This has been plagueing me for the past couple weeks or so. And then it finally hit me who has achieved so much but is looked down upon as not even being thought about in the same breath as other great QBs.
That man is Brett Favre. Favre has the record for most consecutive games started, 206. No one is even close. He is third all-time in passing yards but will most likely pass Elway later this year for #2. He ranks 2nd in TD passes, only to Marino but is 44 behind. If Favre plays for 2 more years, he will most likey own that record too. Favre has a Superbowl ring and 3 MVP trophies. Favre also is 8 wins behind Elway for the most wins by a QB. He will also most likely beat out Elway this year and if he plays 2 years he will definitely have the record.
So have I convinced anyone yet???

I'm a Packer fan, I need no convincing
Why does this question have to come up every Hall of Fame weekend?
This is a very simple question to answer. No the answer is not Joe Montana with all the Super Bowls, nor is it Dan Marino with all of the records. It's the man perfectly near the top of both categories - the best of both worlds, if you will. It is none other than #7.
Let's just stroll back into John Elway's illustrious career. He was drafted first overall in 1983 after winning the Heisman trophy at Stanford with a great few years there. That is just the beggining.
He won the NFL's MVP award in 1987, which was a year after his most famous fourth quarter comeback (a total of 47 in his career) where he led the Broncos 98 yards to tie the game. The Broncos, led by John, went on to beat the Browns in that AFC Title game. In 1986, the Broncos lost in the Super Bowl, which was the first appearance of three in four years.
Elway is fourth all time in TD passes (Marino's first, Montana's seventh), second in passing yards (again Marino's first, Montana's seventh), he's one of only two QBs to throw over 50,000 yards, had a pass completion percent of 56.9. John Elway also at the end of his career was still on top of his game and led Denver to back-to-back Super Bowls which were two great sports moments in my life. He retired on the top of the world, something many QBs never did.
The only QB who had a better statistical career was Marino, but since Elway has won two more Super Bowls and have appeared in five more than Marino ever will, John Elway is clearly the greatest of all time to line up behind centre.

Joe Theisman ;)Well at least you didn't rub salt into the wound by mentioning Doug Williams, circa 1988. :curse:
IMO, Peyton is a championship away... until that time; Dan Marino.
I'm going with Favre. He's got a championsip. The MVP's. Playing through injury after injury to make over 200 consecutive starts as an NFL quarterback is truly amazing. He stands above the other great QBs IMO.
Well at least you didn't rub salt into the wound by mentioning Doug Williams, circa 1988. :curse:Hey, I could have said Mark Rypien. A great Canadian. ;)
The Redskins team that won Super Bowl XXVI was one of the greatest teams ever assembled. They're easy to dismiss because of the 'generic' talent, but their domination was undeniable.
Mark Rypien had a career year. A year that he would never again duplicate. There were basically two reasons for his success. He threw the long pass with unparallelled success and accuracy. It seemed every time 'Ryp' aired it out, it flew squarely into the outstreched arms of a receiver in full stride. And he also received the best pocket protection that an NFL quarterback had ever seen or has since seen. Version two of the Hogs allowed an incredible 9 sacks in 18 regular and post season games. 8)

Joe Montana, he was the man in San Francisco for ten plus years and led them to four Super Bowls always coming up big in those games.
He was the ultimate leader and always made sure that his team was ready to put up their best week in and week out.

I agree, and it's not cause I'm being Biased :thumb:
Even though I never really saw him play, his career numbers and his performance in the big game make him the greatest IMHO.

Joe Mantana can't touch John Elway when it comes to career numbers and Dan Marino can't touch John Elway when it comes to Super Bowls, AFC Championships and other big game wins. Elway is the undisputed number one quarterback of all time.

Joe Montana was blessed with Jerry Rice... and an extremely dominant defense led by Ronnie Lott. He was great yeah... But he kind of reminds me of Troy Aikman, he had a huge supporting cast.
And not for nothing, but when Montana was out and Young was in... it was as if the 49'ers didn't even change. In fact it seemed they got better.
Favre hasn't always had a perfect supporting cast. I remember like it was yesterday when NY Giants Leonard Marshall ended Montana's season with a nice clean hit.
I also remember like it was yesterday when Brett Favre was not only starting games, but winning them, with a separated shoulder.

