Just watching Jeopardy. The category is "Canadian flags" and the $2000 clue is this:
The flag of this province is shown here?
http://www.travel-images.com/quebec.gif
The answer this girl gives:
What is Ontario?
I was ROTFLMAO at that one. The most obvious flag in Canada, like the fleur de lys didn't give it away already.

Why would any average American know each Canadian province's flag. When would they ever see these flags unless they went to Canada, or studied Canadian province flags for some obscure reason.
Could you identify a New York state flag or a Massachusetts state flag on jeopardy?
I couldn't. I'd reckon 99.9% of people don't have the time or inclination to study local flags, from any country.

They're on Jeopardy so therefore they're smarter than the average American or Canadian for that matter?
Could you identify a New York state flag or a Massachusetts state flag on jeopardy?
Not only could I recognise those but I could identify a few more. We had to learn them in grade 8 along with every state and capital.

Coming up through American schools, I was taught to learn all the states names and their capitals... as yet another completely useless exercise in keeping kids occupied. Today, I know the capital of New York is Albany...I'm pretty sure the capital of Massachusetts is Boston. Beyond that I'd be guessing...
Flags? I was never asked to identify a single flag in my education years. Not from the states, Canada or anywhere else.
Different strokes for different folks.

Couldn't agree more.
Knowing a provinces flag makes you stupid now?
I couldn't pick out most American States flags beyond Texas.

I thought for sure everyone could recognize the Quebec flag. It is the only provincial flag in Canada that I could draw or recognize without any clues. Stood out due to the fleur de lys, thought it was common knowledge. Guess not... :conspire:

The only one I know is quebec, I know albertas okay I guess... For the states, I doubt I would recognize any.

Yep, it's right next to West Dakota.

I thought that they joined Canada and the eagle on their state flag was changed to a beaver. ;)

I was ROTFLMAO at that one.I actually tuned into a later edition after I has saw this thread and I thought the funnier thing in Double Jeopardy was that she asked for "'Brain Cheese' for $1200, Alex." The category was 'Brain Tease.' Hahaha...she said "Brain Cheese."
Also she never made it to Final Jeopardy with her grand total of -$1600 or so. Must not have been too smart.

Like the Avatar, J.R. . Chris has never looked better.
I would be hard pressed to correctly identify the Canadian Provincial flags, without guessing on the last three or four.
Countries I'm good at.

I agree with this statement Mel but I still think most educated people should be capable of an educated guess. The symbol is a historically known French symbol. I don't know all the details or it's history but I believe it was used to distinguish 17, 18 and 19 the century French war ships. I?m sure it has many other purposes and history.
Quebec is Canada's only French province and was colonized by France
The symbol is from France
Deduction? =]
Although I do completely agree that this being on a game show it would be easy to make the wrong guess
Okay Canadian flag-knowing smartypants-es-es... there are 31 Mexican states and 31 Mexican State flags... From what I read... I am sure you all know most of them... There will be a quiz later.

Hmm, I always thought that the French sailed under a different flag.

To be honest, I would have a very difficult time scoring 100% on a test for identifying provincial/territorial flags....

Newfoundland - Reminds me of a ship's flag.
Qu?bec - Fleur de Lys. Duh.
Nunuvut - Newest flag.
Saskatchewan - Born in the province.
Nova Scotia - Has Scotland's flag in the background.
Ahnt-air-E-oh - See it so often.
Alberta - I own an Alberta flag.
British Columbia - Setting sun on the coast.
Manitoba - Roaming buffalo.
The rest would be guesses.

Try this one.At first glance it looks like Wales. But to be honest, it looks more like a family's coat of arms than an actual flag. Is it a flag? Country, region, what type?

No the Welsh flag is green and WHite with a Gryfon (sic). I think it is either a family crest or a sheild/crest for an English county, not sure which.
Major hint. What county included Hartlepool when I was born? Also the Bishop of this place used to be a "Prince Bishop" and assisted the Archbishop of Cantebury during the Coronation of QEII.
Google away. :gulppint: :gulppint: :gulppint: :gulppint: :gulppint: :gulppint:
