The Philadelphia Flyers have locked up a key part of their roster for next season, signing forward Simon Gagne to a one-year deal worth $2 million US.
The deal is about $25,000 US more than the qualifying offer that was extended to him last month.
Gagne, 25, has been a mainstay with the Flyers since the team selected him 22nd overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
He has 113 goals and 245 points in 354 career games.
In 2003-04, Gagne scored 45 points in 80 games and helped lead the Flyers to the Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
His best season thus far came in 2001-2002, when he led the Flyers with 33 goals and finished second in team scoring with 66 points. Gagne was also selected to Canada's men's Olympic hockey team that year and helped lead the red and white to a gold medal in Salt Lake City.

Gagne was smart to sign a one year deal. You might see him do the same next summer... if he stays with the Flyers.... because as long as he's not under contract in July 2007, he qualifies to become a UFA at the tender age of 27. A notion simply unheard of in the previous NHL.
It's doubtful you'll see to many of these mid 20's guys sign on long term. If they do .... it means they love where they are and want to stay there.
But most of them have their eyes on becoming UFA's with just 7 years in the league. (some as young as 25).
They guys who are signing long term deals are the guys trying to secure their future.... mainly on the down slide of their careers (there are exceptions, this is a generalization I know). But the upper echelon mid-20's guys are definitely leaving their options open.

Gagne said he wants to stay in Philly for his entire career. I won't be the least bit surprised when he signs a long term deal next summer.

Yes, he just felt like signing a 1 year deal now so that he could pad his stats from a year of playing with Forsberg before signing that deal
Good point PDO. Pad the stats for a year playing with one of the league's best setup men, and get a rich payoff on the free agent market the next year. He'll probably be asking for even more, and the Flyers will be saddled with the contracts of Forsberg, Hatcher, Rathje, and Therien, and probably won't be able to afford him. See what going insane during free agency gets you?:D

It gets you Therien off the books, gets you Brashear and Desjardins off the books as well. All 3 contracts are done next year.
Brash -- $1,748,000.00
Rico -- 2,280,000.00
Therien -- 500,000
That's where it gets us.

This was announced at the introduction of Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje.
Wasn't much said. Basically it was the Derian Hatcher press conference. Mike said about 2 words, is really not a good public speaker. Just asked about the rules, Hatcher's knee.
Clarke also said Johnsson, Gagne, Radivojevic and Sharp all signed their offers.
Esche and Seids are the only ones left.
Have to say, Mike and Derian are freaking giants. They made Clarke look like a midget.

Kim Johnsson is returning to Philadelphia.
The 29-year old defenceman has accepted his $2.2 million qualifying offer from the Flyers.
Johnsson played 80 games for the Flyers in 2003-04, posting career highs in goals (13) and points (42).
He spent 2004-05 with HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss National League, where he posted 14 points in 24 games.
Robert Esche remains the lone key Flyer yet to sign a deal with the club for 2005-06.
Johnsson will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