Elway doesn't come close to touching Brett Favre. Elway has thrown as many INTs as Favre and 100 LESS TDs. And Elway would have never won a Super Bowl if Shanahan had never came to Denver and put in his magic 1000 yard RB system that produced Terrell Davis putting up 1800 and 2000 yards in consecutive years. Elway also played with arguably the best TE ever, Shannon Sharpe. Elway also played a with Rod Smith while he was in his prime who may also make the HOF. Favre has had no dominant WR or RB, but still won MVPs and a Super Bowl.
Here are some intriguing comparisons.
Peyton Manning is like Dan Marino - Lots of records, inflated statistics, no Super Bowls.
Tom Brady is like Joe Montana - Plenty of Super Bowl wins, their numbers aren't too high.
Michael Vick is like Steve Young - Lefthanded, scrambles and runs well, not the best arm.
Interestingly enough there is no modern day quarterback like John Elway. There's no one who has been able to combine outstanding statistics with winning the big games and ultimately winning multiple Super Bowls. No wonder. The greatest quarterback ever can not be duplicated.

Remember that the 49ers still won a few Super Bowls before Rice was in town.

First off, don't compare Mike Vick to Steve Young, because Young could pass the ball with some accuracy. And Mike Vick also has a hell of an arm, he just couldn't hit a Hummer from 3 feet away. If anyone is like Steve Young today, I would have to say it is McNabb.
But that's all besides the point. I didn't happen to see a duplicate of Brett Favre up there....hmmm maybe because the best QB ever can not be duplicated, to quote a certain someone. I doubt that you will find a QB like Brett Favre that put up the statistics like Favre, that by the way beat out John Elway, but also have no outstanding players to help out. Like I said before, Elway needed a superb running game to succeed. Favre has done everything you can ask of a QB without much help.
Brett Favre...by the way beat out John Elway:conspire:
Uh, huh. Whatever you say.

I didn't happen to see a duplicate of Brett Favre up thereYeah, it is tough to find a cocky, pompous S.O.B. to compare Brett Favre too. I'll keep looking though.

Uh, huh. Whatever you say.
Way to take a quote out of context. He was speaking about statistics.
Passing TDs
Favre - 388
Elway - 300
Passing yards (Favre should pass Elway by the end of the season)
Favre - 50990
Elway - 51475
Completions (Favre has less pass attempts, yet has connected 300 more times)
Favre - 4426
Elway - 4123
Also, Brett has won 3 MVPs in his career. Elway may have the advantage in Super Bowls at 2-1, but you fail to mention Elway's 3 previous FAILED attemtps. The only reason he won those last two Super Bowls at the end was because of a Mike Shanahan, Terrell Davis, and a dominant running game.
Yeah, it is tough to find a cocky, pompous S.O.B. to compare Brett Favre too. I'll keep looking though.
Cocky, pompous S.O.B. Why would you say that? Because he likes to run and jump in the end zone after scoring a TD? I've seen many guys in the league do a lot worse. It's your boy Elway that threatened to quit football forever and play for the Yankees after being selected by the Baltimore Colts. If anybody's a complete asshole, it's him.
Dorsey Levens and Antonio Freeman are a couple names that come to mind from his ONLY Super Bowl championship.
The Packers didn't have a 1000 yard rusher or 1000 yard receiver in their Super Bowl season. On his career Levens only has 2 1000 yard rushing seasons, and Freeman had 3 1000 yard receiving seasons. Hardly anything to write home about. Elway on the other hand had an unreal Terrell Davis while he was healthy. Rod Smith and Shannon Sharpe will both probably be HOFers too.
Five interceptions against the Cincinnati Bengals. Retire already, you mediocre piece of crap. Favre is making a mockery out of himself, a la Michael Jordan. This crappy play is what he'll be remembered for. Oh yeah and by the way, John Elway was winning multiple Super Bowls at this point in his career. Enough said.

A little late and I have not done the Stats, but Roger Stauback in the NFL for me. CFL have to go with Ron Lancaster. If I were picking all time teams, those guys would be on them for me.

I know, right. Brett Favre can't win with guys like Donald Driver, Antonio Chatman, Bubba Franks, and Tony Fisher. Damn him. John Elway only had Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe, and Terrell Davis.

One player doesn't make an entire team. Favre has a team team full of guys with less than 3 years experience in the NFL. Then on top of that Walker, Ferguson, Green, and Davenport are all out of the lineup. Pro Bowl RG Marco Rivera was replaced in the offseason with William Whitticker, a rookie selected in the 7th frickin round. Then Mike Wahle was let go and replaced at LG with Adrian Klemm, an average tackle that they converted to guard. So argueably the best line in football got worse, the team has no running game whatsoever, and 5th stringer Antonio Chatman is now the starting split-end. I'm sure your boyfriend John Elway would be racking up the wins with this crappy roster. Elway won Super Bowls at this point in his career because the team around him was great, not because he was carrying them on his back.
Like Liam said in the other thread, your bias bullsh*t is really getting annoying to read. It's alright if you think Elway is the best QB to play the game. I don't have a problem with that, and others out there share that opinion with you. However, when talking about things non-Bronco related you just come across as a sh*t disturbing troll.
End of discussion.
I would ask that you consider if something as trivial as a "best quarterback" debate is really worthy of personal attacks.
