It's what NHL general managers feared during the lockout - a serious injury to one of their players who had found work elsewhere.

Alaska Aces leading scorer Scott Gomez suffered a broken pelvis in an overtime loss to the Bakersfield Condors in Game 4 of the EHCL playoffs on Saturday.

The NHL all-star and New Jersey Devils restricted free agent was headed back to his bench when the Condors' Ashlee Langdone slammed him awkwardly into the open gate.

Aces coach Davis Payne said prospects are good for a full recovery but like any broken bone, it needs time to heal. Payne, however, was not impressed with Langdone's actions.

''It's one thing to play that type of hockey, to finish your checks, to check hard, punch, slash and facewash people from behind,'' Payne said to the Anchorage Daily News. ''But it's another thing to take a premium superstar who did everyone in the game of hockey a favour by coming here and hit him like that.

''It's absolutely disgraceful

Bad news for the Devils, I only hope he recovers fully, and is ready when the 2005-2006 season rolls around. I guess a broken pelvis can take 4-6 months to heal.:curse:

Ouch for the Devs... I hope Gomez makes a speedy and full recovery. :(

I wonder if it was a resentment thing... some of the lower league guys have taken quite an exception to NHL'ers taking roster spots away.

Gomez injury not as bad as feared

Scott Gomez'sinjury is not as bad as initially feared.

The Devils forward who was hurt after being blindsided in an ECHL playoff game on the weekend will be sidelined up to a month with a hairline fracture in his pelvic area and won't require surgery.

"Rest will take care of it," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello told the New York Times. "In three, four or five weeks, he'll be perfect."

Gomez signed to play with the Alaska Aces during the lockout. He was paid a salary of $500 a week because he wanted to play in front of hometown crowds.

Gomez led the ECHL in scoring this season and was named a first-team selection.

Glad to hear his injury isn't as bad as they first thought it was. I hope he recovers well, and soon.:relief:nod:
