They have been referring to the ECHL's Leafs team as the Baby, Baby Leafs.

Last year, the 03/04 season, the Leafs were not affiliated with any ECHL team. I looked at all the active teams. At the beginning of the 2004/2005 Season, I checked the teams again. I found the Leafs and the St. John's Leafs were now affiliated with the Pensacola Ice Pilots. I then looked at the Gulls schedule to see if the Ice Pilots would play in San Diego. They were. I purchased a ticket for that game right away. As with all other Leafs teams, I support the home team UNLESS they played the Leafs (in the AHL when the Bulldogs were the Baby Oilers, I called them my home team. not now though because they are the Baby Habs). So, when the Ice Pilots played in San Diego, I was rooting for them. Every time the Ice Pilots scored, I stood up and cheered. Gulls fans were (nicely) heckling me about it. I assured them I would root for the Gulls in all other home games. That I always rooted for Leafs teams no matter what level they were because I'm loyal to the Sweater.

There was a young woman sitting in the seat to the right of me. She was there with her fiance. She had moved to Pensacola from Virginia the previous year to be with her fiance while he was in college. That's when she discovered the Ice Pilots and became a fan. They came to San Diego from Pensacola for the game. It thrilled her that she could stand and cheer for them with another fan. Even here in San Diego, lots of fans wear their NHL Sweaters to the Gulls games. Some of them never wear a Gulls Sweater. Some of them are like me and wear a Gulls Sweater sometimes and our NHL Sweater most of the time. I was wearing my Leafs Sweater and I had a sign I held up that said "Go Ice Pilots Go!" I had a Leafs Logo AND an Ice Pilots Logo on it. In the PreGame warmup I was at their end of the ice and I held that sign up to the glass so they could see it. They looked at it and smiled. :)

I know a Leafs fan online who lives near Atlanta. He has always lived in the States, but when he was a kid, during winter vacations he visited his uncle in Ontario. That's how he became a Leafs fan. He knew the original owner of the Ice Pilots but he said they stunk. He said the owner sold them and that's when the Ice Pilots got good. I think he said they moved too.

The Ice Pilots ended the Season clinching not only their Division Title, but also their Conference Title. They are in the American Conference, Southern Division. Way to go, Baby Leafs!! (St. John's is in the Playoffs too.)

They also won the Brabham Cup, which is equivalent to the NHL's President's Trophy, with 107 Points. (The Gulls won it last year with 108 points.) Back on April 8th, the ECHL announced the Ice Pilots had won the Brabham Cup with 101 points, but the season wasn't over yet, so that's how they ended up with 107. I'll post the article about it. http://www.echl.com/upload_images/BrabhamCup.jpg

This is the article on the Ice Pilots winning the Brabham Cup with the intro I made to it on my forum:

Last season, the Gulls won the Brabham Cup with 108 points to be swept in the Playoffs by the Alaska Aces in 3 games. This year, the Pensacola Ice Pilots won the Brabham Cup (equivalent to the NHL President's Trophy) with 101 points. I hope they do better in the playoffs than the Gulls did last year.

Some of the St. John's Leafs were sent down to the Ice Pilots this season, and St. John's called up some of the Ice Pilots from time to time.

Pensacola Ice Pilots Win Brabham Cup With 101 Points

April 3, 2005

PRINCETON, N.J. ? Beating Mississippi 7-4 in front of 5,159 fans at the Pensacola Civic Center on Saturday, Pensacola won the Brabham Cup, the trophy awarded annually to the regular season point champion in the http://www.echl.com/upload_images/BrabhamCup.jpg ECHL. The Ice Pilots are 48-16-5 and have 101 points while Alaska is second in the league and atop the National Conference at 43-18-8 and 94 points. The Ice Pilots will officially receive the Brabham Cup trophy at their final regular season home game on Saturday, April 9.

Pensacola clinches home ice for the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs which open on April 12 with the Division Semifinals in the National Conference and the Conference Quarterfinals in the American Conference. The Ice Pilots have qualified for the postseason each of the last four seasons and six of the eight years since the team moved to Pensacola prior to 1996-97. Pensacola advanced to the Kelly Cup Finals in 1998, losing in six games to Hampton Roads.

