Salary cap might squeeze out Redden
By DON BRENNAN, Ottawa Sun

You'd never want to do it. In the old days, you probably never would. But if you're the Senators, it seems you really have no choice. The new NHL is forcing you into a tough decision. It's making you trade a star player.

And if you're the Senators, you have to realize that player is Wade Redden.

As it stands, you have too many players who are either in or are falling into the $5 million per season range. You have to make sure you lock up your best, Marian Hossa. You also have to sign Zdeno Chara to a long-term deal before he can test the unrestricted free agent market next summer. In Chara, you have a commodity no one else does -- a talented 6-foot-9, 260-pounder who may be the toughest defenceman to play against. He can't be allowed to escape.

You might consider moving Daniel Alfredsson, but he is your captain and leader. Besides, you're going to need him to help Hossa on the right side when Martin Havlat prices himself out of the equation this season.

Losing an elite blueliner like Redden would hurt, especially on the power play. But maybe young Anton Volchenkov, who also plays the left point, can be groomed to fill that role.

Either way, you have limited options. With four players making $20 million, that leaves about $1 mil each for the remainder of your roster. And you still have a goalie, Jason Spezza, Chris Phillips and a number of other key guys to think of -- plus trade deadline, over-the- hump acquisitions and the fact that next year's cap may actually be less than $39 million.

No wonder GM John Muckler was strangely non-commital when asked if he was going to renegotiate long- term deals for Chara and Redden before they can test the open market. Muckler knows he can't.

He's also aware of this spot that he's in -- waiting too long to trade a guy like Redden diminishes what he could get in return. Moving him too soon could cost the Senators a chance at the Stanley Cup.

FROM THE PRESSBOX: Finally, there's talk the Senators may do to Bryan Smolinski what they should have done in the first place -- and that's bid him farewell. It still boggles the mind they opted for the skilled-but-too-laid-back Smolinski and his $2.25-million salary over Todd White. If White isn't as talented as Smolinski, he's close. He was also the lone Senator to live in Ottawa year round and he tirelessly represented the team in the community. Throw in that he makes less than half what Smolinski does and gives at least twice as much of himself on the ice, and the move was as head-spinning as a Havlat deke ... Eric Lindros has just signed up to play eight games this season against Chara and Volchenkov? The guy's not right in the head ... Another one of those masochistic attention-seekers bolted on to the Frank Clair Stadium turf in the final minutes of Thursday's game, running the length of the field and halfway back before he was apprehended by security. Wisely, he steered clear of the team benches and specifically Renegades equipment man Greg Batty, who earlier this season made a hard tackle on a similarly rambunctious fan. "They don't go to my side of the field anymore," said Batty ... Korey Banks should soon be feeling the same way. After eight games and seven interceptions, the Renegades outspoken DB said he has re-evaluated that goal of 10 picks he told the Sun before the season. "I'm going for 20," Banks said amid the euphoria of the team's third straight win. When told this, coach Joe Paopao responded: "He aimed too low with his number. To have the year he's having, it seems the ball is a magnet. Good for him, good for us." ... The deal that makes partners of Renegades owners Bernie Glieberman and Bill Smith was signed and made official yesterday.

What a load of bull. Redden, or any other key member of this team for that matter, is going nowhere this season. Now that the terms are in regards to yesterday's signing have now beomce public, our cap situation looks pretty good considering the talent we have on the roster. As we all know, everybody signed yesterday is on a one-year deal aside from Volchenkov who's inked for two.

Spezza: $940 000
Neil: $640 000
Volchenkov: $1.20M per season
Vermette: $600 000
Schubert: $450 000 (2-way)

Now, all Ottawa has to do is re-sign Kelly, McGratton, and Hossa. The first two will be making the league minimum if they sign two-way deals and end up playing with Ottawa. If they end up in Bingo they don't even count towards the cap. So really, we just need Hossa under contract and are now at, roughly $30M not couting two-way deals. If guys like Schubert etc all end up with the big club we're just at around 32M. But Hossa won't get 7M regardless so we will make the cap. Case closed. In actuality, Hossa will likely get 4M - 5M so we will be left with around a couple million dollars in "wiggle room" worst case scenario. If we want more we can ship one of Smolinski / de Vries to the highest bidder in nothing more than a salary dump.

We aren't going to have to trade anyone significant this year. Next year is going to be the summer of choices. The financials just don't add up to support this story. Not for a team trying to win a Cup.

One could say trade Redden before you lose him for nothing, but based on the way Mucks has dealt with such situations already (he opted not to buy-out Smolinski and de Vries) it seems quite likely he'd just qualify Redden and trade him for whatever he could as opposed to getting zero return. And if Pronger and his contract got Brewer and a few fine prospects I can only help but assume the price for Redden, although we can't expect it to be fair value-wise in such curcumstances, would see us get something of value in return.

There's a half-page article in The Ottawa Citizen today (Page C6) called Making A Case For The Defence where six "experts" (Jacques Demers, Jacques Martin, Chris Phillips (he's not biased, he swears), Marc Crawford and Jim Kyte) pick the top 6 defencemen in the NHL. All but Crawford include Chara. All but Crawford and Kyte pick Redden. Everyone picks Niedermayer and Blake. Kyte picks McCabe. Crawford picks Jovo. The article is not online.

I think this is a huge year for Alfredsson in a Sen's uniform. He's got to show that he is truly a team leader, especially after the questionable/selfish decisions he made during the lockout. So saying Redden is automatically gone in order to keep Alfredsson is a bit premature as far a I'm concerned. Who knows how 'fractured' the NHLPA is and how this may play in the Senators' dressing room? This is not meant to bash Alfredsson, but only to suggest what may be a reality. And IMO Alfredsson's lack of production in the playoffs has been because he's never been paired with a 'playoff' type centre - I'm not convinced it's Smolinksi either....

I agree with the White/Smolinski comparision with this rebuttal: Todd White should only have been used in a 4th line role with the Senators. And Smolinksi may benefit from the new rules, but at $2.25 million? Does Muckler have any mulligans available he can use?

Sens unlikely to deal Redden
TheFourthPeriod.com

Despite reports earlier in the week, the Senators are in fact trying to keep defenseman Wade Redden, rather than trade him, according to the Ottawa Sun.
Redden confirmed last night that the Senators have approached his agent, Don Meehan, about a contract extension.

The Senators are hoping to lock up the veteran blueliner, along with Zdeno Chara, to long-term contract, and whether a deal is reached or not, the Sun claims nobody is on the verge of being dealt anytime soon. "My preference is to stay in Ottawa," Redden told the paper.

"That is something when this Team Canada camp is over I plan to meet with Don Meehan about. There haven't been any formal discussions, but we're going to sit down and talk about all the possibilities. "I don't think there's anything to it. I want to stay in Ottawa.
