Heatley gets wish, but Ottawa pays big price as Hossa goes to Thrashers
By BRUCE GARRIOCH
Ottawa

Dany Heatly needed a change of scenery, something to erase painful memories. The Senators paid a dear price to make his wish come true: Marian Hossa.

The winger, who had asked the Atlanta Thrashers to trade him, was moved to Ottawa yesterday in exchange for Hossa and defenceman Greg De Vries.

Just hours after Senators GM John Muckler signed Hossa to a three-year, $18-million (all terms US) contract to avoid an arbitration hearing, the club sent him packing to Atlanta and signed Heatley to a three-year, $13.5-million deal.

"I'm just ecstatic about getting to go to a team like Ottawa," Heatley told the Sun in an exclusive interview last night from Kelowna, B.C. "It's tough to leave a place like Atlanta, but I really felt at this point this was the best move for my career.

STANLEY CUP CONTENDER

"With everything that has happened in Atlanta, I felt it would have been difficult for me to go back there.

"To get a chance to go to a Stanley Cup contender like the Senators is just great for me and something I'm really excited about. You never know where you're going to go when you ask to be traded ... to be moved to a place like Ottawa is just great news for me. I'm so excited."

While the Sun recently reported that Heatley was looking to be dealt, he only made the official request to Atlanta GM Don Waddell two weeks ago.

Heatley simply needed to get away from the place where a Sept. 29, 2003 car crash took the life of teammate Dan Snyder. Heatley was driving the car. Heatley said he did a lot of soul-searching before making the request, but felt it was the best move.

"It's not easy to ask for a change of environment and it was difficult for me ... probably one of the toughest decisions I've ever made and I had to talk it over with my family," said Heatley.

"But I felt it was best for me and it was time to move forward and get a fresh start. I thought about it a lot. I didn't just wake up one day and decide that I wanted to be traded. A lot of time and energy went into this before I made the decision to go ahead with it.

"It's tough to leave a place like Atlanta -- especially because the organization was so good to me and they supported me -- but I am going to a great team and I have some friends on the team (Chris Phillips and Wade Redden). I am excited about that."

Muckler said discussions to acquire Heatley started two weeks ago.

"I got the call from (Thrashers GM) Don Waddell and he explained the situation he had with Heatley in Atlanta," said Muckler. "He wanted to know what we were going to do about Hossa and thought we might have a fit. I phoned him back the next day to see if he was serious.

'PERFECT TRADE'

"We got a young player -- a goal scorer that we feel can help us -- and the Atlanta Thrashers got a terrific player in Marian Hossa. This is just the perfect trade for both teams because what it does is make both teams better."

Heatley was so excited about being dealt to the Senators, he boarded a red-eye flight to Ottawa last night and will attend a press conference this afternoon with Muckler and Senators coach Bryan Murray.

"If you look around the league, there are a lot of different places I could have ended up ... I don't think I could have asked for a better situation than Ottawa," said Heatley.

I like this trade and I'm confidant Heatly will find pre injury form and be a huge impact player for the Sens as Hossa was if not better. What bugs me is this $13.5-million deal. Why did Muckler not originally offer this money to Hossa if he was willing to offer it to Heatly. You can't tell me Heatly is worth that but Hossa was not
Anyways I'm excited to see Heatly improve over this season and bring great things to this club. Oct can't come quick enough.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Muckler surely offered this kind of contract to Hossa and he must have refused it.

Ya Maxy he did, and then offered Hossa a 5 year deal worth 20...

Exactly. Hossa turned down contracts in the 4.5 to 5 million dollar range per year. IMO fair contracts that Hossa should have accepted. In the end Hossa was the one who forced the Sens to do what they had to do to keep more of their core groug together. And the Sens received Heatly, who hopefully will help revitalize a club that needs it.

