Manure heading to lake

LOWVILLE, New York -- More than 11 million litres of liquid manure that spilled into a river snaked its way closer to Lake Ontario yesterday as workers diluted a stinking mess already blamed for killing countless fish.

The manure flowed into the Black River in northern New York when a wall of a holding lagoon blew out late Wednesday or early Thursday, said Jim Martin, Lewis County's emergency manager.

By yesterday, the toxic tide had travelled 32 km from its starting point at a Lowville, about 100 km southeast of Kingston, Ont.

"We're concerned just with the fact that it happened," said Jim Keech, president of Utilities Kingston, which manages the water system for the southeastern Ontario city.

"Since Walkerton, any situation like this draws a lot of concern and heightened awareness from people involved in this industry."

In May 2000, seven people died and about 2,500 fell ill when E. coli contaminated the water supply in Walkerton, Ont.

I am going to have to upgrade my Tsunami insurance.

Yeah especially if you live in Kingston like I do. I guess I will have to drink wine instead of water. :gulppint:

Or do I believe this?

The manure spill killed thousands of fish. But it's expected to be significantly diluted by the time it reaches Ontario.

"The plume is quite slow moving. So it's still moving down the Black River in New York," said Mark Rabbior, a spokesman for the Ontario Environment Ministry. "At this time, neither the U.S. scientists nor our scientists here in Ontario believe that there's going to be any impact on the Ontario side of Lake Ontario.

"However, as a precautionary measure, we did notify the health units, water treatment operators and some municipalities." :conspire:

According to NYNewsday.com (http://www.nynewsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny--manurespill0811aug11,0,6200907.story?coll=ny-region-apnewyork), "The farm is one of the county's 20 largest employers." Couple that with Bush's relaxing of EPA rules, and the farm will end up paying a small fine and nothing else.

From my years of farming experience, I'd say that the earthen wall was too thin and hadn't been properly maintained. Every year, a few inches of clay should have been added to the inside (when empty) and a few inches of fill on the outside.

As for proximity to water; the rules around here are no drainage ditches anywhere near your manure storage. In fact, there are discussions about back up barriers being required in case of spills.

All in all, BC authorities are riding farmers' butts to keep manure out of rivers and streams. To most farmers this is common sense and they take appropriate percautions but a few farmers just don't care.

WOW! I've been to Watertown... OK through it.

An old buddy of mine from quite-a-ways-upstate, NY, had a camp on a lake. I went there a few times. You had to go through Watertown, and turn off about 5-10 miles before the Canadian border. Good memories.

This situation still stinks though - people should be held accountable. I've been around boat yards that either do not contain their waste chemicals properly.... or mistakenly cause fuel over-flow spillages. You should see the wrath that descends upon them! These farmers should face the same fines.

There is a lot of neligence on the part of the farmer and he should pay more than a little fine.
I am still leary of the water quality here. I am not exactly thrilled with the prospect of drinking even a little bit of cow ^&*%.

At least you have the City of Kingston water. We're on the well at TYC and I'm not going anywhere near the water. The thought of taking a shower next weekend sounds revolting.

A well should be safer in these circumstanses unless the water is straight from the lake or the St. Lawrence.

The water comes from the Bateau Channel I think, but I'm still not liking this prospect.
