Palffy pens with Pittsburgh

Sportsnet.ca -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have added another star to help rebuild the franchise.

Sportsnet has learned the Penguins have agreed to a three-year, $13.5-million contract with free agent forward Zigmund Palffy.

Pittsburgh has added some serious firepower to its squad since the lockout came to an end.

They won the draft lottery -- and more importantly the rights to Sidney Crosby -- in July, and this week they have also added Palffy and all-star defenceman Sergei Gonchar to their lineup.

Former Tampa Bay bruiser Andre Roy also headed to Steeltown this week to add some protection for Mario Lemieux and Crosby.

Palffy has averaged more than a point per game throught a career that began with the New York Islanders who dealt him to Los Angeles after six seasons. The former King has recorded 318 goals and 671 points in 642 career games.

Only 3 years.. very good signing by the pens.

How about that Pittsburgh power play?

Recchi, Crosby, Lemieux, Palffy, Gonchar :band:

Don't forget Dick Tarnstrom on that PP, he's been good for them the past few years and with alot of people around him he should improve further.

Perhaps...but a team that will be a dynasty in Pittsburgh will be one that doesn't have Mark Recchi and Mario Lemieux being huge roles.

Amazing how quickly one player has turned around this franchise eh? :thumb:

Let's be honest here, if Palffy stays healthy he can be a huge asset to this team, and with the signing of Gonchar earlier in the week this is shaping up to be a very mobile team who will be able to hurt you on the rush. The only real flaw I see is their weak defensive unit as they have drastically improved up front and have a great puck moving defenceman in Gonchar, but I think if you get this team hemmed into their own zone and get it deep into Pens territory, you have a great advantage over them and probably could get some golden opportunities in front of Fleury or whoever is in net for them.