Pensacola becomes the 15th team in ECHL history to reach 100 points and with two victories in its last three games would become the sixth team in 17 seasons to win 50 games. The Ice Pilots play at Texas on Sunday and at Mississippi on Friday before closing out the regular season at home against Mississippi. The Ice Pilots have set team records for points (101), forty-eight wins (the system turned the eight into a smilie). Home wins (25), Road wins (23), Consecutive wins (12), Consecutive home wins (9), While tying the team record for consecutive road wins (6).

Alaska needs to win its final three games to reach the century mark for points (the Aces ended the season with 98 points). The Aces play at Las Vegas on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. The Aces have set team records for points (94), wins (43), road wins (21), consecutive wins (6) and consecutive road wins (5) while tying their marks for home wins (22) and consecutive home wins (4). In its first ECHL season in 2003-04, Alaska swept San Diego in the Pacific Division Semifinals. It was the eighth-largest postseason upset in league history (26 points) as the Aces finished fourth in the division with 82 points while San Diego had won the Brabham Cup with 108 points.

The Brabham Cup is named in recognition of Henry Brabham, who was a founding member of the ECHL and the first owner of the Erie Panthers. A former mayor and businessman who was a major force in professional hockey in Virginia for more than 15 years, Brabham worked tirelessly to establish the ECHL during its early years.

April 7, 2005

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Brabham Cup trophy will be presented to the Pensacola Ice Pilots during an on-ice ceremony prior to the final regular season home game on Saturday against Mississippi. The ceremony will feature Chad Quenneville and Shane Calder, who were inducted as charter members of the Ice Pilots Hall of Fame on February 26. Quenneville was team captain and appeared in every regular season and postseason games for the Ice Pilots during their first three seasons while Calder played the first four seasons for Pensacola.

Presented to the regular season point champion in the ECHL each season, the Brabham Cup will be displayed throughout the game and fans will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken with the trophy. Pensacola is 49-16-5 with 103 points and has clinched the ECHL regular season point title and secured home ice throughout the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Becoming the 15th team in league history to reach 100 points, Pensacola needs a win in its last two games to become the sixth team in 17 years to win 50 games. The Ice Pilots have set team records for points (103), wins (49), home wins (25), road wins (24), consecutive wins (12) and consecutive home wins (9) while tying the team record for consecutive road wins (6).

The Ice Pilots will be selling 1,000 commemorative T-shirts featuring the Brabham Cup on the front and the names of the players on the championship team on the back that will only be available during Saturday's game. Following the game, fans will be able to meet the players during an autograph session and also will have the opportunity to purchase home and away game-worn jerseys during an auction.

The American Conference began their Quarter Finals on April 13th. They play for the Kelly Cup in the ECHL. http://www.echl.com/upload_images/2005KellyCupPlayoffs.jpg

This is the Ice Pilots' Schedule. Their 1st game was last night and they lost to the 8th Seed. Game 2 starts in about 30 minutes from now. I would hate to see the Ice Pilots repeat what the Gulls did last season - losing in 3 games to the 8th Seed.

The Ice Pilots are down 2 games to 1. They play again tonight. If they don't win tonight's game, then they will go the way of the Gulls last season - the best team in the ECHL eliminated in Round 1. Since they are the Baby, Baby Leafs, I'm pulling for them to win tonight. They have to win 2 games straight not to be eliminated. This Round is the best of 5.

EDIT: I got mixed up on the dates. http://freeconservatives.com/smilies/rolling_eyes.gif The Ice Pilots didn't play last night. They play Greenville tonight at 7:05pm EDT.

Pensacola Ice Pilots won their division and their conference. After winning the Brabham Cup, they went the same way as the Gulls did last season. They lost in Round 1 in 4 games (vs SD being swept in 3 games last year after winning the Brabham Cup). :( I guess it doesn't pay to win the Brabham Cup. Better to come in lower in the Standings (no lower than 4th, though, in order to make the Playoffs) and continue on to the next round than to win the Brabham Cup and go out in Round 1.
