Sedins - good, they are slowly improving, hope it keeps up.
Salo - good, I like him, decent defenseman.
Bouck - ok, hope he improves a whole bunch this season.
Cloutier - bad, Nonis should trade Cloutier for a good goalie.
Cooke showed what he could do during the no Bert days of the last season. Allen should be happy with what he gets.
Ohlund always seems overshadowed by Jovo but I'd take Mattius over Jovo any time.

Crawford seems enamoured with Cloutier, as he has lasted longer than any other goalie here since Kirk McLean.
I thought I heard Allen had signed?
Of the two top Dmen, Jovo has the higher profile, but Matty is the one to keep.
Mojo Radio says the Canucks and Cloutier are close to signing a long term deal.
Why, why, why? Cloutier sucks when the games count the most. He's not the goalie the Canucks need if they ever want to go all the way. :(

Nonis is on MOJO and in between sandwich bites, he said the Canucks and Cloutier are close to a deal.
How do you guys feel about Joseph? Whould you rather him at 900k or Cloutier at a likely higher price (1.5M for two years is a guess).

Regular season, I'd take Cloutier. Playoffs, I'd take Joseph. Cloutier just sucks in the playoffs.

I agree with the dirty tea bag
But remember..Cloutier is looking for probably..2 million a season..
Canucks lock up Cloutier
On Wednesday, Vancouver signed forward Anson Carter to a one-year deal.
Sportsnet.ca -- The Vancouver Canucks have locked up their goalie for the next two years.
Sportsnet has learned goalie Dan Cloutier has signed a two-year deal worth $5 million. The official announcement is expected later today.
In 2003-04 Cloutier played in 60 games for Vancouver, amassing a 33-21-6 record and a goals against average of 2.27.
Cloutier was a first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers in 1994.

Way too much indeed
However..wait a second..
Perhaps Nonis thinks Cloutier will play better, with the new rules etc.?
Lets hope so

The way Nonis talked about Cloutier on MOJO radio, you'd think they were more than just friends. (Where is that winking smilie?) Anyways, wink wink wink. :D

For this type of money given his track record, Lenny ( as our fishy friend at the other place calls him ;) ) had better continue his improvement along the lines of Vezina and Conn Smythe canidate. Somehow I think that won't happen :(

$2.5 million for Cloutier? And people call Lou Lamoriello crazy for signing Mogilny...:D
Sportsnet says "On Thursday the Canucks also signed defenceman Sven Butenschon, who is sure to pique the interest of Sportsnet Pacific highlight guru Don Taylor."
Sven Butenschon?
His page on NHL.com says he's defensively minded, something the Canucks need. He could be the Canucks #6 d-man.

Right now if Ohlund isn't signed the Canucks have questions at defence spots 2,4 and 5. They have pleanty at #6 with the signing of Sven whatever, including Brookebank and Baumgartner. Is Bryan Allen ready to be a top 4 defenceman? Sami Salo is ok at #3, but if Ohlund isn't signed or wins too much at the arbitration that it skewrs the cap what then? Cooke and Ruutu need to be signed and I am guessing Chubarov is staying in Mother Russia, so he is gone without compensation.
Canucks acquire defenceman in trade
VANCOUVER (CP) -- The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenceman Steve McCarthy from the Chicago Blackhawks for a third-round draft pick in 2007 and have also signed defenceman Sven Butenschon.
McCarthy, a 24-year-old from Trail, B.C., had a goal and three assists in 24 games for the Blackhawks in 2003-04. He missed the majority of the season with a groin injury.
"My mom starting crying and my dad is ecstatic," McCarthy said on a conference call. "I'm going to be playing in their background with a lot of friends and family. Obviously growing up a good B.C. boy and a Canucks fan, it's a dream coming true, that's for sure."
Chicago drafted McCarthy 23rd overall in the 1999 NHL entry draft. The six-foot, 200-pound blue-liner has three goals, 13 assists and 45 penalty minutes in 134 career games.
McCarthy is a former captain of the Canadian junior team, winning bronze medals at the 2000 and 2001 world junior championships, but wasn't been able to find similar success with the Blackhawks.
"It's no secret there's been a few ups and downs in Chicago," he said. "I've gone through a few changes there with different GMs and different coaches. There's not too many things that haven't happened to me."
Butenschon, 29, spent last winter with Mannheim of the German Elite League and had a goal and five assists in 50 games.
The six-foot-four, 215-pound blue-liner from Germany has played for Pittsburgh, Edmonton and the New York Islanders during his seven-year career. He has two goals and 12 assists in 132 career NHL games.
He was drafted 57th overall by Pittsburgh in the 1994 NHL entry draft.

