ESPN reports that the Columbus Blue Jackets have signed restricted free agent forward Rick Nash to a five-year contract worth $27 million US.

Nash, who was taken first overall by the Blue Jackets in 2002, shared the Rocket Richard Trophy with Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuk after scoring 41 goals in 2003-04.

"I love it in Columbus," Nash told the Columbus Dispatch last week. "There's nowhere else I want to play."

This was a no-brainer for Columbus, as far as I'm concerned.

Well we all figured this would eventually happen, Nash is the face of this franchise and will be for the next 5 seasons which is great for the city of Columbus if he can keep putting up 40+ goal seasons. I think that the Jackets are one Forward away from being very scary as with Nash and Zheredev they have the potential to thrive in an offensive minded league which combined with the mega signing of Adam Foote will turn this team into a playoff team.

Seems a bit heavy for the first contract for a guy that can't paly defense, it's too bad they couldn't get him cheaper, although I'm sure by year or so he'll be one of the most underpaid players in the league!

I just see it has they had to lock him up for as long as possible since he is the player that the team has to build around. And while Doug McLean may regret giving out these huge long term deals, for the time being he is on his way to building a contender in Columbus and this is just a peice of the puzzle. Besides for a guy who could score 41 goals in the trap infested NHL of '03-'04, imagine what he may do in the "New" NHL

Zherdev is also a big piece of the puzzle :).

Agreed.

Also, he has scored 40 plus goals ONCE. I know he will again, thats for sure.

BUT, I still think this is a bit much for him.

Also remember that Rick Nash is only 20 years old and he has already scored 41 goals in as Insider pointed out the "trap infested" NHL. Imagine what he will do with the rule changes in place to increase scoring and the fact that he is only 20 years old and still has a few years before he enters his prime. It's scary to think what he might do in his career.

True. I wouldn't put it past him for him to eventually score 60 goals. 70? Some people think so, but I don't.
