The Edmonton Oilers have obtained centre Mike Peca from the New York Islanders in exchange for Mike York and a conditional draft pick.
Peca, a two-time winner of the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL?s best defensive forward (1997, 2002), scored 11-29-40 with 71 PIM in 76 games for the Islanders in 2003-04. The 40-point season placed him sixth in scoring on the New York roster and it marked the seventh time since 1996-97 that the Islanders captain had scored 40-or-more points. During the eight-season span between 1996-97 and 2003-04, Peca scored 40-or-more points seven times, including career-highs for goals, assists and points when he tallied 25-35-60 in 80 games in 1999-2000.
?It?s a great opportunity for the Oilers to obtain a player of Mike?s caliber,? stated Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe. ?He is an outstanding two-way player who has been recognized as one of the top defensive players in the game. Along with his strong work ethic, he also brings outstanding leadership skills to the team.?
In 622 career games during his NHL career with Vancouver, Buffalo and the Islanders, the 5?11?, 190-pound native of Toronto, Ontario has scored 151-220-371 with 560 penalty minutes. In 69 playoff games Peca has added 9-14-23 with 58 penalty minutes. The 31-year-old forward played in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final with Buffalo and scored one goal in six games as the Sabres lost to the Dallas Stars in six games.
An assistant captain of Canada?s gold medal winning team at the 2002 Winter Olympics, Peca has also represented Canada at the 2001 World Championships and at the 1994 World Junior Championships.
Things are starting to shape up.
As a side-note....I got my season tickets today.