I hope McCarthy can return to junior form. Looks like McCarthy, Baumgartner, and Butenschon will be vying for the Canucks #5 and #6 defensemen spots.

Its an alright deal. Could have gotten worse, thats for sure.
Hopefully he has a good camp, and can be a decent defender.
The Canucks NEED a veteran solid defenseman. These two new guys are alright, but we need..not want..need a solid defender
Otherwise same old nonsense

Vancouver Canucks General Manager and Senior Vice President Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed defenceman Mattias Ohlund to a new multi-year contract.
?We are extremely pleased to have come to terms with Mattias,? said Dave Nonis. ?He has proven himself to be one of the premier defencemen in this league and we are thrilled that he will be wearing a Canucks jersey to start the 2005-06 season.?

^^ Awesome news T-Tizzle, it's great to have our number one defencemen back to shine for us. I can't wait to see him bring his game up a notch again. That last season he had was incredible in my blind eyes. Such consistancy. :]

My favorite current Canuck resigned. Yes!
Yaa, I would have cried myself to sleep many nights if Ohlund left the Canucks. Glad to see Nonis finally sign the Canucks top defenseman. Now if Cooke signs, and the Canucks get a Murray Baron type defenseman, maybe even Murray Baron himself, the Canucks will be set to make a run for the cup until Cloutier does something stupid. :D

Agreed with all you said..minus Baron
Baron is past it. The Canucks need someone mobile, and tough. He would get lost in the new game, even worse than he did in the old. Sorry Baron, pass.
Word is 3.5 a year for Ohlund.
One of the best signings in the league.

Indeed. My applause to the Nucks organization for continuing to strike fair deals with their players, and not screwing up the market for everybody else.
Tampa should take notes.

Maybe Nonis can put down his grilled cheese sandwich for a few minutes and try to convince Dana "The Pylon" Murzyn to come out of retirement.

Cooke, Canucks bicker over numbers
September 1 @ 9:00 AM
The Matt Cooke contract talks are turning into a war of words.
According to a report out of the Vancouver Province, Cooke's agent Pat Morris told the newspaper that no offer was tendered which would have made Cooke the "fourth or fifth" highest paid forward in the Vancouver lineup.
"If he was willing to put Matt as No. 4, we'd be signed," Morris told the Province.
Trevor Linden is the fourth highest paid forward at $1.52 million, followed by the Sedin brothers at $1.25 million.
The amount Cooke is believed to be looking for varies from the $1.25 million the Sedins are being paid, upwards to $2 million. Canucks GM Dave Nonis said if he was looking for Sedin money he would already be signed, but Morris is also saying Cooke's demand for $2 million is "completely inaccurate."

Cooke is way of out his league with this standoff
Nonis offered 1.25 million, same as the twins. Why does he think he is worth more than them?
The guy is a 3rd line grinder/pest, who filled in alright on the top line. So what if he produced..it was temporary. I would bet he wouldn't have the same success all season long
I say if he doesn't agree before October, trade him. Nonis has signed/re-signed players who want to play here. Its clear that Cooke does not, or else he would have accepted the fair offer..and substantial raise.
What really makes me laugh, is some fans think Cooke will have 60- 80 points on other teams
