesota involving veteran Jalen Rose.

I can't say I disagree with anything Babcock says, but I find it shocking that he would actually admit the team this year will be worse. Usually we're fed some BS so we'll at least have a false sense of hope going into the season. I just hope they're entertaining and lose a lot of their games 110-108.

Babcock's cry to the money bags. MLSE will be rolling in green profits this year, and I'm sure he feels that some of that excess should flow the way of the Raptor... But, he's right.

The Raps at times over the past few disappointing seasons have been 20 million over the cap. MLSE gives them more than enough money to fail.

True. But, not this year. I agree with him on the issue of not getting any better this year, not the part about needing more money. But, it's the only thing that will save him his job.

I actually find it refreshing that he decided not to colour coat it.

I agree that the best thing for him to do was this instead of trying to get people's hopes up, but basically he has given himself an excuse for failure. At the end of the season he can point to this as his way to get away with another losing season. I do realize this team was going to crash and burn, but show some sort of bright spot for the future. I think Babcock is trying to position the team to get a real high draft choice and after "Captain Clutches" ridiculous contract expires at the end of the year, have some money free to try to lure someone to the team. I'm really glad hockey is back... cause if I got stuck exclusively watching the Raptor circus for another year, I'd have to throw my television through the wall.

Wow, I can't believe that a GM or anyone actually affiliated with a team would say this about their team. But I would think that Raptors would have to get at least a couple more wins this season to justify the pick of Charlie Villanueva, when they already got Bosh. Oh well, I can't say that I am dissappointed to hear this, cause I'm a Sixers fan.

Wow, what a schmuck Babcock is. I hope he realizes that a good chunk of the problems are by his doing (with the exception of Alvin Williams' ridiculous contract). I guess I like him being brutally honest, but come on Mr. Babcock you've already pissed off half the Raptors fans anyways and now your alienating the other half with stupid comments such as this.

Babcock may be correct.

The Raptors lost to Tel Aviv tonight.
