View Full Version : How much is too much for Crosby?
Sidney Crosby will be the most popular player to be involved in trade talks as soon as a draft date and format is announced, no doubt about it. He was quoted saying that he is a Habs' fan and would love to wear the jersey. A level headed kid (unlike a certain #88 before him), he also mentioned that he would play for which ever team drafted him.
My question(s) to you is this... What would you be willing to give in order to see a Habs' jersey with number 87 on it in the future? What would be your maximum price to pay for Crosby? Who, on the team, the farm system and/or draft picks, would you "sacrifice", keeping in mind that the price will be high (remember the baby Lindros trade)? :coffee:

You never know, but it could just come down to who has the right ping pong ball.
But the team with the right ping pong ball will be bombarded with offers to obtain the rights for Crosby. So how much is too much to pay for his rights?

I think that if a team is willing to put all their eggs into Crosby's basket, then all the power to them. Unfortunately it is going to be a tough time for one player to change the game like Gretzky did with the Oilers. Offense was the name of the game back in the Gretzky era where games would have these high scores, and players would be racking up big numbers in points. Now however, defense is more the focus and a lot of teams are stacking their teams with guys who don't try to do anything offensively and rather follow the system outlined by the coach. This IMHO will be Crosby's biggest hurdle, as he will get a lot of attention from the defensive forwards and will not have a lot of room out there to move. I think that if you do end up with the pick, it would probably be smart to field offers and test the market for him because there could be a major deal to be made and it could turn out like the Avs/Nords were able to get out of the Lindros deal.

the NHL leader in +/- amongst defenceman last seaon ( only because sauceboy isn't on right now -), both Sedins and Dan Cloutier :pimp:.
Unfortunatley I don't think Nonis is in a position to be part of the Sydney sweepstakes, without gutting the core of the Team. I think the most tradeable player is Jovo and Gainey would want more. Bert is a possibility depending on the reinstatement situation and wether it is best for all concerned that he be moved.

From the Habs I could see Ribeiro, Komisarek, Theodore, and a first round pick being the price, if not more.
If the habs already have him and they're willing to trade him, I could see the leafs being in the hunt offering up a huge bundle of cash, Colaiocovo, Wellwood, Sundin, probably 3 first round picks and Tomas Kaberle or Bryan Mccabe for the hell of it.
I could see Edmonton being in the hunt with Smyth, Brewer, Hemsky, and draft picks on the table.
Calgary wouldn't surprise me either with Iginla, Phaneuf and picks headed the other way.
Maybe Pitsburgh would get involved sending Mark Recchi back to the habs along with Malkin, Fleury etc.
You know Glen Sather will be in the mix offering up his overpriced guys with huge amounts of cash and lots of picks.
Lou Lam may get involved from the devils but I doubt he'd pay the high price tag which will be on Mr. Crosby. Brodeur, Parise, Picks and Prospects... don't see it happening.
Who knows, the possiblities are endless.

I know I will take the heat for that comment, but the only one off that list that I wouldn't let go at this point is... Mike Komisarek!
If Edmonton can get Crosby in a deal and somehow keep Smyth, I'm building a statue of Lowe.
Brewer, York, Hemsky, First Rounder.. I think it could be a possibility to get it done, and it doesn't cripple us!

Komisarek is not bait, and never will be under any GM with reasonable sense, aka anyone but Houle
Zednik also should not be bait.
Ribs, Dagenais, Brisebois could be bait
Theo? Not at the moment..the Habs need him to succeed..without him its back to the starting block.

It's funny (or maybe not), but I would "sacrifice" Zednik in order to land the rights for Crosby. Zed has not been the same since the elbow he received from McLaren a couple of years ago. I'm not saying he's no good, but if you look at history, you need to give something good if you hope getting a top player or prospect in return.
Dagenais doesn't have a big market value, and neither does Breezer. Not as his age and the contract he has (around $4 million, if I remember right). It may take Zednik, Ribeiro and/or a combinaison of prospect(s) or draft picks to get someone like Crosby. I'll say it again, look at what was traded to get Lindros BEFORE he had played one single NHL game!

Yeah, he was indeed better before the hit. Note how well he played in those playoffs. BUT..I do think if the Habs had someone like Kovalev around longer..he would improve alot.
Agreed on Dagenais, was just basically a throw in..similar to a bag of pucks :clown: The reason he would go, was if Ribs went too. Markov could also be included..
:pimp:
Markov had an off year two years ago (I was going to say last year :slant: ), mostly due to his father's illness. Once he passed away, and combined with having a fellow Russian in Kovalev, he picked-up his game, allowing us to beat the Bruins in the playoffs.
Since we're so thin on defense, I would be very carefull before getting rid of someone at that position, especially a guy like Markov who's still young and hasn't reached the top of his game quite yet.

Yeah, but if your willing to part with Zedy ...
We will have to see how markov plays next season. He did improve, and I think can become a decent PP defenseman
I know I have mentioned this before, but I am very excited to see Komisarek and the Habs play next season :D

You're right, but if you look at the Habs' future, in the AHL and in junior, we're loaded with skills up front and in net, but very thin at the blue line. That's why I would "sacrify" some offensive skills. ;)

oh well.......looks like that ship has sailed........good luck in Pittsburgh...looks like it'll make Lemieux stay around for another few years thats never a bad thing....I think Pittsburgh is a good hockey town and this will rejuvenate them for sure.........they've got a lot of work to do but with the young talent they have on that team, they might be champions for many years in the future
