View Full Version : Canucks Goaltending

The Canucks are close to becoming a contender, one that can go all the way.

There are some missing pieces, but some would say the largest is the goaltending.

Do you think the Canucks should go with Cloutier, and sign a decent backup..or do you think he should be replaced altogether?

Here are some realistic options

-Biron
This guy could be had, since Buffalo has alot of depth..not to mention the season Miller has had..and the potential Noronen has shown. So one of these guys must go. If he was had, it would most likely mean the end of Cloutier in Vancouver.

-Toskala
This guy could also be had. Burke was close to acquiring Kipper from SJ, before Cowtown got him. So, you never know. The Canucks could acquire him, and play him as backup to Cloutier..or try him..as a risk..as the Number one.

I don't get to see a lot of Nucks, being a left coast team.

But I've always like Cloutier (he started as Ranger backing up Mike Richter). I think he's pretty good.

Not happy with him?

Cloutier has done little to quieten his critics ( hello Gordfish ;) ) I am not sure that San Jose would be willing to part with Toskola, but if Nonis is going to make a change then this is the guy I like.

There has been much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth about Dan "Lenny" Cloutier in Canuckland for several years now. If we didn't have a goal tender controversy here in the past 10 years it just wouldn't be hockey talk.

Cloutier is a good goalie, but far from great... but not one to bring one team to the Cup. Having said that, teams have won with good goaltenders in the past. Osgood is one example. But more often than not, you need stellar performances by your goaltender to have a chance at the big dance.

Cloutier will stand on his head for almost the entire game, then let a weak one in, which will break the teams' momentum and confidence.

You hit the nail on the head.

True on all the facts mentioned

I also like Toskala. He has really good numbers, and I think could be a solid No.1 in the league. And like I said, if not..a solid backup

Some others could be

-Denis
-Kolzig
-Gerber

If Marc Denis was to be available, or Biron, I would jump at the occasion. Given the chance, they have everything to become great number ones in this league, especially on a strong and established team like the Canucks. And neither or them is too old!

*LMAO* This thread is too funny. The 'nucks a contender simply by replacing their netminder? Is this a west coast version of Leafitis? Cloutier and Salo are cut from the same cloth and we're talkin' about Tommy here...not Sammy. The 'nucks are only a few points better than the Oil and as of last season it was the Flames that had them in their rear view mirror and not the other way around.

Are you trying to get a rise out of me soldier? :violin:

Alright, so they are missing a few other pieces too. Like a second like scoring winger(Dumont), and a physical defenseman(Witt)

All in good time. I do remember though, one of the best Canuck memories to date..was Keane scoring those double goals to eliminate the Oil! ;)

We might be missing those pieces. Last playoffs, we lost by one goal in overtime to the Western conference champions who lost in the Stanley Cup finals by one game. Now sit back and think about it, we were missing Todd Bertuzzi out there after his accidental hit on some kid. And we were also missing our number one goalie. If Bertuzzi was there, we would have most likely beat the Flames, no?

I am not sure there are too many missing pieces for the Canucks to go deep into the playoffs next year. No one thought Mike Vernon or Chris Osgood could lead the Wings to the cup and they did it. Now we are not the same team as those late 90s Wings, but think about how close we came last year. We were not that far off.

Very true Bob. We did lose due to the fact we were without our starter, and without our best player. But then again we were missing other pieces too..

Cloutier played well, especially before his injury. Thats why I would like to see him given one more chance. BUT, I seriously think we need insurance. I'm not a fan of Auld, and would prefer a solid backup. Someone like Toskala would be perfect..or even Gerber..if he could be snatched away.

Anyway, he is solid..a good No.1 A goalie anyway. Not sure if I'd pin all the hopes on him..but he could be solid

I wonder if any Ottawa fans would care to add to these comments.
