The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenceman Patrice Brisebois and centre Pierre Turgeon.

Brisebois, whose option was not picked up by the Montreal Canadiens, signed a 2 year deal with the Avalanche worth $4.5 million. He will earn $1.5 million this season and $3 million in 2005/06.

The 34-year-old, who has played his entire NHL career with the Canadiens, has tallied 79 goals and 263 assists in 791 NHL games.

He scored four goals and dished out 27 assists in 71 games with Montreal in 2003-04.

''Patrice Brisebois possesses the rare combination of size and skill and he represents a great addition for our organization heading into the new NHL,'' said Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix.

Turgeon also signed a two-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 35-year-old is a 17-year NHL veteran having played for Buffalo, NY Islanders, Montreal, St. Louis and most recently, the Dallas Stars. A veteran of 1,215 NHL games, Turgeon is five goals away from his 500th career goal.

''We're pleased to be able to add a player of Turgeon's caliber to our lineup,'' said Lacroix. ''We expect the new rules and new dynamics of today's NHL will allow a player of his skill to be a strong addition to our team.''

''I had the opportunity to coach him in St. Louis for several years,'' said Avalanche Head Coach Joel Quenneville. ''He's a great playmaker and will help us in all phases of our game.''

Well, that just leaves:

Toronto, Phoenix, San Jose and New Jersey as the only teams to not join in on the frenzy.

And I have to say very questionible moves by Lacroix

Sure, Vancouver didn't improve..by adding new talent

But we did re-sign a HUGE player ;)

Plus, Vancouver improved by letting go of dead weight in sopel

Calgary -> Stagnant

How can you say Calgary has been stagnant with the signing of Amonte and McCarthy and the re-signing of Iginla while Edmonton is MUCH BETTER with Pronger and Peca minus Brewer, Isbister and York

McCarty and Gelinas.. Gelinas is/was better. Amonte? Don't make me laugh, he's well past his prime!

Ibsitser was a fourth liner.. hardly a loss.

Pronger >>>>>>>>>> Brewer

Peca is a much harder player to play against than York. He may be a slight downgrade offensively (which is very easy to argue as a wash), but he's got more leadership, better at faceoffs, more physical, and he's performed in the playoffs (yes Bob, when he was out against Sundin throughout his entire career while Yashin got all the PP minutes he didn't put up impressive numbers).

This Oiler team is *much* improved, and there's still rumours swirling of one more addition to the team (Handzus..?).

Well you can't say with the addition of Amonte, McCarthy and Gelinas they are stagnant.

For Edmonton, yes they've improved but to the sam eextent as the Flames. They've lost Brewer, Isbister and York which were solid players don't forget that.

They lost Gelinas.. Gelinas and McCarthy are a wash at absolute best for the Flames.

Isbister is a fourth liner and not a solid player.

Pronger is a huge upgrade over Brewer.. puts up over twice as many points, is a proven leader and a proven winner. Will eat his minutes and more, I fail to see how that's the same as Amonte?

I'll openly agree Peca isn't a huge upgrade over York, but he's still an upgrade.

Ask any team in the league..

Brewer and York or Pronger and Peca?

Easy decision for me.

edit:

Don't forget, 3 of the mentioned players here played for Canada in '02. K-Lowe had access to everyone of their scouting reports at that time, and there's a reason he chose Pronger and Peca. There's no denying York is a good player, but he's not as good as Peca. If Peca's salary came in about $1,000,000 lower this would be an amazing trade. Obviously it doesn't, but Peca will have his chance to prove what he can do in an Oiler uniform.

Todd Marchant put up 60 points playing between Hemsky and Smyth, that's something York couldn't do, and I'd be amazed if the same can be said for Peca. He'll pot atleast 60 this season.

edit2:

And I didn't even mention Salo last year!

You put in a healthy Conklin and Jussi for teh entire season last year and we make the playoffs, so that's another improvement.

Last year we were one of the best 5x5 teams in the league... IIRC 9th in goal differential. Our PP was brutal, and our goaltending for most of the season was even worse. Pronger drastically improves the PP, makes us an even better 5x5 team, and improves the PK the as well. Peca improves the PK and makes us a better 5x5 team. Both players make us bigger and grittier (something that Calgary feasted upon last year was our size.. I'd love to see them try that again this year!).
