Brodeur, Smyth to lead Canada
TSN.ca Staff
4/11/2005
Canada's entry for the upcoming World Hockey Championship will be long on international experience. Of the 22 players named to the team on Monday by general manager Steve Tambellini, 19 have represented Canada at previous international tournaments. In goal, Martin Brodeur will be backed up by Roberto Luongo, Canada's winning goalie for the world championship in 2003 and 2004. The third goalie will be Marty Turco.
On defence, Canadian World Cup members Scott Hannan, Ed Jovanovski, Wade Redden and Robyn Regehr will be joined by Sheldon Souray, Chris Phillips and Dan Boyle.
Edmonton's Ryan Smyth will be joined at forward by Shane Doan, Kris Draper, Simon Gagne, Dany Heatley, Kirk Maltby, Brendan Morrison, Brenden Morrow, Rick Nash, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Mike Fisher. Canada still has to name one additional player prior to its first game of the tournament on Saturday, April 30th versus Latvia in Innsbruck, Austria.
While the team is missing the likes of Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic, Chris Pronger and Jarome Iginla, seven of the players named won gold on last year's Canadian squad at the worlds including last year's MVP Dany Heatley.
"We are very pleased to name this group of Canadian players today, and know that each of them is honoured and want to represent Canada with the passion to go for our third straight gold medal and to give back to our game across the country", said Tambellini.
The Canadian team will hold a training camp in Calgary starting April 13th before playing a pair of exhibition games against the United States in Halifax and Quebec City. However, several of the players named on Monday will likely miss the start of camp. Thornton and Nash have just completed their championship season with HC Davos in Switzerland whileSouray is still playing in the Swedish Elite League final. Smyth has been given a few days' off in order to spend time with his wife, who gave birth last week to the couple's second child.
The team will then travel to Europe where they will face Latvia and the Czech Republic in a pair of pre-tournament games.
Hopefully they continue the trend as of late, it would be nice to bring home the gold, and seeing as we have the best netminder in the world playing for us we should have a good shot at it.
I know its hockey, but its a short tournament and when its over the focus will be back on the fact that there is yet a CBA. That depresses me. I hope a Team Canada win can get me through this very depressing time.
Thanks for the dose of reality Am??? :D
You all have my solem promise that I will try my utmost best to stay away from any discussion on the CBA.
Aside from Brody and Smthy, who else do you think should be added to this team? And have they accepted the invites, as a lot of players for various reasons have stated they aren't in shape, etc etc....?

Mike Fisher was solid in europe, with 9g 18a 27p - in 21 games played. He is like matt cooke, and will help the team.
Surprised not to see Aucoin on there. He played for MODO, and would have been a solid choice on defense..not to mention his past experience with team canada. However Boyle has played well in Europe.
Morrow and Maltby? Maltby alright..if that line produce the way it did before. Morrow wasn't even a factor at the World Cup, and I'm surprised he is there.
Others not mentioned that had decent time in europe would be Tanguay, and Ribeiro. Tanguay is a fast skater, and I would have placed him there over marleau

I'm with TT on Tanguay... I think he's extremely skilled and also deserved a spot in last falls tournament
Tanguay is a product of the team he's on, ala Chris Drury.
Remember Chris Drury? He was supposedly a future 40-50 goal scorer while he was playing with Forsberg. What's he done since? Tanguay is the same.. an okay player, playing with one of the best in the league.
Marleau continuse to be the most over-rated player in the NHL.

I agree Brian
Marleau stank at the World Cup, and it amazes me he is here
Why not Ribs? he had a solid season in europe, and can play a fast game :coffee:
And Ribs is a pretty good actor as well...
I look at this team and I'm not impressed at all. Not nescessairely because of the names, as much as the fact that most haven't played all season. It will be a factor in a short tournament, IMO.

Is anyone surprised by the selections of Scott Hannan and Dan Boye on D?
Yeah they could have gotten McCabe!

With Brodeur, you always have a shot. I like the focus on youth being implemented into this team because it's time to think about the future. With all the vets retiring or opting not to play, let's get these young guys brought in to show what they can do. I'll keep me thoughts on who should or shouldn't have been there, till afterwords because there's been zero games played, so I will not judge the players till then. Team looks good though.

You're just asking for it! ;)
I don't mind our D Corps.. pretty strong. Obviously it's not what it was at the Olympics, or even the WC, but most of those guys (to my knowledge..) have been playing all season. Boyle won't get many minutes, and Hannan is similar to Regehr, as long as he's been playing all year I have no problems with him playing on the team.

.
The only reason I don't buy that is that Forsberg only played 39 games last season. I don't even think he played on a line with Sakic last season. I've watched Colorado play quite a bit last season and was impressed with Tanguay's puck and passing ability... To me he's one of the best 1 on 1 in the league.
Being on this team might also overshadow his skill.

Agreed there Mr. Power
Tanguay should have atleast been given a shot. If your going to give the arguement that he is a better player due to his surrounding players, then wouldn't Team Canada be the perfect fit? :D
Rather have Tanguay or Ribs over Marleau/Morrow

Your right..most have been playing, and Boyle had a good season in europe..thats why he is there.
I've said it before, but I will say it again..Aucoin was seriously overlooked. Maybe he didn't want to play? He has experience with Team Canada, and connections with Tambellini..not to mention the fact he was solid in europe..and is great on the PP..
Jovo Aucoin
Redden Souray
Phillips Regehr
Hannan

Mccabe is definately better than Chris Phillips and Dan Boyle. Without a doubt. My guess to the reasoning why Mccabe didn't make the team was that he hasn't played in a while and his stint in Europe was nothing short of horrible.

I'm in complete agreeance here. It'll be nice to see some of the younger talent get to lace up the skates for team Canada. The D might not be the most solid that it's ever been, it would be nice to have your Neidermeyers, your Prongers and your Blakes, but I'm going to enjoy 1. first of all...watching some NHL-calibre hockey 2. seeing these younger guys playing their hearts out.

Wouldn't you say that's a pretty big reason? While on the flip side Philips adapted well to the international game. Like I said before, McCabe has great offensive sense but no defensive sense whatsoever. Canada needs strong defensemen that can skate and adapt to a bigger ice surface.

Am I the only person loving the fact that many players that have been critized for a long time of not being complete players (McCabe, Comrie) couldn't cut it in Europe? Just an interesting tidbit ;).

Mccabe isn't nearly as bad defensively as you exclaim. One bad game in the playoffs and he's a sieve? Come on. If any forward is coming over the blueline, look out for Mccabe's rear end because it could be on its way to send you to the ice. If a player is in front of the net, Mccabe usually has no trouble getting them out, with the exception of Kieth Primeau, who nobody can get out of there.
Mccabe probably shouldn't have been on this team though because of his stint in Europe. It's only 7 games or something so it doesn't bother me from a leaf standpoint but I could see why he wasn't picked. My point was that Mccabe, overall, is a much better defencemen then Phillips or Boyle. He's just as good if not better than Scott Hannan.

Boyle was added due to his offensive capablities. Say what you will about the guy, but he has a stanley cup ring :thumb:
Hannan is above average, but I think there are better Canadian dmen than him currently available.
On the goalies, bad move not to have Theo there? I remember him saying he wouldn't play if he has 3rd string. However, he did play a season in europe..and not a bad one at that. It wouldn't have hurt to have him backup Brodeur :pimp:

Report: Walker added to Team Canada
TSN.ca Staff
4/16/2005
Team Canada has added their 23rd man to the roster of the world championship team, and it isn't Todd Bertuzzi. According to a report in The Tennessean, Nashville Predators winger Scott Walker accepted an offer on Friday to join the club by General Manager Steve Tambellini.
"I'm excited," Walker told the paper. "The past year has been nothing much but negative, so this will be a good change. In Canada, (the World Championship) is a really big deal." This will mark the third time Walker has competed in the tournament, but the first time since 2001.
"It's definitely the best team I've ever been involved with," Walker said to The Tennessean. "I'm sure if guys like Iginla or Mario Lemieux had been going, Scott Walker probably wouldn't have. But I'm thrilled to be playing with the guys who are on the list." The tournament starts April 30 in Austria and can be seen on TSN.

I'm a big fan of Scott Walker, so this is good news. He can play an aggressive style, which seems what team canada will be playing this season.
The team looks to be aggressive, and two way..instead of the high tempo from years past.

Not too surprised that Team Canada didn't add Bertuzzi to the team, I kinda figured that they were going to wait until they knew 100% that he was re-instated into the league. The thing I don't get is why Bertuzzi needs the NHL's permission to play in a IIHF tournament. I understand that the league has ties to the tournament, but most players in it are no longer active in the NHL(that is their season is over) so it would make sense if the country was able to decide whoever they wanted to, even though it is clear that hockey Canada is weary of crossing the NHL. I guess for what it's worth Walker is a decent choice, but I have mixed feelings about the method that this final spot was elected.
