Blueliner wants to return to Ottawa
By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa

Jason York wants to come home. The unrestricted free-agent defenceman from Nepean confirmed yesterday that his agent Pat Morris has held discussions about a possible return to the Senators.

"I'd love to come back to Ottawa," York said from his Kanata home. "All I want at this point in my career is a chance to win a Stanley Cup and if I could come back to the Senators, that would be exactly what I want. For me, it is the perfect situation at this point in my career."

While the Canucks have also shown an interest in York, 35, returning to Ottawa -- where he played from 1996-2001 -- would be his No. 1 choice.

MESZAROS SIGNS DEAL

With veteran Greg de Vries and his $2.2 million (all terms US) salary dealt to the Thrashers as part of the Marian Hossa-Dany Heatley deal on Tuesday, York might be a good fit here if you consider he has 12 years of NHL experience.

York, who finished the 2003-04 season as the Predators' No. 2 defenceman, isn't going to be looking for a $2-million deal, either.

Right now, the Senators have Wade Redden, Zdeno Chara, Chris Phillips, Anton Volchenkov and Brian Pothier under contract.

Yesterday, Ottawa signed 2004 No. 1 pick Andrej Meszaros to a three-year entry level contract, which means he'll get a shot at earning a spot on the blue line, as will AHLers Christoph Schubert and Tomas Malec at training camp.

After Redden, Chara and Phillips, the Senators don't any defencemen with more than five years of pro experience, which could work in York's favour.

York, who has moved around since leaving Ottawa with stops in Anaheim, Nashville and even a brief stint in the minors, knows what Senators coach Bryan Murray will expect after playing a season with the Ducks when Murray was their GM.

Meanwhile, Senators GM John Muckler still hopes to tinker with the lineup. The club is looking for help at centre and has been trying to move veteran forward Bryan Smolinski before camp opens. There is talk the Predators are interested in Smolinski, who will count nearly $2.25 million against the salary cap this season.

The club had hoped to bring in Russian centre Alexei Kaigorodov -- a 2003 second-round draft pick -- but he has a year remaining on his contract in the Super League.

"I would think we are going to have to wait a year for Kaigorodov," said Muckler.

ROOKIE CAMP: The Hurricanes announced Wednesday they will participate in the Senators' rookie tournament from Sept. 5-9 -- which includes teams from Florida, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa.

Unfortunately there are going to be a lot of unemployed Jason York types out there when the CBA dust settles. So I can't blame the guy for trying to get a job here - via Bruce Garrioch's imagination. But you never know.

An excellent veteran AHL pickup for someone.

I can see you guys don't want York back at all, lol. But at the league minimum, that's fair value for any role he takes. Personally, I'd love him as our #6 defenseman at the right price. He was a top-4 guy on a playoff team in Nashville and they didn't suffer too much. I for one do think he's of NHL calibre. He's a right handed shot too, so he could take Pothier place. You wouldn't take him over Pothier for just as much $$$?

Chara - Phillips
Redden - Volchenkov
Schubert - Pothier

or

Chara - Phillips
Redden - Volchenkov
Schubert - York :D

Anyone else notice that Pat Morris is the agent for both Jason York and Greg de Vries? And that all news stories on the web about York being contacted by Ottawa come from Bruce Garrioch?

I never noticed that actually, so that a good pickup on the agents, grim.

Anyway, York was on CJOH news last night during sports and has said he and have agent have contaced John Muckler. The two sides are in talks but it's hard to tell if anything serious will come of them.

York was a solid senator, back in the day

If he doesn't sign with Ottawa, expect Vancouver as a possibility. I've heard rumours that the Canucks are interested. Wouldnt make a bad 6th/7th defenseman?

But I think this is like Baron, and Ronning. Both really want to come back to Vancouver, but the team has no room for them..even at the minimum(Ronning said he would play for it)

Maybe. But Ward plays both F and D. He's like our own version of Belak, only he makes 1/2 the $$$. If anyone gets the shaft because of this it'll likely be McGratton. Brian is a monster in regards to his fighting ability and imposing size, but is not a great skater, only average defensively, and his offensive game will be next to nothing at the NHL level. Guys like Neil also bring lots of energy to the table for instance while guys like McGratton just drop the gloves and are not a very good use of a roster spot when there a tough guys with some other pros around.

Ward, for instance has a pro of versitility. Maybe he lets Chara be that much more aggressive *drools* because now Z knows that if he's in the box we're not down to 5 D. Ward, likely dressed as forward, could move back to the blueline giving us 6 defenseman again. It's much easier to shorten your bench up front when the 4th liners barely play.

If Ward makes it over Mcgratton I will be VERY surprised. I think Mcgratton has the potential to be one of the better enforcers in the NHL. Nathan Perrot had a very good year last season fighting wise. Perrot and Mcgratton went punch for punch in every fight against eachother in the A.
