View Full Version : Whitney, Kariya in "deep" talks with Edmonton
Just flying around the radio waves right now that it's a strong possibility for him to come home for a cheap contract. He wanted to come here, and now with Peca and Pronger he feels this is a team that can compete and is close to home (over the lockout he built a home in Fort Sask).
I like it, and would be fine with that lineup moving forward. While he's not great by any means, he'd help the PP and would be a cheap trigger man.
Edited to add this, it's now been reported that we're also in heavy discussion with Kariya.
Can I call **** or what? :D
This is coming from The Team 1260 and The Bear
The Oilers seem to be the popular team for players to go to this offseason. Whitney wouldn't be a bad addition, not overly big, but still an effective offensive player, and wouldn't be bad on the PP.
EDIT: Kariya wouldn't be a bad addition either.
The thing I would be worried about with all these moves is how long it's going to take for this team to "gel". With the talent they have, they shouldn't have any problem, but you never know...

This would be good for the Oilers
Give them a decent player, who can play on the PP, and with speed
Kariya wouldn't be bad either, especially considering the team canada connections
I agree about the gelling to a point MD, but we've only added 3 players... shouldn't be too hard.
Wouldn't it be weird though if in 3 days Lowe acquired 3 ex-captains all of whom played in a Gold Medal game on a team that he helped build?
ESPN just reported it's all but a done deal to see Kariya here next year. :D :D :D :D

PDO, you're rockin' it!
I'm getting that feeling again.
I'm kind of speechless, but Kariya would be great fit. :)

Two solid additions to the wings. Whitney may be a premiter player and a defensive liability but he's still good enough for top-six duties and can really help the PP. And a very cheap source for 15+ goals, 40+ points if he's indeed willing to take less in Edmonton. Not too shabby. Kariya only sweetens the deal. Fast and skilled he is what Edmonton Oiler hockey is all about. He has some injury problems and is coming off of a poor year so hopefully Edmonton doesn't get caught over paying. Having said that, he's one of the top LW'ers in the game and I feel he will get over his slump and post at least 25g/60p. I'm really excited to see this Edmonton team in action. But if they land these two I can't see them making many more moves this off-season. As far as FA's go anyway.
Kariya - Peca - Dvorak
Smyth - Horcoff - Whitney
Torres - Reasoner - Hemsky
Moreau - Stoll - Laraque
Pronger - Semenov
Staios - Smith
Bergeron - Cross
Conklin

Not a huge follower of the Oil so forgive me if I put together some crazy lines. But the personal is there to make one solid team! :D

You were bang on on every line except I'd switch Whitney and Hemsky and Smyth and Kariya.. nice job :thumb:

I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in Edmonton
BUT..he has also been rumoured to go to Montreal. HEAVY rumours, like he was supposed to sign this morning/afternoon
He'd be a better fit in edmonton.

Fair enough. My reasoning for Smyth and Kariya was to split up the speed/grit a bit. Your #1 line is really gritty but not as fast as the others (not that it's slow....) and line two can be pushed around a bit. I figured if you have two legit #1 LW'ers, a thin position throughout the league, you may aswell place them so that you balance out the intangibles.
But you know your Oilers better than I do. I just can't wait for hockey season to start. :)

I heard those too.
Oilers in running for Kariya
Jim Matheson
The Edmonton Journal
The Oilers have had preliminary discussions on acquiring free-agent winger Paul Kariya.
It would be a stretch to fit the 30-year-old left-winger into their player budget after adding Chris Pronger's $6.25-million US salary and Michael Peca's $3.99-million US tab this week, but Oilers GM Kevin Lowe has talked to Kariya's agent Don Baizley.
If he were to get Kariya, Lowe conceiveably would have to trade another winger, because the team is already at $22 million US and has to sign a half-dozen restricted free-agents.
Lowe is also close to signing backup goalie Jussi Markkanen for about $850,000 US and will be announcing the signing of unrestricted free-agent defenceman Igor Ulanov.
If Kariya -- who is also talking to San Jose and Los Angeles -- were to sign with the Oilers it would likely be a one-year deal in the $2.5 million US to $3 million US range. Lowe is also considering unrestricted free-agent Mark Messier, but only if he has some money left.

No thanks on Messier, but Kariya would be a great addition, and Ulanov (assuming it's the minimum contract) would be a great addition to add some more depth.
