In order to keep the vBulletin help and tips thread (http://www.hockeystation.com/showthread.php?t=112) clean and easy to follow, I have locked it so that it can be used as a reference simply containing the tips... and the tips won't get crowded out and lost by other discussion.

The purpose of this thread obviously is to actually carry on discussion of vBulletin problems and issues and tips. When good points are brought up, I will add them to the vBulletin help and tips thread. So discuss away if you have any vBulletin related questions. Please remember this is a help section for existing features. If you'd like to request new features, we can use other threads for that.

Under your profile, what's the difference between the following two options?

Edit Avatar

Edit Profile Picture

I searched the FAQ and didn't find it...

The avatar is what you're used to. It appears with every post.

The profile picture, is an optional photo of your self that only appears when people view your profile.

To illustrate, I have uploaded a profile photo of Dick Cheney, which you'll see if you view my profile :)

I'm currently checking out the enhanced feature (looks just like Word!) :clown: <<----even the same icons are here at your fingertips.

Wow!...this is much easier than working with tags. Inserting urls http://uselessjunk.com/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=11 is o.k. but you still need to tag them up manually to offer a cleaner look -> useless junk (http://uselessjunk.com/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=11).

Oh, look!...I found the quote tag wrap around

The paragraph formatting will be a nice touch. Either go left, enter or right margin. In making lists it will come in handy.

This is far superior to what the phpbb offers!

I like it! 2 thumbs up

Is anyone else having trouble creating threads? I can't and have been trying for a good while now. I always get this message:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /newthread.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The same thing happens when I try and preview a thread. Any help would be appreciated.

That's odd... That's an apache error... the server software itself, and has nothing to do with vBulletin, very odd indeed.

Man U, I'll try to look into it this weekend. That's definitely not an error anyone should be getting. If you don't mind, it might help to PM me your password so I can log in as you and try to recreate the error... but you don't have to. In the mean time I'll try to do some research about that when I have the time.

I'm going to have to scratch my head over that one.

Yeah sure, I'll PM you. No rush looking into it as it was just to report 3 minor signings by Ottawa. As long as I can still reply to already created topics I'm good.

LOL, I think she might have meant smilies in the quick reply box.

That never came standard, that's a hack. I'll get back around to it. This is still new to me too. I have had to re-do pretty much every single modification both large and small, that I made to the "out-of-the-box" vBulletin.

Feel free to either post comments / questions in here or send me a PM.

Thanks :)

EDIT: oh D'OH - maybe you meant smilies in the inline editing box... I'll look into that as well.

Good thinking Mel. I was referring to the quick reply box.

Is it just me, or does the "who's chatting" not show up any more?

I don't see it either.

Aha.. at the top, see where it says "Chat room"? It has a "1" beside it... then you can click on "Who's Chatting".

Yeah the new sigma chat integration is different than it was pre vb3.5. I should have mentioned.

There is no longer a box at the bottom of the home page... as you noticed, it displays right in the nav bar how many are in the chat (if any). to see who's in the chat you can click on any who's chatting link.

That will take a little getting use to but the chat seems to load faster now.

There are still a few quirks with the chat integration that I may or may not be able to help. I'll address using the chat in full in the vBulletin help and tips thread when I get a chance

Stil showing me in the chat room but I'm not there OOOPS!

It's supposed to update once per minute (which is actually more than I would prefer). So it should be accurate to roughly a minute or two at all times. It does not update instantaneously.

The chat is hosted on a remote server. The server where the chat is hosted and the server where the site is hosted communicate at regular intervals, so the site "knows" what members are in the chat. The chat also knows that the people in it are Hockey Station members by checking up against the Hockey Station user base.

If your logged in to the site, the chat should log you in automatically. If you're a Hockey Station member, but not logged into the site... you should still be able to access the chat with your HS user/pass combo. But I don't recommend that, it gave me weird results. If you're not a HS member than you cannot access the chat at all.

Again I'll touch on the chat in more depth when I get a chance, and see if I can work out any kinks.

Anyone else getting logged out after no activity or is it just me? This is the 2nd time this has happend to me now, while I was replying to a thread. This particular reply was long so it took me a bit to check for spelling and the like. After I was satisfied I hit submit only to get bounced to the login screen. Poof reply gone!! I even backspaced back past the login screen to the reply to thread screen but everything I had typed was gone!!

Anyone else getting logged out after no activity or is it just me?

This seems to be a known issue over at vbulletin.com after upgrading to 3.5. Possibly related to the "Remember Me" checkbox.

I have been logged out once while inactive (15 minutes of inactivity is the session timeout)... but I have also had some unexpected behavior of not being remembered when I return to the site. Sorry about that, when I hear word of a definite fix, I will make the changes and post here.

Mel

OK if you experience problems of getting logged out unexpectedly....

first, clear any cookies from this web site on your local machine. You should be able to do this just by logging out... But to be sure... it wouldn't hurt to do a search in your cookies folder for anything containing "hockeystation" and physically delete that.

After all previous cookies are cleared... log back into the site, and make sure the "remember me" box is checked when you do (it should be checked automatically now, but take notice to double check).

That should solve any problems you have had.

Lastly - until you are positive that you have no session issues... if you're going to make a long post, you're probably better off writing it in notepad or Word or whatever and just pasting it in.

If anyone has further problems, please PM me about it.

Thanks - Mel

Are you just posting a quote?

Mel

Are you just posting a quote?

That's why it would happen... If you click the quote box instead of the reply box... You will get that error.

There is a vBulletin mechanism that prevents people from quoting some one without adding any text of their own. I have it set ridiculously low... like 2 or 3 characters or something to let it pass... But if you try to make a post that is completely in [quote] tags, either by mistake or on purpose... that is theoretically the only possible way you could get the "message too short" error.

I have caught myself doing that a few times by clicking the wrong button.

If you;re sure that's not the problem... then the best thing you can do is send me a screen capture of both the message that you tried to post... and the resulting error.

If that's too much trouble... please copy/paste the complete message your trying to post, and if possible, copy/paste the resulting error. Then PM all to me.

I can only help if I have as many specifics as possible about the situation. If provided, I'll do my best to alleviate the problem.

thanks Mel :)
