The Ottawa Senators announced they have signed defenceman Andrej Meszaros to a three-year entry-level contract. Meszaros was Ottawa's first-round pick, 23rd overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2004-05, Meszaros played his first North American pro season with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He recorded 11 goals and 30 assists to finish sixth in scoring among all WHL rookies and captured the Giants' rookie-of-the-year and defenceman-of-the-year awards. The 19-year-old went on to finish tied for fourth in team scoring after recording one goal and three assists for four points in six playoff games.

In his native Slovakia, Meszaros split his 2002-03 season between Dukla Trencin's junior and senior squads. He then earned a spot on the senior squad for the 2003-04 season and recorded six points (3-3) in 44 games as Trencin took the 2004 Slovak Republic Extraleague championship.

Meszaros has also represented his country on several occasions. He skated with Slovakia in the 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) U-18 World Junior Hockey Championship in Yaroslavl, Russia, registering two goals and two assists en route to the silver medal. He was also played for Team Slovakia at world junior championships in Helsinki (2004) and Grand Forks, North Dakota (2005).

Great to see argueably our best prospect locked up for three. Now, let's get going on Jason York who's said he'd play here for peanuts. That way we don't have to rush this kid into the NHL.

He already had an amzing two-way game and a terrific shot going into the draft. THN said he "could be coaxed into playing a more physical style". Done and done. Top 4 d-man for sure if he continues to develop at this rate. No need to rock the boat.

Am I the only on who remembers the horrors of the Jason York / Wade Redden pairings...

Lol, I still have nightmares.

Having said that, he has improved his defensive game and give-aways in his own end. He's still not good but it's better than it was. He even was trusted as a top-4 guy in Nashville for two years. Granted, they don't have as good a blueline as us.

But York has publically stated he'd love to come back home to a contender, he likes the franchise having been here before, and he's gone on record saying he would sign for at or close to the league minimum to play here. I wouldn't mind his veteran presence on the bottom-pairing to play beside the young guy who gets that 6th spot. There may be better options out there, but York is the only one I've heard serious speculation about and I for one would selcome him with open arms for something like 450k. At that price you're just getting a nice depth defenseman.

Yeah. York can keep looking. Of course he would like a nice $500,000 contract here. He is from Ottawa/Nepean and wants to end his career here. Too bad he's not from Toronto... where careerendinghometownism seems to matter.