So you guys are saying Muckler offered Heatly 3.8 a year?
If Hossa was originally offered 4.5 this may not have been an issue.
All of this might of still happened but don?t tell me Muckler didn?t low ball Hossa and try to offer him much less then he?s worth then turn around and offer Heatly what he should have offered Hossa in the first place

I love the deal but I don't know about Muckler

Negotiaitons, Max. You always start low as management just as you always start high as a player agent. I'm sure if Hossa said he wanted a three-year deal worth 4.5M going into it Muckler would have given it to him. I think he has proven to be a very compotent GM in regards to contracts (look at all the key guys he's signed so far to solid deals) and dealings (he turned a sticky pending UFA situation into a minor one, saved us $$$ in both the short and long term, and got us an impact player in return). But that wasn't the case. As macca said we actually offered Hossa more than that at one point. He wanted his 6M.

Indeed. And I don't think there was any fan or head in the organization who thought otherwise. Just one player and his agent.

It wasn't Muckler who made comments in the paper about Hossa being as valuable to the Sens as Jerome Iginla is to the flames, or Joe Thornton is to the Bruins. The bottom line is Muckler eventually offered Hossa a fair deal and Hossa in turn put the Sens in a position where they had to trade him because he forced the Sens against a wall. Had Hossa won his arbitration case, he'd still be a free agent next summer and we'd be screwed. Hossa is the person who agreed to go the arbitration route wanting 7 million per season, and that's unbelievable considering he hasn't been great in the playoffs. Had Hossa not made those dumb comments he'd get much more sympathy from me. But now I wonder what Hossa is all about and whether he has the gonads to want to be the go-to guy on a Cup contending team. And Heatly's attitude about coming to play in Ottawa is refreshing, and that is something that has been lacking with some players that have donned a Sens jersey over the years.

Heatley "100 per cent" ready
Dany Heatley ensures his knee and eye problems are a thing of the past, and is ready for a fresh start in Ottawa.

OTTAWA (CP) -- Dany Heatley put on a Senators jersey for the first time Wednesday -- No. 51 instead of his normal 15. Peter Schaefer wears No. 15 for Ottawa. "I think we're still working on it, but I'm good with this one," Heatley said with a grin when asked if Schaefer's price for giving up his number was too high.

Then again Heatley is after change, having requested a move from Atlanta. That led to Tuesday's trade that sent forward Marian Hossa and defenceman Greg de Vries to the Thrashers. "I'm really excited to be here, excited to be in a great hockey city like Ottawa with a great team and great teammates," Heatley told reporters at an news conference at the Corel Centre. "Hopefully I can help this team and win a Cup."

Asked about his health, the 24-year-old declared himself "100 per cent right now." "I feel good. The knee isn't even an issue, the eye isn't an issue and I feel ready to go." The knee was injured in the September 2003 car crash that resulted in the death of friend and teammate Dan Snyder. Such memories helped prompt the move from Atlanta.

"It wasn't that I woke up one day and decided (to move)," he said. "Especially with the lockout and the long time off, just thinking about it a long time, me and my family and friends and people close to me, just everyone felt it was the right decision to make."

Heatley will earn $3.5 million US this season, $4.5 million in 2006-07 and $5.5 million the year after. He has 80 goals and 101 assists in 190 NHL regular-season games although injuries limited him to 13 goals and 12 assists in 31 games in 2003-04.

The second overall pick in the 2000 draft, he was the league's top rookie in 2001-02. His best season was 2002-03, when he had 41 goals and 48 assists.

"Pre-injury form"

???

31 GP 13 G 12 A 25 P -8

Wanna make it look even prettier? Take away his first 10 games and call them his preseason...

21 GP 10 G 8 A +1

So.. 18 points, + 1 in 21 games.

If he would've kept that pace for the entire season..

82 GP 39 G 31 A 70 P +4

#51 is going to make a helluva splash in the nations capital.

Just as I thought. Good to hear. There's no way we would take Heater on if the medical staff thought there would be any serious risks. We also ahve experience with this exact type of knee injury as Hossa had to make a full, successful recovery from it early in his career. And it was Hossa again who saw us learn something about eye injuries, after he tragically hit Berrard in the face.

What I'm worried about is his emotional stability. But with the change of scenary I'm sure he'll be fine.
